First Reformed would be an excellent video imo that's THE movie I think of when I think of the digital film look. They nailed that movie.

Hey, love the channel I'm learning alot about grading. Just thought that this might be interesting for you to know but for 'The Lighthouse' they actually used Orthochromatic images as reference. Orthochromatic film doesn't register red light, which is what gives the skin tone and candle light that (no over exposed) white glow and punch and makes the imperfections in the skin register much darker. However, Kodak don't make Orthochromatic 35mm film stock so instead they used cyan filters to achieve the Orthochromatic look. Just wondering if you think the grade would work better if you start by manipulating the cyans first. just from a technical nerd point of view lol.

Absolutely. I had someone else point that out to me too and you're totally right. To get a more accurate representation of the film stock, dropping the red channel would be a great start. However for this particular clip with the lights/lens/camera set up that was used, bumping the red channel got me closer to the look. It's totally a debate worth having and I appreciate you bringing it up. I think if I were to redo it, I'd probably go for what you suggested. Too focused on matching shots and not replicating the look, it's a fine line haha. Thanks for the insight.

I mess around with the red and orange sliders quite often in Photoshop when my skin tones are too dark. Also, not to be too nit picky, vintage lenses don't add grit. They offer lower contrast, no or few coatings so they tend to flare at light sources and lose sharpness away from the center. Grain adds grit. Like your channel!

That's great. Good luck with it. I'll also say that I cover black and white in more detail and give some more info in this video if that helps too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nISnZp2kab50Z6M

I loved the Light House hahah HAAAAAARRRRRRK! Robert Eggars has a Nosferatu film in the works with that actress from the VVitch. Love A24 and its great to see there are other super fans out there! That film grain tho, and don't forget the frame as well, that's what gave a more of invasive feeling throughout the film. Loved the tips man your channel is a gem ;) an uncut gem even! haha Definitely a new fan!

Dude these videos are great, but that back ground music is wayyy to distracting. Dial it down a few Db so the audience can follow along, I found myself not being able to listen to you speak a bunch of times. Just a tip :)

You're absolutely right. I haven't posted anything in a few years now, but those first few tutorials were pretty bad with regards the the BG music.
