They used to do that all the time on Sandpatch in the Chessie days

I rode two U36Cs on the D&H pushing up Belden hill and that's the way they did it back in the early 1980s. All they had on the train back then was a flasher that didn't have to be hooked up to air except to do a break test and then it was disconnected. So when they got to the tunnel they cut off and waited for orders.

On the old SP the rules were strict about uncoupling on the fly. The airline had to cut in throughout the train. The reason why if the train went into emergency braking the helper was in full throttle would cause a collision with the train and detailing equipment. I knew a crew that did this move right in front of a trainmaster and were dismissed from service. Additional story in the 1970s a WP crew coupled a helper to a train headed to Oakland CA. Never cut in the airline. The headed went into emergency and the helper was still shoving. Caused a massive derailment.

Dismissed? Or pulled from service?

Some locos now have remote control of the air and coupler when dedicated to helper service.

@gravelydon7072 I had forgotten about those units equipped that way. As I remember these were installed on SD 40s.

@@jamesg2609 5719 is a GE AC44CW which is equipped with it on the front end. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJuko2B6jbl4frc It is called Helperlink. It does not require the air to be connected so all it has to do is pull the pin.
@MatthewMello4 күн бұрын
Device called Helperlink allows for this.

When I worked for the D&RGW we cut off on the fly all the time. But we still had cabooses. A time before rear end devices.

Did the conductor go out or do they have a decoupler built into that unit
@gravelydon707216 күн бұрын
Crew member on that unit as it doesn't have the remote controls equipment. Those are normally fairly large size equipment mounted to the handrails on the ends.

We actually do this in Virginia at many shunting yards, no these are not hump yards too , in fact they are intentionally brought out and pushed up to speed before decoupling

I was thrilled, but didn't know it, until you mentioned it. 😢

i always wondered how they uncoupled the helpers on the fly considering that normally knuckle couplers are manually opened for decoupling, do these units have some kind of automated mechanism?
