Cargo Bar Method - GENIUS!

those poles look awesome. Looks like a little less setup than what i do for an oversized softbox or scrim. I dry negatives in a 3x3x8 grow tent. Sometimes i use the frame as a scrim or the tent as a softbox.

That’s a really good idea. I never considered using cargo poles. Good job. :)

To be fair I saw someone else do it with a similar system, liked it and adopted it! :D
@northcoaststudios2 жыл бұрын
OOOoooo....clever with those cargo bars. Seems much more stable, and less to trip over. I use a background support to hold up a skrim but the legs of the stands are very wide and that can be an issue with set-up in some locations. The cargo bars would eliminate the tripping hazard.
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Definitely! It's why I switched to the task pole/cargo bar setup, it kept me from making mistakes and getting really upset during productions.

Those types of bars can also be used from wall to wall as a makeshift ceiling grid. You can hang light weight leds with clamps. Just make sure you're hitting studs and no dry wall haha.

very smart, I see the video was uploaded a few years ago and looks like its still solid! any updates to it at all? Also with the second method do you always have to have the cargo bar supported by the ceiling of the roof or can it be lower. for example if I wanted to use this for an outdoor scene with no ceiling.

Hey Heather, loving your channel, learning lots :) One thing I'd love to learn more about is gels. A lot of KZbinrs either use the correct color temp light for general lighting, then RGB lights for small feature lights or practicals. But I almost never see color correcting gels on barndoors for general lighting, or background washes, or compositional feature lighting. Is the age of gels dead? Are people preferring bi-color lights and taking the power hit on the chin, rather than getting a full-powered daylight lamp and pegging an orange gel over it? Or is it the case that gel use is for large sets and big lights only? Granted, small RGB pocket lights come with many special effects that gels can't reproduce... But if there's a need for orange and blue lightning flashes, do people cover their small practicals with gels, or do most colorize these in post? Thanks!
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
The age of gels is not dead :D RGB is not as powerful as daylight only lights, so there is still a benefit to gels (tho keep in mind you do still lose intensity with certain color of gels since that's how coloring light goes) Gels are great if you don't need RGB often and want a simple enough solution. I still have gels and from time to time I use them when I need a light to be a certain color that is not typically rgb
