Thanks for the video! It helped me find the solution, just something to notice, If you only want to change the first thumbnail, you don't have to delete all your media, you can just have all your media in sub-folders, and then add the thumbnail to the root of your project, then update thumbnails, and then the first thumbnail will be that picture. I tried to place there 5 images, but it only updates the first one, which is OK, as the only thing I want is to have the main thumbnail to make it easier to identify. hey mate i just moved everything from Master folder to a new bin and imported the thumbnail into the Master folder. when i try to update the thumbnails, it shows 5 images including the new thumbnail. so it seems Resolve will import 5 thumbnail images from the footage unless we delete the media from the project temporarily.

This is the correct procedure! Takes 2 seconds!

Thank you. It is true that you must import the thumbnail into your project first as stated. I find an easier way to change the thumbnail is to: 1) create a new project with the appropriate thumbnail in the time line, 2) go to the old file and select and copy everything in the time line EXCEPT THE FIRST imported file, 3) reopen the new project position your cursor and then, 4) past everything into the new file. You can now rename the new project and delete the old one when ready. This avoids losing linked project files and having to relink them.

Thanks for this. I don't think I will use it because my video files are in various subfolders in a project folder and I create thumbnails always after I've finished my video. Would be nice if you can just select a thumbnail instead of having an option to only update the thumbnail based on your footage.

No worries mate. Yes that would be perfect. I hope at some stage they'll add the option to choose any images for thumbnail directly from the project manager.

Agree. Most of us design the thumbnail towards the end of the workflow anyway. Hope they'll come up with a simpler solution soon.

I agree. It should be a much simpler process like right click > update thumbnail. I wish I could work with their product development team to shift their focus from building new super awesome complex tools to simplifying existing tools.

Do you know a way of applying a thumbnail to movies that are rendered out from Davinci?

Good question but sorry I don't know the answer yet (assuming you're referring to the thumbnail of the actual file rendered from Resolve and not websites like KZbin, Vimeo etc).

What if you're someone like me who creates a project before having any footage and imported random things (such as test footage to e.g. find a color grade style/look) during pre-production? Before watching this video, I did try the "remove all media and import it again", but I still see a thumbnail from footage that isn't even in the mediapool.

This is a pretty terrible tip, considering the massive risk of your conform going out the window, especially if you had needed to manually conform any part of your timeline. This is a bug that bmd needs to fix, plain and simple.

Have you imported any footage into the project yet? If not, you can do it from the Media tab.

Ok sounds like you probably didn't create any folders/ bins in the project and that's why we can't see 'em. No worries we just need to delete the footage from the media pool (not timeline) and then bring the thumbnail in followed by the footage we just deleted. Before doing anything though I'd highly recommend taking a backup copy of the project just in case. Click on the project from the project manager and simply copy and paste to create a backup copy.
