Join us as we take a day trip to Ennis Texas! Everyone goes to Ennis to see the spectacular show of the bluebonnets, but there is so much more to explore. In 1871, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad purchased 647 acres of land in Ellis County for $5 per acre. The City of Ennis was established in 1872 and named after Cornelius Ennis, an early official of the railroad.
Take about an hour to visit the Railroad Museum, where adults can enter for a fee of $3 and children under 12 can enter for free. The railroad played a key role in the development of Ennis as an agricultural, commercial, and industrial center, earning it a wild west reputation with 13 saloons and 6 beer halls. Outlaw gangs like Cole Younger and Sam Bass once roamed the area, with the Texas Rangers eventually catching up to them.
Ennis Veterans Memorial Park is a 19-acre park dedicated to all war veterans, open to the public since 2011. Monuments like the Doughboys pay tribute to the soldiers of World War I. Let's honor their bravery, dedication, and service that have given us the freedoms we enjoy today.
