@@nimmin8094 you just proved my point lol. Protagonist can be the hero lead, person you root for etc... His character is so bipolar (lack of better word). I think he is truly addicted to the rush of living on the edge and just barely escaping and each time he does he wants to raise the stakes higher. The last 15 minutes of the movie are honestly oke of my favorites last 15 minutes of the year. I legit came home from the theater like 1 hour ago and I still canr believe what happened at the end. Like legit I honestly feel so bad and happy for howard. Happy cause I think his death is honestly in a weird way a good thing I mean before he gets shot he seems to he smiling and thats most likely from winning his bet but then I took a shower and in the shower I realized that he honestly probably could have done something about the gun and he chose to get shot so what if howard let himself get killed cause he knew he was 2 deep in debt also he knew he had scored big time. So what if the ending although being very brutal and tragic what if it's honestly just a dark happy ending . I mean honestly we all know that if he had stayed alive he would have most likely fucked julia , and then go out and do another crazy ass bet with his money and most likely get into even more problems. I personally really hope that when the Blue Ray comes out they have an alternate ending where he didn't get shot because I can imagine in my head what would have happened but I would just love to watch it. I honestly think the safdie brothers are one of the best directing duos that are coming up.

Lovely, good-humoured review -- thank you! 🙏🏼 I only watch movies on DVD, so I can play 'editor' Blindingly brilliant movie, but I need 3 things -- this was 2 out of 3 for me....... 1) It looks gorgeous! In every situation, from the sterile glare of the gem shop (did they plan for the counter to break?) to the moody blues of the City by night. 2) The ensemble playing ---- here, it takes a leaf from the Opera Playbook; was the chaos organised, or were the actors given a cue & then allowed to run with it? Several scenes where everybody is talking at once, without gumming up the works .......constant, chaotic flow (is that possible?) 3) Character development? Well, not really, & probably not even possible: we're given snapshots of all the characters --- including the non-actors --- but there's not much growing space in a film that moves at breakneck speed; We see the hostility between Howard & his brother-in-law, but not everyone is aware that it's HE who's hired the goons to extort money that he's owed: it's not initially clear why they're in the gem shop --- are they. dealers, bodyguards --- but the dirty looks at seeing KG & his entourage give it away; Apart from incidents like that, the characters stay in place for the entire movie....... I grew to love 'Uncut Gems', but it IS likely to cause anxiety (a cosy night-in with a speed freak?) A friend said that it made him think of a particular time when Bowie & Iggy Popp --- both off their faces --- were careering from one nightmare to another --- all of it very fast; & many people thought it hedonistic, glamorous even, & wanted to be part of it...... In the end, it's a heartbreaking take on gambling addiction (Or -- as you point out --- any addiction!) It's unlike anything else, & it's the whole thing.....the colour, the camerawork, the totally gorgeous score, the editing, the non-acting, of course! It's been pointed out to me that the movie was shot on very fast film, resulting in a grainy quality; they also used long lenses when they wanted a close-up during a crowd scene + the actor would feel less vulnerable (it also cuts down the depth of field, blurring the image behind the focus) Here endeth what I know about photography; but I hope that with a little tweaking I can watch the movie in Black & White! 'Film Noir'?? Thank you for your review -- it gave me a lot to think about; from Brighton 🌈 UK, take care & be well y'all! 🙏🏼🌹🙏🏽, AND 💙💙💙

I really liked the sort of meta way the audience is sucked into Howard's experience - as you become invested in him and the story, you're watching the events unfold in a way that mirrors him when he watches the games he's bet on. And you're 'gambling' by hoping for him to win or at least get away relatively unhurt. The ending was brilliant in that right as Howard's biggest gamble yet pays off, that gamble taken by the audience is effectively a bust.

Christian Letellier he’s. An. Addict. If he could bet *only* the 65k, he never would have ended up in this situation to begin with. Plus, he wasn’t actually up 65k. To be fair - the initiating factor was Howard's trip to the hospital. It's like a countdown had been set on his life and he comes to the decision to make The Bet. After all, what does he have to lose? The surreal sound and color palette gave the film a hyper-reality feel. Like his brain had dumped every last ounce of useful hormones into his system for the ultimate fight-or-flight ride. But like a meth addict who hits the ultimate high - what comes up must come down.

The ending... was really unfortunate. I hate it but I love it. I hate it for obvious reasons but it was well done with a good moral lesson. 9/10 movie

Sandler was excellent. The film is good, I think the 2nd act is rough and I can see some people walking out but if you stay for the 3rd act , the script pays off and everyone’s rewarded. It’s sooo much over talking which plays into stereotypes that you’re ready to walk the hell out. Lol . It’s set up for a rewatch because you miss so much. It’s a interesting movie. Glimpsed of a certain Jewish family in NYC. Black and Jewish relationships.

Something the movie doesn't make a big deal about, so you'd almost miss it, is that the watches he keeps giving people that he owes money to are the Demany's watches that he (LaKeith Williams) had trusted him to be keeping safe in his vault.
