How do you play on golf courses that you haven't played before??

I either use the gps on the cart to plot out how to play the hole, or an app on my phone like 18 birdie’s. When I played some of my bucket list courses I got a caddie to help me navigate. My friend and I try to play a new course every Sunday while we try to play all the top 20 courses in my state. Playing a new course feels like waking up as a kid on Christmas morning!

The numbers don't play out for me. I may be a special case, but I actually keep a separate track of what my handicap would be if I just played new courses and it's a full 7 strokes higher than my real handicap which of course also includes those numbers. It's just that the courses I play the most far outnumber the courses that fall into the "new" category because I live on a course and play it 5 days a week. So all those higher scores on the away games get washed out. One other thing. I took up playing with couple of high handicappers I met a couple years back and I was taking them to a new course every week and that actually got them depressed enough that I changed it to giving us 3 tries at each new course. We set a goal on each one based on our handicap and the courses slope rating. Anyway, getting 3 chances both raised their spirits, and it also lowered all our handicaps and upped the average we hit our goals. Knowing where the hazards and and being more than just passively familiar with the greens is a needed ingredient. I get the mindset. I just don't see it working for all. Maybe you have to be a better golfer than we are to find freedom there. lol Otherwise. Good stuff. Love the advice. Lot's of it I already do.

Almost never to my handicap. My best guess is that it's because I play the same 4 or 5 courses all the time and know the subtleties of the greens, and where to miss. When I get to a new course I don't have any of that "local knowledge", and it really screws me.
@BIGBALDYBEAR12 жыл бұрын
I've played 23 different courses this year all over the UK. I'd say 19 were played for the first time (blind) I tend to trust my mobile app, it knows better than me how far I hit and generally chooses the right club.

Great video Andy! A new course always helps me utilize course management a bit more because I have no idea where I'm going. I love seeing your process for breaking the new course down and hitting where you can see, playing safe, and having a good time.

Thanks Joe. I have to agree with this comment. I think it freshens up our minds to play in a different way as opposed to be overly aggressive on courses we know

I love playing new courses. It forces me to play smart and manage my round better. I usually score better as a result. Plus it's always nice to experience different holes and see new beautiful sights along the way. My only problem with new courses is trouble with the greens. Sometimes takes me 5 or 6 holes before I get used to speeds and such. Good video Andy. I enjoy the commentary with each shot.

My personal best was a round where I only hit driver once and didn’t take 3 wood out at all. Irons off the tee meant much less trouble. Enjoying watching through your catalog of great content while I’m not able to play.

Great playing Carter!! Loved your thinking processes in this video. Yeah I have played a lot of new courses in my monthly tournament golf league...we travel all over....I try to keep in play mostly on new courses.... I will give up some distance off the tee a lot to make sure I stay on the fairway...that usually works but not always lol. The Sierra foothill courses near me were the toughest to play the first time...lots of trees...lots of down then up again fairways...canyons...streams...and rocks...fun stuff lol

Sometimes its a cAse of taking less club off the tee for fairways but make sure the next shot isnt too difficult. I had the same dilemma on hole 15

Shot one of my best scores this year on a course I hadn't played before. But, as you say, some of that was being oblivious. I remember one hole we came back up the side of the parking lot and I didn't realize it was on the left side of the fairway with all of the trees that were there. Walking up my jaw dropped when I realized how close my tee shot was to the parking lot on the left side of the fairway. Was way more nervous next time I played that hole on another day and hooked a tee shot into the woods on the right (I am a lefty).

Thank you, thank you for this video that is spot on how I take on a new course. I do have to accept to have longer approachshots to the green wich is often the reason why I pick the driver way to often to avoid and have shorter shots in for GIR. I think this winter is focus on irons from fairway

No longer play as now housebound disabled but still love the game. I came down from 12 to 7 handicap in one season by learning how to really manage my way around a course. No hours spend hitting balls just understanding the best places to MISS the target. Of course as my scores improved so did my confidence so that was a big factor in the handicap reduction. By doing this new courses held no fears for me. Linking this to hard work and lessons from my Pro ended up with a playing handicap of 2.

To answer your question at 8mins l, Yes I do find I not so much play "better" on a new course I feel like I enjoy the round more, I think when I'm on my local course I expect to play better, on a new course I have no expectations and I don't beat myself up as much after a bogey or worse and I'm even happier with a par. Love the vids bud thank you kindly ⛳🏌️♂️

It's funny you said that Titleist had never made great fairway woods. My buddy was an exec at Titleist and they had a golf outing for their employees near their USA HQ (we lived about 20 minutes away from the facility back then). All the employee golfers had to play all Titleist clubs. The CEO, Wally Uihlein, showed up and had Callaway fairway woods in his bag. When a bunch of them asked why he didn't have Titleist fairway woods, he said "when we ever learn how to make a damn fairway wood, I'll put it in the bag". Ouch. The engineers must have taken him to heart because their fairway woods are getting much better.

Sometimes it helps to not know where the trouble is as much as having played the hole before. Example , people are creatures of bad habits. Oh I hate the 3rd, or I can’t manage the 5th green.
