What does it mean to no longer be safe in your own country? In the documentary 'Guardians of Truth', exiled Turkish journalist Can Dündar meets a woman who has locked horns with Mexico’s most powerful entities: the government, and the drug cartels.
In Erdoğan’s Turkey, Can Dündar is public enemy number one. After he uncovered illegal Turkish arms shipments to Syria in 2015, the President said he was a terrorist, and personally called for a life sentence in prison for the journalist. Can Dündar fled to Germany following an attempt on his life during his trial. Since then, he has continued to defend his homeland against the autocrat’s lies, promoting freedom of speech from exile.
Dündar meets the journalist Anabel Hernández, who’s been investigating drug-related crime and corruption in Mexico for more than 20 years, publishing numerous books and articles on the subject. She is best-known for highlighting close links between the government and the drug clans -- ground-breaking research that almost cost her her life. Luckily, she wasn’t at home on the day 11 armed men showed up to shoot her dead. She knew then that she would have to leave her home country.
Not that she doesn’t return from time to time, under tight security, to continue her work and see her family. Can Dündar meets her in exile and then again, during one of these highly dangerous trips back home. He poses the pivotal question: what’s driving her to take this huge risk again and again?

No one can understand a mothers pain or sacrifice like another mother. We carry the child for 9 months & feel each others heart beats even before we see each other face to face. I respect mothers who risk it all for the sake of their children. That is an actual hero, ones that storybooks should be written about.. Batman...Spiderman... these fictional characters could never compete with the real live ones.

I lived in Southern Mexico for almost a year in 1982 when I was nineteen years old. I went down there with a couple of older friends of mine who were a couple who knew a Mexican national who invited them down there to build themselves a small casa on this friend's property on the Pacific coast, about 250 miles south of Mazatlan. While we were living and working down there, building this small, one-room dwelling, the very first night that we had arrived, a neighbor of our friend with the property was celebrating a wedding. The young man who had just gotten married that very same day was a local police officer. They were having a wedding reception at his wife's family's home. Everyone was drinking, the music was loud, there was laughter and the smell of delicious food wafting through the air ... then, apparently, as part of their celebration, fellow police officers of this newly married colleague started firing their pistols into the air. My friends and I immediately ran into our Mexican friend's house, because he had a two-story structure, so we felt that we would be a bit more safe when the bullets started coming back down again. Then, a minute later, the screaming started. Wailing, and screaming, and crying. Soon, we found out that the newly married groom had been hit in the top of his head with a bullet which killed him instantly. Yes, THIS is Mexico. I know that around the world, less educated people, often people who have no common sense, fire their weapons into the air with no concern for theirs, or anyone else's life. I have friends who are from Mexico who KNOW that this is an idiotic thing to do and they too have run for their lives into buildings to get away from fellow Mexicans who ignorantly fire their weapons into the air, usually in celebration of something or another. Fireworks went off all the time when I was living in Mexico. Fine, no problem, but shooting bullets into the air? Really? Also, while living in Mexico, I discovered that the police, the military, and government officials, in general, are pretty much as corrupt as can be. Bribery is massively common there. It's expected, or, you won't get very far both as a Mexican national or as a foreign visitor, or as an ex-pat living there. I have avoided visiting Mexico (one of my favorite countries I've ever had the pleasure to visit and to live in) ever since I lived there. 1982 was the last time I ever visited Mexico. There's just no good reason whatsoever to go there, even though, I absolutely LOVE the people and culture of Mexico.
