Uncovering Musa Basjoo in Spring - Tropical-Style Garden UK (Zone 9)

It's early March and time to release the Musa Basjoo from its winter protection. There is no special date to do this - it's just a matter of keeping an eye on the weather forecast in your area and making the call depending on when frosts are due. This is going to vary from region to region. It's always worth having a fleece bag nearby for emergency protection, should frost return.

Lol, it was an impromptu idea but I'm glad I did it. Threw everything but the kitchen sink at them this year! Glad yours have come through too x

I unwrapped mine last weekend and chucked the straw in the greens bin. Can't wait for leaves again now!

Yay! Me too! The green bin…. Of course! Got mine sitting on the compost heap for now. Hope those leaves start bursting out asap. Lots of rain at the moment.

I love watching you in your garden. I only started with tropical plants last year, so i am still a novice. Looking at what you did with your bananas i wish i had done the same. Unforunatley i cut mine down to the bottome. You live and learn. I wish i had someone near me who has a tropical garden just to see what they do. Keep the videos coming.

Your brave lol. Got all mine packed with loft insulation between the stems then wrapped in fleece. Can see growth pushing up but it always seems to snow in April so I’ll be holding back a few weeks yet

Totally understand the caution, you're absolutely right to hold back! But the number of mild days we're having, combined with a favourable forecast, gave me a fire in my belly ☺ I'll have the fleece on hand

@@tropiclaud Tempted to uncover the basjoos myself, but ive got Lasicarpas wrapped in with couple of the clumps and they’re temperamental at best lol. Thought they all survived lastyear but the constant rain in May soon turned 2 of them into pure mush.

I protect small ones but once they reach 6/7 foot I let them fend for themselves I am not unwrapping just yet though!

Hi there! Your caution is sensible, I just couldn’t contain my excitement any further 😂 I did wonder what I will do to protect them at a taller height. I may need to accept defeat at that point 😊
