What I take from the ending is that he, like many people who get addicted to the thrill, lost sight of what was really going on. The establishing shot with his colon at first seems ridiculous and arbitrary, but in the grand scheme of the film we see that he's desperately concerned about his mortality, and got a colonoscopy because his father died of colon cancer. Like any adrenaline junkie, he's managed to completely dissociate this threat from his sense of being, even as he dies and we see the bone sticking out of his flesh not unlike the bone in the intro sequence of the movie from the mining injury. To me it still seems as though Sandler's character has won at the end because he did win his bet. His discussion with the basketball player at the end foreshadows it. It's not about the material pleasure of having the money, his ego is tied to the notion of winning, so he lives and dies for it.

I just realized that the start of the film. He was in the doctors office getting checked up. Later in the film the doctor calls to tell him he's fine. I feel as if that was an underlying message that his death was going to happen in the film and it was going to be something else besides his health. Sadly he got killed. I just realized that.
@TheMisfitPond5 жыл бұрын
Great insight on that. I also think it was a way for the filmmakers to subvert the audiences expectation as well. Cause most films would have the main character end up being diagnosed with cancer to add drama and hopelessness within the character and story. But here it kinda flips that on its head while also contributing itself to the themes of chance and odds.
@xaviiiiv5 жыл бұрын
It shows how he values money and the trill more than his health, his good health condition wasnt good enough
@soulfulspec4 жыл бұрын
I think it was also to make the audience feel even a little more unsure and uneasy about his demise. Becusse if his second dr had delivered his diagnosis, the audience would have justified the death in their minds by saying he was gonna die miserably of cancer anyway so this is betrer". But by alluding that he is fine, the movie creates even more elements for cognitive dissonance in its audience.

I think it’s certainly about his gambling addiction, but it seems more like Howard is running to repay all the people he’s pissed off, and I was never sure throughout the movie whether he had confidence in his gambling, or if he was just addicted to the euphoria of winning, and putting up a front as though he has control, hoping that he will finally win big

What I got from this, besides anxiety, you could see Howard is any man with an addiction. He is a husband and father that ruins his own life. He rolls out the garbage, go to school plays, go to passover meals, like our father, husband, brother, uncle, he could be that person. His gambling addiction was going to be the end of him whether it was this chapter or next. We root for him to win big so he could stop but it would have never. He will just go to the next bet. That's how he ended up with so much debt in the first place.
@NateGH36O5 жыл бұрын
I never thought of him “getting high” off of gambling other peoples’ money, I just saw him getting off on it, but you’re totally right. He wasn’t just addicted to gambling, he was addicted to the surge of endorphins he gets living that lifestyle.

How about the zoom in after Howard dies? Like he told KG when describing the opal that there are 2 kinds, red opals (which aren’t worth shit) and black opals. Once we see Howard lying on the ground the camera zooms into blood that looks similar to a gem. In my opinion that is saying that now Howard isn’t worth anything because he is dead.

Thanks Perry! I appreciate you watching the analysis! And re watching uncut gems !
@knurdyob5 жыл бұрын
Personally I think that although the film is definitely about chaos and chance, the most important reason for using the gem in the story thematically is because it is just like the main character. Like is mentioned in this video, people find them and mold them into what they want them to look like, howard is an uncut gem, no matter how much the universe tries to mold him into something different, he is always going to be a romantic, no matter how much things around him tell him to stop, that it's impossible to come out on top, he's always going to stick to his unhealthy belief that he can best the odds and keep on doing what he has been doing his whole life. This analogy that howard is the uncut gem is further emphasized by how the film goes into the black opel at the start of the film, and then seamlessly transitions to being inside the main character. At the end once again the camera goes into howard himself, and we see the universe, just like he said to kevin garnett about the black opels: "This is so old people say you can see the whole universe when you look into them" something along those lines. At its core, the film is about being a hopeless romantic, as the directors themselves described the character in interviews.
@TheMisfitPond5 жыл бұрын
Very thoughtful take! Thanks for sharing it with me! Makes interpretative sense lol
@knurdyob5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMisfitPond Actually I just watched a video of the directors and adam sandler talking about one of the scenes and they talk abit about the symbolism and meaning of the black opal, they say that howard is the gem because its something that's perceived as having no value at first, but you'll see it if you dive deeper into it (in case of the black opal when they are "cut") so howard is like an uncut gem the whole film and perceived as a crazy impulsive man until the end when his actions are weirdly validated by his victory. anyway I feel both of our takes on it still make sense though and are valid analogies of the film

Great analysis! I definitely agree with your points. Here's a comment I posted on another video fresh off of seeing the movie: "Anybody else think Kevin Garnett's last name is strangely perfect for this movie? A garnet is a deep red precious stone: symbolic of this film's marriage of violence and greed. Howard wants Kevin to be just like him so bad: to think that his addiction is really any more the same as not settling for less than Garnett playing his best in game 7 when it's really an unquenchable, incalculable existential void -- the unattainable perfect win. A garnet is much like what Howard's fatal wound at the end of the film ends up looking like: a red precious gem. To me the film plays around with cosmic bullshit and coincidence: luck and circumstance and the chaos of existence as the only true governing force in Howard's life, everything else amounting to hollow shells. The end of the film cements his irredeemable essence: it was never about paying a debt, but sending a message. It's a Death of a Salesman-like spirit: we see a character condemned to death, a failed afterimage of a man, grasping in futility for his faded potential."

The character "Argo" dying is what made me sad the most. Argo could have already had Howard killed if he wanted to but he was actually being somewhat "nice" to him by giving Howard chances. Argo shouldn't have died but because he was actually being somewhat kind... he was seen as weak which led to him being killed. If Argo was ruthless, his henchmen would have never imagined turning on him because they would have feared being killed (and still could be killed) in a much worse way

Hey I was wondering if there is deeper meaning and symbolism to the scene where KG breaks the glass. I feel like there was symbolic intent behind this scene, it seemed too pronounced to just have a mundane purpose. That same glass case was later smashed by Phil after he kills Arno and robs the jewels. Also, Arno and the goons themselves were trapped in a glass case, although an unbreakable bulletproof one. I'm trying to connect these dots but I could be overthinking it. Is there some meaningful motif here with glass?
@Patrick-de8qg4 жыл бұрын
@steve arison That is a good point about glass breaking from pressure. It is true and relevant. I just googled symbolism of glass and the first result says "Glass symbolism is dual. It represents things that are fragile but also things that are protective and strong." The goons are personifications of Howard's demons. I think maybe the goons trapped behind the glass while he "safely" watched the final game is a symbol that he could see the looming danger of his actions but he felt protected by something, maybe his feeling of invincibility. And that he felt winning would always solve his problems, hence him letting them out of the glass trap after he won the game.

Excellent analysis, I felt the same way but couldn’t put it into the right words (literally saw it 30 mins ago). The rock as an analogy for the universe is all too fitting, as Howie and KG are the only two to be seen holding the ACTUAL gem (not just carrying it in some box). This is why KG wants the gem so badly, he wants the universe in the palm of his hand. Howie and KG’s final conversation discusses the uselessness of the numbers, and how people are in control of their own destinies. KG takes this to heart and pretty much agrees with him. When he finally buys it the opal from Howard, he wins against the odds. When Howie gives it up, he’s finally exposed to the chaos of the world and shot in the head.

Many comments I’ve read have said that his death was the best for the story and I do agree - Garnetts speech supports it well. I also think his glasses are symbolic to a sense of blindness ironically. He always asks where they are when he loses them, and I think it provides a sense of security but like I said blindness. Just curious, how old are you? Because I could see maybe a 12 year old thinking this movie was “cool” but besides that, I feel like any half way intelligent person who knows the difference between a good movie and a bad movie knows that this was just awful.
@TheMisfitPond5 жыл бұрын
Tucker Ray that’s an incredibly arrogant and ignorant thing to say. As if older people are automatically more intelligent than someone who is much younger. And to suggest that only dumb immature people can enjoy this movie is also completely ridiculous and arrogant. You’re talking to someone is 25 years old, has a bachelors in filmmaking, and saw this film with my dad who is 50 and my aunt who is 38 and they both loved it. She has nothing to do with it. There are many areas of filmmaking where it excels, would you like me to break all that down for you?
@tuckerray49725 жыл бұрын
The Misfit Pond I’m not saying older people are automatically more intelligent. I’m saying obviously kids are more immature than adults and I could see some kid being like “oh this movie was so cool.” Yes, please break it down to me how this movie was good Mr. film major.
@TheMisfitPond5 жыл бұрын
Tucker Ray yea but you’re definitely implying that the appeal here must be from some sort of immature unintellectual source which is extremely unfair to say. And yes what makes this film so great is that it’s able to convey the chaotic life of a gambler in the city that lives his whole life on the edge. The direction of the camera work, the score, and how the dialogue is delivered throughout the film makes it feel incredibly chaotic but realistic for 2 hours straight. It’s not easy at all to have characters talking over each other for a large portion of the film and and still give the audience an idea of what is occurring with each scene. It represents the themes of chaos and chance to the best of its ability through this vision and is consistent with it. Not right me film the incredible charismatic performance from Adam Sandler that makes this film extremely entertaining to watch while also allowing the viewer to root for a character that isn’t exactly a great person. This analysis I made also contributes to why I think the film conveyed its themes incredibly well in an organized way in a yet chaotic manner. The ending is also priceless and unpredictable for the majority of viewers and provokes a serious unforgettable reaction.

What about the demonic presence represented by the goon, who in the very first scene he appears in, slaps Howard in the face and sets the threatening mood of an evil force that has an irritating and anger evoking twisting entitlement? Forcing his greed based will upon another person without any trace of human spirit. Emanating an urge for destruction that is infectious. It all boils down to a battle of opposing wills. Howard, convinced of the truth of his will, locks up the will of the evil force, hoping he will be able to convince it of the truth, of the benefit he will be able to accumulate for everybody. When being sure of having won he thinks the abundance of the resulting profit would overwhelm the evil force he has trapped and make it realize how he was right all along. Instead the demonic power he was entangled with from the very beginning of the movie is catapulted out of its trap to fulfill its nature. That guy made the whole movie work.

I just remember in school writing a story with an ending like the ones movies put out now would have gotten a lower grade because it had no concrete ending on purpose and is left to interpretation, but now it's art in million dollar movies.
@MrStupididy5 жыл бұрын
Id write shit like that in creative writing, was always asked to explain it away and that absolutely ruins art. They tell you enough of what you need to know. KG’s post-game interview was screaming in your face ‘its all about the win, nothing else matters.’ And howie fucking beat all odds. Absolutely he pulled it off, no matter what happened next. He ended on a W.
@uhuhuh19665 жыл бұрын
You never wrote a story like this in school quit lying. This film couldn’t have ended in any other way and there is no interpretation, he sealed his fate and that’s what happens when you let your life be controlled by your addictions. It’s very simple, I’d hate to see your reaction to something like The Lighthouse which actually is left up to interpretation.

I think that the film is a warning to Jews. Howard, the Jewish diamond dealer gets him and his brother and law killed by the Gentile gangster, even after he won a bunch of money and could pay them back. They shoot him anyway, because for them they feel too insulted by Howard's behavior. Howard let's them out of the cage because he has the money, and doesn't understand why you would kill someone who can pay you, money is important to them, but honor at a certain level is more important, especially to Gentiles. There are many other interesting symbols regarding Jews, like when Kevin Garnett breaks the glass (the night of broken glass under the Nazi government). The fact that the gem is hidden within a fish (Jesus feed his followers with 2 fishes and 5 loafs of bread etc). Another interesting thing is that his mistress wears a Cristian cross around her neck. She is also Howards biggest enabler, and even loans money for him. Suggestion that the church was in some ways an enabler of the Jews in Europe, causing them to go into money lending. And in the end the gentile ganster ( who was undoubtedly raised Christian, likely an Irish or Italian Catholic) kills Howard over pride, and having lost his religious sense of morality, has no qualms about killing this Jewish speculator.
@anticontrarian37885 жыл бұрын
I think it also is a warning to the rich as well, and not just wealthy Jews, but I think it's a specific warning to them, and as you can see at the end of them film, the money lending and gambling Jew is killed, and gets his Jewish brother in law who is more responsible than Howard killed anyway.
@kh76884 жыл бұрын
But why did the debt collector kill him after he'd won their money? Why risk prison by killing someone, when you could just collect your money and be done with it? I appreciated the symbolism with the gems, I even appreciated the rough, coarse editing which represented an Uncut gem. I still don't understand why he killed Ratner though...

Chaos randomness and chance are all the same thing. And the universe is just as much defined by order. The true theme in this movie is how everything is connected and how at the core of even the most repulsive and asinine people is brilliant value.

They’re synonymous sure. But they don’t always mean the same thing. They can mean slightly different things depending on context. But point taken. And I also agree with your take about the connectivity
