I wrote a paper last semester on the dangers of overconsumption, and I have always tried to not fall victim to it. The aestheticized "underconsumption-core" kind of bothers me because I think that is what everyone should be doing in the first place, but at least people are starting to become more environmentally friendly this way. I think people are finally waking up to how over-saturated and over-simulating every aspect of our lives has become due to overconsumption.
@Michael-gv7ut4 ай бұрын
My only problem with the label "underconsumption core" is that it's a label. I doubt that these influencers that prop up this trend will turn it into a lifestyle, despite the "lifestyle" of underconsumption being the appeal. Also, the trend feels a lot like the "rich people cosplaying being poor" phenomenon that we see. If someone from a lower-class background saved every last drop of their toothpaste, never bought new clothes, and saved instead of consumed, then they would be labeled "ghetto" or "poor." The sad thing is, you need to have the means for overconsumption in order to perform underconsumption, and that this is just another trend that will blow over soon.
@lulupomegranate4 ай бұрын
@@Michael-gv7ut Most people posting it aren't influencers though? They're just normal people. And underconsumption isn't about spending less, it is about buying less. If you think it is purely about money then you misunderstood the trend.

@neonradius4 ай бұрын
fun fact, back when planes were more dangerous and people were more worried about them, you used to be able to buy life insurance policies at a vending machine before your flight. They usually cost $2.50 and you paid in quarters. This led to cases where people would sabotage flights on purpose (there was a particularly infamous case that results in 39 passenger deaths), but the main reason it stopped was because of business. People just stopped being as scared of flights, so they stopped anxiously buying life insurance policies, so lower demand. Just an interesting example of how perceptions of airlines have changed, and how that changes the business of air travel.

In regards to clothing overconsumption when traveling: I love using and reusing clothes when i travel. I have dresses i used and reused in different parts of the world, that i feature multiple times on my ig. Why not? I look good in it, its good quality, and who cares (nothing worse than an outfit rememberer in the words of Lizzie McGuire). We got used to disposable clothing, when in the past clothing was a time capsule. It was an event to look at my mom’s closet. She would share stories of her clothing, places she had been with them, and pass it along to me (many that i still own). It was no heirloom, not anything fancy, yet still a legacy.

I also think meticulous travel planning is a result of the fact that genuine vacations and time off are so uncommon for most Americans - it gives us an opportunity to fantasize about the trip months (or sometimes years) before setting foot in the airport. In a sense, the trip can feel like it starts the second you start planning, making the actual trip serve as a grand finale to a multi-month long process.

But with that said, my favorite flying outfit when I’m flying leisurely is a t shirt maxi dress I got from Amazon. It’s comfy and stretchy and it comes in different colors or patterns. And it has pockets. It’s casual enough for comfort but also dressy. I usually pair it with a closed toe flat and a cardigan for when I’m chilly. I have a mini one, it doesn't take up much space, and I'm always glad I have it because I tend to travel in the fall when flights are cheaper, but even if you're going somewhere hot, it can become sun protection if you don't feel weird walking with an umbrella when it's not raining. And people underestimate the ability to do laundry on vacation. That has also been something I consider when booking air bnbs is if they have a washing machine. If you're going to Europe, bring tylenol becuase its just so much more expensive there (at least it is in Germany). I also bring a crossbody bag, but make sure that fits in like a backpack or something because airlines have started saying you can't actually have both

My travel hack is to google what people actually wear the place where I'm going. (Not street style on social media, just actual photos of people at restaurants in reviews and markets in people's normal travel photos.) That way I have a realistic idea of the weather, dressiness and modesty. It's just easier to transition in and out of places if you fit the general vibe, and you don't have to carry an extra shawl or something because you might want to visit a temple or because you thought Portugal is a tropical country. Nothing says "I'm not from here" more than a mismatched giant scarf. Secondly, don't pack anything new, especially shoes. You want to be comfortable and confident, not spend all day fussing. Third, lay all your items on the bed when you're packing; do they all generally "go" together? If you're packing light, it will make it easier to mix, match and layer if they do.

It's more affordable and convenient *if* you're not in the US. I looked into trying to take a train from Kentucky to Florida to take the kid to visit my parents. Oh man. What a mess. Take a bus to Nashville Tennessee, then take a sleeper bus from there to DC. In DC get an uber from the bus station to the train station, get on the train, take about 18 hours to get down to Daytona Beach. And the train tickets alone for a little changing room size space with narrow bunk beds costs more than plane tickets from Nashville to Daytona on short notice. And all that is only if you can get the timing right between both busses and the train and don't end up getting a hotel room in DC. What a mess. I'll stick with flying.

I can’t speak to the seating arrangements (in comparison to flying) bc I’ve never been on a plane lol. But from what I’ve seen of other people’s experiences, I’ve never had an issue with leg room on a train lol. And all the trains I’ve taken have a restaurant on the train that I end up spending more than half my time in bc they have larger windows and seating with tables (so it’s easier for me to use my laptop). Well-researched, I learn something new from every upload. Thank you. You just may be my favourite parasocial relationship. ☺ I wish "dressing up" for more mundane occasions was more popular these days, or at least not unusual. It can be difficult to find a reason to dress up or wear make-up if you work from home, are retired, are disabled, have employment status challenges or other issues, etc. I took maternity leave in 2012, fully expecting to go back to work afterwards. However, our family circumstances changed while I was pregnant so I didn't have to go back. I found motherhood to be such a pleasure that I chose to stay at home. During the first year, I wore my shabbier clothes, as I didn't want to ruin my "good" ones. Then, I had an epiphany one day- what was I saving the good clothes for?? I missed putting outfits together and styling them with my accessories. I missed that feeling you get when you're dressed smart and love your look- it's a real confidence booster. It definitely helped me to abandon my daily outfits based on yoga pants, lol. 👋

Packing tips (I think a lot of people already know these, but just in case!)- roll clothes or use packing cubes, if possible wear what's difficult to pack, wear layers on the plane, bring a couple of basics you can dress up or down, bring a small plastic bag of key things like meds in your purse so you'll have them even if you have to check what you planned to carry on and then they lose your bag (happened to me multiple times!), don't check anything if possible, bring a backpack instead of a suitcase if possible, bring a small umbrella, plan outfits if possible, portable charger, heavy items at the bottom of your bag.

About the underconsumption core: I didn't know about this trend, but I feel that not only a socio-economic critic about it, it's fare. I also think there could be a cultural layer too. I am from Italy and my partner is from Portugal and we just moved to Australia. There are some things here that are different from Europe (specifically, southern Europe), and we both get shocked at the consumerism of people here! For instance, people leave lights on when they don't need it, or buy new food way before finishing what they have. We are not from low socio-economic classes, I would say we are middle class, but we both have been taught to use what we have until it's really wasted, save energy, up cycle things etc. I don't know if USA is similar to Australia under this aspect, but it looks like so. I always enjoy watching your videos btw! Thank you so much❤

one of my favorite things to do while packing is coming up with as many outfit combos as i can with as little pieces as possible. i think i really perfected this when i studied abroad in 2019, i had a lot of cute outfits to wear around Italy but my suitcase was still a manageable weight that i could take it on trains and such!

As an irish person the Paul Mescal O'Neils shorts craze is genuinely hilarious to me. Im literally wearing my pair rn. The majority of 'lads' in Ireland wear these ALL the time like everyday it's practically a uniform and alot of women wear them too . To see the rest of the world loose their shit over them is the most bizarre thing to occur this decade

In New Zealand we have something kinda similar, by a brand called "Canterbury" my brothers used to wear them for sport/rugby practice and I had a pair that were issued from my school, in school colours
@thisisavivistanaccount78664 ай бұрын
honestly. wear what you want on the plane! I for one will be dressing cute (with a cardigan or sweater bc it’s cold up there!). Also when i look cute, I feel more confident and that helps me navigate the airport/not be so scared to ask questions.

This! If I'm going to need a coat or winter boots, you better believe I'm wearing them. I can always take off the coat (plus planes are freezing) and the boots are comfortable.

6:14 there is no space in the overhead, precisely because you and everyone else refuse to check your luggage. Partly its the airline's fault, as checked bags are no longer part of the fare price. Actually, planeside checking of luggage is thebest thing you can do. Costs nothing, and you dont have to goto baggage claim.

I think there's a lot to say about casual fashion; my mother didn't let me go to school in jeans and tee shirts until 7th and 8th grade because she didn't want me going to school looking like I didn't care. Casual fashion in public spaces feels like people are saying that the public vs. private divide doesn't matter anymore. Is that a good thing? I'd say there are pluses and minuses to this

When I worked at a luxury department store it SERIOUSLY skewed my perspective on consumption. A lot of my coworkers were buying high end shoes or handbags every paycheque while probably making $50k a year (this was about ten years ago). What you said about "is underconsumption core real" made me think of this - this was my celebrity/influencer culture moment! Talking to people who didn't work in that kind of environment, or just leaving it in general, was a serious wake-up call about overspending. Also, a lot of these people still lived with their families or had well-earning partners, so for those of us who actually had to pay our rent you could just never measure up unless you wanted to put yourself into serious debt.

Not sure why but this has been my favorite video of yours so far…I think I may have been curious about celebrity off duty style this entire time
@calliemyersbuchanan64584 ай бұрын
I forgot who it was but one celebrity was known for traveling painfully light with only the clothes on her back and essential personal toiletries (like tooth brush etc) because she would buy all new clothes from local shops at her destinations and then donate them to thrift shops before returning home. This was considered "so clever" at the time, but it's so wasteful!!!
@pandaseal16114 ай бұрын
I mean waste full but supporting the local economy and returning to them through thrift shops but it would not go now days
@andreaslind63384 ай бұрын
Not wasteful. She bought the clothes FROM A THRIFTSTORE, before redonating them at the end of her trip.

i've neverrrrr understood people that pay such large expenses on flying first class or flying expensive airlines. all my life i've been very fortunate to be able to travel so much and you best believe we are always flying spirit and coach. it also ties into only using a carry-on. to this day i have never checked a bag in and it saves so much time and money. what helps is finding a good light bag to take on with you. it might not be glamorous and you might have shoes tied to the outside of your bag but it's so worth it !! i would much rather spend the money on the actual destination and not on the trip there
