This is very interesting. I came back to the states from Korea in 1987 with a black belt in TSD and was looking for a school to train at in Las Vegas. The closest thing I found to traditional TSD was the UFAF school ran by Chuck Norris’ student, Bob Borrows. I started training there and in a short time I was teaching some classes. I was told that if I learned the UFAF forms, they would honor my TSD black belt. That same year I went to the UFAF convention. I think it was at the Flamingo hotel. All of the black belts got to meet Chuck Norris and escort him over to his hotel room at Caesars Palace. He was extremely nice and took time to speak to each of us. I was a huge fan of his movies at the time. This all would have been right before his trip to Brazil.

When Bruce Lee trained with grapplers, (Hayward Nishioka, Larry Hartsell, Jesse Glover etc) they couldn’t do anything to him. He essentially played with them. Hayward is on video talking about how frustrating it was. He felt like he was unable to do anything, Hayward being a champion judoka himself. In fact, all the guys Bruce trained with were all highly experienced and well regarded grapplers. I find it quite telling that Bruce who regularly trained with grapplers, who according to casuals “didn’t know grappling” dealt with grapplers.. by NOT grappling them and playing their game, but by using the inherent weakness of their systems against them. And then you have Chuck, who basically didn’t know what to do and was submitted. Bruce’s mobility was a serious problem for people to deal with. It’s seems according to the people who trained with him that he was essentially always out of range, could come into range, hit you, and withdraw at will, whenever he wanted. His timing, striking, ability to close the gap on their instep and hit essentially made it impossible for any of them to do anything about it. He could stop them in their tracks but they lacked the ability to do the same.

It's tragic how shallow and gullible martial artists were and are. If Norris punched Helio with intent in the skull he would have been in the hospital at least, and if the other guy had real balls he would tell Rickson, Why would I do the front kick when you know I would?? And he made you feel like a baby, because you had no intent to damage him, he hypnotized you (being ignorant) into his game, in which you knew nothing. The inactivity rule is there in favor of bjj... -Jujitsu is full of con artist stories like these, with it just stay a great combat sport without those.
@ungido3017 күн бұрын
you are partially right however it works, it showed that BJJ worked at the highest state which was MMA specially through UFC, and others platforms. Yes the sport has evolved to the point that using solely a type of martial arts would not give you success but because is so new it evolves every generation. However you can't deny the impact that BJJ had in the first decade, the first few years in completely dominated to the point that all fighter had to learn at least the basics of it. Wrestling is nowadays the most basic of the sports but the sport has evolved to the point that the most successful fighters must have a well rounded basics in most practices, including BJJ. So, BJJ is not just smoke and mirrors it works, it was tested and it didn't disappoint. It came at a point where we thought striking was the all be all, and that Kung fu, and Karate would actually make you a good fighter. BJJ became the basics of the basics in MMA so you can't say it is simply a con like most stablish martial arts that for decades we thought would actually prove useful in a fight

In 1990 Chuck Norris was already 50 years old. I bet he would have beaten up van Damme easily in a real fight. Been training the basics in JuJitSu for a while now. But I'm a Jeet Kune Do guy and people talk about BJJ is a hybrid system which is true but Jeet Kune Do is also a hybrid fighting system that trains in different ranges from from close, to medium, and long range. A lot of the grappling BJJ guys do is from a clinch but in Jeet Kune Do, we do grappling from trapping before we go into it. One of the key things that Jeet Kune Do has over the majority of fighting systems is footwork. The footwork is the most important thing because without the footwork, you won't be able to apply certain kicks and you won't be able to get out of the way of kicks, punches, and someone shooting for take down quick enough and that's what makes Jeet Kune Do deadly. People talk about the stop hits and stop kicks and all the other principles but it's the really the footwork that makes it what it is. The footwork and wing chin are the 2 most important aspects. And it's even easier to apply BJJ when you k ow Jeet Kune Do because of the trapping. Like fir example, if someone mounts me, instead of me doing an oppa by using my hips so hus body lunges forward when he starts to punch at your face, you can do a chune Sao and redirect his punch and flip his body forward from the trapping in that specific technique.

The Gracies were a huge problem for Gene cause he couldn't shoot his mouth off about Grappling because the Gracies were so much better. He's tried many times to discredit them behind their backs. All this time he never rolled with any of them and why is that? Cause he avoided them. Rorion challenged him once and then there was this crap about why he didn't accept that he was too old as he was in his 60's and Rorion in his 40's. That was just an excuse since there were many Gracies closer to his age if age was a factor but Carlsen was 65 at the time and Gene didn't fight him so it was an excuse. Bob Wall was only disrespectful to Royce because he was on the side of Gene Lebell so that's why he was a jerk. Got scared too fast for it to become physical though. Bob Wall told a different story about how he kicked Royce and that was a lie. We hear what really happened from Norton here.

Why didn't the Gracies invite Gokor to UFC 1? Royce probably would have been spanked soundly Sakuraba style🤣
@antimediaman935417 күн бұрын
@@vecna2422 Because Gokor doesn't compete in no holds barred and therefore he didn't come to the UFC. He could have fought. He was invited as well as anyone even Gene himself.

@@vecna2422 Gokor for your info was never Genes student he was a chanpion in his homelemd way before coming to the UFC. When he won the gold medal it had nothing to do with Gene and he said as much and said also that his relationship with Gene was a business one at that.

19:48 “ and of course the Machados carried on that mantra as well.” With all due respect sir, NO THEY DIDN’T! The Machados teach sport bjj, not bjj for fighting or self defense. I know this for a FACT.

I train sport focused bjj/mma gym. One of my training partners got jumped by two guys while at a company function in Vegas last weekend. Dude is a a blue belt and managed to choke them both out before hotel security showed up. Only mark he got was teeth marks of the second guy trying to bite his way out of a RNC. GJJ is a great system with easy to follow guidelines for belt promotion. But acting like the Machado‘s or any other BJJ is less effective and self-defense is a false prophet narrative to a degree.
@WolframtheBlessed349919 күн бұрын
@ I am happy to hear that your friend came out mostly ok from his encounter. But, the fact remains they DON’T teach self defense or fighting, they teach sport bjj. I can show you how to garden 🪴, and you can still take a small gardening shovel and defend yourself with it, for sure. Had his attackers been boxers with a good sprawl, and a picket knife, the outcome may have been different. Stay safe, my brother.

The downfall of a martial art seems to begin with the sportification of the martial art.

Ahh that sounds like a Bob Wall/ O'Hara thing to do, throw a surprise front kick at a young unknown Royce Gracie. Royce would've still choked Bob out, even in 1988. 🙏🥋💥

@@sysomyoung7437 Even Al Bundy is a 3rd Dan in BJJ and he has commented about the Chuck Norris gang as being awesome practitioners
Chuck Norris would have utterly destroyed Bruce Lee in an actual fight. One was a true and absolute fighter and the other was simply a martial arts practitioner and actor. Even Jean-Claude Van Damme is far more legitimate than Bruce Lee ever was. Speaking of Lee's, Cung Le is the only martial arts actor who deserves the lore that surrounds Bruce Lee- dude is one of the best martial artists and fighters to ever walk the planet and pretty much no one's ever heard of him outside of the martial arts community. Bruce Lee is a man I greatly respect but he was a Hollywood manufactured legend- Nothing more and nothing less- he was not a badass.

You speak highly of Chuck Norris and put Bruce Lee down but Chuck Norris himself viewed Bruce Lees skills and knowledge in so much high regard that he was taught by Bruce Lee for 2 years. No one of Chuck Norris's caliber would do that with a phony.

@derrick_smitty I can unequivocally prove you wrong. Chuck Norris essentially said in an interview that Bruce Lee would have no chance against him in a real fight. I can easily find the video if you want it...

@ no sir Chuck Norris did not say that I know the video you were referring to and you are mis quoting. He simply said that he was a professional fighter and that he and Bruce did not want to go there when the interviewer asked did they ever fight each other.
@derrick_smitty19 күн бұрын
@ Chuck Norris competed in point karate tournamentts in which punches to the head or face were not allowed and kicks were not delivered with full power and had to be controlled. He did not participate in full contact kickboxing like some of his contemporaries did later on like Joe Lewis and Bill Wallace. Bruce Lee practiced full contact sparring with punching to the face , head ,take downs and submissions Joe Lewis a for real full contact champion credits Bruce Lee for getting him involved in full contact fighting.
