They were fabulous when they finished.. As you said you are living in the renovation. Kyle and Guy built the Yurk so they can excape.. So it is very hard for you both, you are both doing a fantastic job, remember that. If you could afford to get the roof done, that such a very dangerous job. I got the walls insulated on the my 3 bedroom semi-detached house and it took the guy's hours to put up and take down the scaffolding 🙈🙈

The front door could do with a little extra to stop the river underneath in heavy rain, but that is about it now. The kitchen is so dry now it is incredible. We now have gas heaters and dehumidifiers running each day in the living room and hall and that is drying out each day, and Lukas' bedroom is drying out nicely thanks to the fire. It is getting slightly warmer in each room the more they dry out. Thank you again for watching and commenting :-) (4)

You're doing well. Multifuel stove in living room and new flue liner and sorted. Go 904 grade stainless as lasts longer if burning solid fuel. If not DIY installing the liner then pays to have installer fit the better quality 904 grade. Ridge tiles, could do with some reclaimed slates to repair cracked slates/ missing. Cut with stone disk in angle grinder or buy a genuine slate cutter. Need a hip iron for the bottom and use neat PVA adhesive on the slates and if summer moisten the backs of the ridge tiles and mix 3 of sharp sand 1 cement and plasticiser add mix to bed them onto mortar. Use rubber mallet to bed them in and spirit level to keep them even/ running true or string line. Not a bad job to do.
@thecornerhouseproject10 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for all the info James. We will be going with the 904 due to us wanting to use both wood and coal. Look out for another video already uploaded for an update on the ridge tiles. Thank you for watching, commenting and being so helpful with your info.

I watch Make Do Grow as well - they are a great couple, Kylie and Guy. Do your place at your own pace. If it were me, I would get the roof sorted as a priority as the rest of the house benefits immediately from that. Electricity and running water sets you up for everything else but as long as you are dried in without leaks, you can survive the winter. Good luck with your renovations. You can be proud of your progress so far so do take a break over Christmas.

Not at all. Anyone who thinks you should’ve done more in 5 months doesn’t have experience doing extensive remodeling/rebuilding old structures. The one thing you’re guaranteed is that you will find many surprises and your schedule will have to deal with multiple curve balls. You both have done so much. I’m absolutely impressed. I would have addressed the roof on day one for fear that my work securing everything below might be compromised. Buy you both have made great decisions. Your instincts & research has done you well. Hold your heads high. Good to have the scaffolding for future work like the gutters. It’s not just the drone that goes blowing up on the ridge. Something’s are best delegated to experts. Not only can you hurt yourself, you can easily breathe more slate I’m interested to see if you’ll be buying your son a bed 😃. Take care. You’re awesome ✌️💚♥️🎄
@thecornerhouseproject10 ай бұрын
You’re right and our first curveball was having to replace the kitchen ceiling/bedroom floor as well as the living room side. We knew we would have to replace the living room side but didn’t know just how bad the kitchen was. Oh that and the vast amount of woodworm that was in the house, that was a huge problem and possibly still will be. We just have to hope that we’ve dried the house enough to have stopped it…but we shall see next year I suppose. 🫣😬 We’ve had the roof patched now in 3 places and so far so good. I’m sure in time it’s probably going to need either replacing or at the very least all the slates off to see what timber needs replacing and then slates back on that are good and new ones where needed. The scaffolding we’re really pleased with as it makes the guttering so much easier to deal with as the fascia needs replacing too. Definitely with the roof, I don’t think either of us are brave enough at the moment to be climbing that roof! 😂 Yep, managed to get him a bed from Facebook marketplace! Who knew pine double beds got sold so quickly! Every one I messaged had already gone, but I did eventually get one! 😮💨 ❤️

I think for a proper fix you'd need to get the plaster on the inside of the flue, the most basic form of a liner. I've seen professionals do it on smaller flues (about 150x150 mm) by lowering a rope through the flue, tying an old foam mattress to the rope and pulling that up while pouring plaster slurry down the flue from the roof. Probably won't work too well with a large flue for an open fireplace though.

Beautiful drone footage. Glad you got that roof sorted, it’s the big things that affect the whole house that contributes to the chaos. It’s getting close to the stage where you can work on one room at a time, & close off others for storage. That way can complete a room (or almost complete it) then move to the next. Takes a bit of strategising, but it’s a thought. And a whiteboard might help too! I watch Make do Grow as well, if there’s ever a world wide lime shortage, we know why! Cheers to you - doing a great job! 😊
@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
Aww thank you! I love that idea of a whiteboard, not sure Ben would go for that lol but I love a bit of written down organisation I think it’s the key to keeping your brain uncluttered! Also you’re thinking along the same lines as us with having the one room for storage whilst a room at a time gets sorted. I think the living room will become the storage and working room over winter as the kitchen is the one we gravitate towards being in the most, so once we get some normality in our ‘bedroom’ upstairs I think the kitchen will be tackled first… ooh after we’ve got the shower indoors in the bathroom! 🤣 Haha you’re absolutely right with make do grow with the lime shortage! Do love watching how methodical and organised they are though! That’s what I aspire to! Thank you and cheers to you for commenting too! 😘

I think you have made tremendous progress especially considering the condition of the house and outbuildings when you arrived. I share your discomfort with working on the roof of a two story house, particularly considering the ceiling height and pitch of the roof so I'm glad to hear that you have someone coming to make the repairs. Having a caravan on-site to live in and an off-site storage unit for your belongings would have been ideal. (Hindsight always has perfect vision.) When the roof is completey water tight and your electricity is connected you will really be able to move forward. Always remember that you have a couple of thousand on-line friends cheering you on.

Aww we loved the “couple of thousand on-line friends cheering you on” it made us very happy to think of it like that! So thank you for saying that! 😘 Yeah a caravan and storage we did think about but wanted to use whatever money we have on the house, but definitely in hindsight it would have made ours lives a bit easier just not having to shift things around and tidy up everyday. Living in it does also make you hesitant to kick up loads of dust too so jobs get put off! Haha. I’m sure next year we will be much better organised and have more of a system going though. Oh yes we’re very glad to get a message from Sean saying he would come and do the roof! It wasn’t something we were looking forward to…it’s quite a long way up! I would have liked a go at doing the tiles if the house was 10ft lower! Haha

The scaffold will be a good idea considering that your house is a two story, but it will also be a game changer for when you start working on the outbuildings. Working with stone on a trestle or ladder won't be easy and I think you'll realize just how much you needed it when that happens.👍
@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
We are really pleased with the scaffold and have seen how to put it up and use it, so to speak. It can be three short towers, or 2/1 or just one 3 high, so we should have it covered no matter the job. The trestles are really good and fast to use but not for the higher stuff. Being the non aluminium type though, we will both look like body builders soon hahaha. A perfect 5 out of 5 for your comments. Thank you as always. :-)

You might reconsider putting up temporary plywood ceilings... it will be not much easier than putting up permanent ones... I reckon insulate then line tne ceilings, they won't perform correctly until the roof is fully replaced with a moisture barrier and all that but you could probably wing it a bit. You would need good advice on what sort of insulation could withstand a bit of damp for a year or two before the roof gets done, maybe wool but I have no expertise on that matter. Keep up the great work, you are inspiring us all.

Good decision to buy scaffold, as you said you will need it for many more projects. I loved the smirk when " delivered" was mentioned . Yeah some companies do take the perverbial when it comes to delivery times. 🙄. Those hip beams will unfortunately need replacing too by the looks of it . Once you get, the roof and guttering sorted those walls will begin to dry out properly. You will get there with time and finances off course. Hope your plaster is lime based , be a lot easier for you. They hopefully just put the wrong paint on over it. Your both doing an amazing job there . Hope, you get the place winterized . I really don't know how you are doing it. I admire your work and determination to get things done.
@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
Yeah I think it was definitely worth it buying it. It means it’s here to hand when we do need it and we go at our pace too rather than trying to rush a job for the hire period ending. Hmm, yes with the delivery, but the main thing is….it did arrive 😂 Yeah the hip beams aren’t in the best of health, so that’s another job for some nicer weather. Guttering we will try and get sorted sooner rather than later too as it’s not only is it not helping the walls but we’re not collecting as much rain water as we probably could. Fingers crossed with the lime, the base layers are lime, it’s just that top coat in the living room side of the house, although I did watch a video the other day of a smallish slab of dried quick lime putty and it does actually look and sound very similar to what is on the walls here, so fingers crossed it is like you say and just the wrong paint was put over it. It fizzes when it goes in vinegar, so fingers crossed!🤞 Thank you for your always lovely comments and all of the advice, it’s very much appreciated. We definitely have determination in bucket loads, so hoping that keeps us powering through. 😘

Thank you! It truly is a stunning place we have found ourselves isn’t it?! Oh yes most definitely, makes life a whole lot easier than climbing the ladder to take a look! North-west Tool hire is where we got ours, worth a trip down there. Cheaper than new and also resale value is not far off what you pay too. To have them yourself is so much more cost effective or has been for us and how long it takes us to do a job! 😂 we were lucky with the cement mixer as our neighbour has let us use long term so that’s really handy. I think we’ve had to spend more on tools and equipment than any materials we’ve used, because we needed it all too 😂 we’ve got no money left to do the house but at least we have all the tools! 🤣

Morning...needed to run it by Ben first and then forgot to speak to him about it! Lol...but if you wanted to borrow our acrows or anything that we're currently not using, you are most welcome to borrow them when you need them? We have 7 acrows that we're not using at the moment. One's still propping the shed roof corner! Lol xx

@thecornerhouseproject aww thanks guys that's so kind. We will message you when we need that type of stuff, and if you have them free at that point, great. If not, no worries, we will rent some. 😉

You’re very welcome…realised after I said that we’re using 2 of the acrows at the moment, so 6 not being used lol. Lovely, yeah whenever you need them let me know 😊

It's Mr Doom and Gloom again. Totally agree on the benefits of having scaffolding and will be very useful to a certain height. Now the important element is the legal aspects of building a scaffolding structure for roof access on a two storey building, and this requires an certified scaffold engineer to sign off, hence why the costs of hire has gone horrific. This is of course in an attempt to stop the amount of scaffolding incidents. In addition, you have the aspect of the front of the house facing a road, all be it is of very low traffic volume, but again the legal eagles have issues with that. Finally you have the issue of the ground conditions of flooding in parts of the external ground and the need to have the placement of solid footings for the scaffolding. So in short you are correct in letting the roofer do the job as it is insurance policy and legal compliance of having in place a safe working space. Is it feasible financially at this time of year to spend circa €300 on 8m 316 grade flue liner with a top hat and get the roofer to throw it down whilst he is up there. You could then fit the internal plate to seal the chimney to the flue. When the roof is being replaced fully in 2024 2025 you could then pour the vermiculite to surround the flue liner that will insulate and secure the flue. On the issue of ridge tiles, as you recognise these will need to be replaced but also appreciate at €7 euro for a 400mm ridge tile the cost is significant, and then there is either the time factor either cement affix or the likes of Marley fixing kits but again you are looking at €80 for each ridge plus tiles. All in all a major investment especially when the roof is due for a major strip and rebuild. Thus you are down to two options, (1) the roofer cements the cracked tiles by carefully removing the broken ridge tile and then reinstall into the cement bed, not a quick job certainly a good two day task. (2) the other temporary solution is to have the roofer to lightly grind the in place ridge tiles to remove any loose dirt and then encapsulate the ridge tiles with a self adhesive fast flash tape, this would overlap the ridge tiles and roof tiles to give a water tight fitting until you get a perm repair in 2024 2025. (3) the final common solution is internally to utilise a self expanding foam kit that would be sprayed around his ridge tile area, this material would then expand and fill the gaps and also provide a form of securing the ridge tiles to the roof tiles on an interim basis. Just my usual thinking aloud to generate options.

Haha we like a bit of Mr Doom and Gloom now and again….keeps us on our toes! Well luckily the builder/roofer came to our aid and he did it in the end, which was a phew moment as I think neither of us were ready to get up on that roof just yet. He replaced all the ridge tiles on that side with some new ones and patched up the missing slates with temporary composite tiles he did a really good job with it all especially as I don’t think he was keen on doing it to begin with but it has stopped all the leaks and that’s good enough for us for the time being. Not sure we can afford to replace a roof just yet, so fingers crossed it holds for a long while yet lol We like you’re thinking aloud as it gives food for thought and of course options too! Sean is coming back in the new year to chuck a flue liner down for a wood burner as to have an open fire you need to have a chimney flue of 9 inches to put a liner in and we only have a 6inch flue unfortunately. So we will look into a wood burner most likely or an insert so that we can maybe keep the original fireplace surround in place.

The roof, surprisingly, is in very good condition apart from some slipped slates. One day maybe it will need overhauling but for now it is good. If the day comes that we need to remove slates we will indeed put a membrane on before the slates go back on.

Another great vid! Great drone and sunset shots. Vid quality really increasing 👌👌 we got old steel scaffolsing but was not thw best tbh. Fairly unsafe. ye gys are welcome to it if you like? If its any good? In the end i tied a rope on my land eover and flung it over the roof to do the roof. Will be in a week or two. Ben i think you talk and explain things fine. The caravan analagy weve kibda thought about a lot. Its nice to leave the site and ckme back to our caravan but now during winter we have all but lost what little hit water we were getting out of our elwctric shower and uts freezing in our outdoor kitchen. I do like guy and kyle also tho, and as a trainer i guess guy does that for a living. And Dawn i empathise completely about doegetting its a home wvery now and then. We moved to our nww home for the life theyll bring us not wholly a building project. I realise that more than ever. Been horridly sick foe the last week, a building site is not a comfortable place to heal.

Thank you! I think we dropped off a bit with the filming because you just get so focused on what you are doing and don’t pay attention too much to the filming but fingers crossed now that the two big jobs are out of the way we will pay more attention to it. 😂 because it is fun to do it too even though at times it’s a bit grrr! Would love to have your views, they’re amazing! That’s reminded me I forgot something on your latest video that I wanted to say. Will hop over shortly! Thank you for offering the scaffold that’s really kind of you, the steel scaffold is what we ended up getting in the end. So thank you for the really kind offer but we’re alright for it now ❤️ Yes, you’re right with the caravan there’s always the grass is greener thoughts isn’t there? And then you realise there’s other factors that might not make the greener side so appealing. Another aspect of being indoors…I wonder if it has made us slow down a bit too because we do have the comfort of being in a house, more urgency when we were in the tent. It’s made us lazy! haha Yes, Guy does have a very good way of explaining everything, I also love how much time and research they do before they get started on something too! Oh no! I hope you feel better really soon, a building site is definitely not the place to make you feel better. That must be awful, nowhere to get cosey and rest and recuperate! Fingers crossed you are better real soon. 😘 Spot on with moving for the life it will bring, same here. The house needing work is just sort of a prequel! 😂 for the main event!

Hello Jane, thank you for commenting. We bought some modular scaffold which we can also use moving forwards for other work on the outside of the house and out buildings.

Please think long and hard before getting up on the roof yourselves. The husband of a family friend slid off a roof and died many years ago. He was just putting an aerial up and lost his footing. I would leave it to someone who's used to working on apex roofs. There is a case to be made if you can organise it so you only work on the slope that leads down to where the scaffolding is, but if you're trying to lay ridge tiles where two slopes meet... that will be very difficult.
@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
Oh no that’s awful! That is a big fear of mine the height of this house for any work needing doing. Luckily the roofer/builder Sean came through in the end and we didn’t need to get up there and to say we were relieved is an understatement!

You know I put in a like at the very beginning because I really enjoy your videos. I'm glad you are deciding to let the roofer to come in and do your roof. It is really a better idea to let professionals handle these more dangerous type of jobs. You have enough to do with everything else and it is better to keep safe so you can continue on. BTW Make Do and Grow is also another of my favourite channels. I have been watching them from the very beginning.
@thecornerhouseproject10 ай бұрын
Aww thank you! We really appreciate hearing that! So, thanks ☺️ Yes, we’re glad that’s how the roof repairs turned out as it wasn’t something we were looking forward to having to do! Make do grow is a very good channel to watch. They are so thorough aren’t they with everything they do! Seem like really lovely people too! I think we’ve been watching from not far off of them beginning too. ☺️
@adammurray74111 ай бұрын
that drone yolk is brilliant for looking at jobs. you need all new ridge tiles there. theres nothing to salvage there in reality. and this is the most dangerous job you will face its a cherry picker job two men. prep is everything here getting all the materials you need and tools. no scrimping on either because when that cherry picker arrives at around 150/200 euro a day hire you want things to go smooth. l would HIGHLY suggest getting a roofer too help with this. also if you do a smoke bomb video of where and how much smoke is coming out its easier for people too advise.extremely light leaks can be sorted by rendering that area. as smoke leaking is a sign off weak interior chimney and lining is not as straight forward as you might think.
@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s the best thing to use for things like this, so much easier to see it all in one go…up close and from a distance too! We were really lucky in the end and Sean the builder bloke who uncapped the chimneys came to do the ridge tiles, which we were really glad about because I’m not sure we would have been able to do it ourselves after seeing the work involved for him to do it for us! We got some scaffold in the end from Northwest tool hire for him to do it and it will also come in really handy for other stuff we have to do around the house and on the outbuildings too. Smoke bomb test will definitely be a good idea and even more so doing it on camera to get some help with it. I did wonder if it meant bigger things rather than needing a little repointing. 😔

@thecornerhouseproject11 ай бұрын
Haha…I’m not liking the idea of splatting like a tomato 🍅 and luckily the roofer/builder got in touch and he did come out and replace the ridge tiles and some of the broken slates and for now it is waterproof which is lovely. You’re right though it will need some timbers replacing as the rain had been getting in for a long while and because of the ceiling panels…it has just sat there soaking into the wood. 🫣
