Wow. Thank you for this video and the clarification. I've always assumed that Berk's bulldog had a firepower similar to my .44 magnum. In fact, based on your demonstration, it appears to be closer to my .38 special which can easily be shot one handed. This makes so much more sense to me now. Great video.

Yes, the .44 special is closer in power to the .38 Special than the .44 Magnum.

Outstanding! I loved the shooting demonstration. I've never seen anyone try to replicate this. I own one of these revolvers, and I think they are great shooters within the parameters they are designed for. Marksmanship under those realistic conditions mirror the actual events. I think you got this one right. Love your channel!

Thanks for tuning in Wheat......nice to have you. Looked at your blog and believe it alluded to the fact that the bullet was removed from Harvey after he died years later to check to see if it matched the Bulldog ballistically and although it was a large caliber bullet about a half an inch in diameter it was not a match. Did not read if it was definitively determined to be a .44 caliber or a .45 caliber. If it was a .45 it should have been tested by law enforcement, in my opinion, against slugs fired through the Thompson replica. Seems my guess that it was a .22 was wrong however. Be well!

@@MilsurpGarage It was so deformed I doubt any one could have made a definitive evaluation. It could have been either a .44 or .45 - they are just to close as you likely know. DB was in Jail, Harvey was well and only slightly inconvenienced and seriously do you really think any DA would risk the ridicule of trying to waste tax payer money to add an animal cruelty charge or two to his sentence? Not to mention I am quite confident it would disappear along with the other things we had provided to YPD & NYPD My parents did not trust it would not as others things have, turn up on eBay, or in Maurice's book, etc.

@@MilsurpGarage Just curious, would you agree that (1) a .45 long rifle was unlikely to be able to pass thru a series of cement block walls. (2) Yes, a .44/45 at less than 30 feet would be a relatively easy shot?

⁠​⁠​⁠@@wheatcarr64911. Generally, a “cement wall” only a couple of inches thick will stop any conventional rifle or pistol shot. That is poured cement. If you’re talking about a cinder block wall then bullets of all types can and will pass through with different results depending on angle, distance, caliber, loading, etc….44 and 45 cal included…..especially through a rifle barrel which would impart a higher velocity than out of a handgun. 2. 30 feet is about half a bowling lane foul line to pins. That’s not far…..but there are always factors. Is it dark, is the target clearly visible? Are your hands shaking? Can you see the gunsights? Is the target moving? Are you moving? Are your glasses fogging up? Are headlights shining in your eyes making a glare? Are your hands cold? The variables are endless and always changing. No shot is easy in the real world.

Cool content sir. I own a Bulldog with the tiger stripe finish. I used to carry it more before clown world started. Now I carry a Beretta PX4 Storm compact from LTT, but I still like my Bulldog

Well just for that one shot that breaks it it might alter the trajectory a touch. Side window glass won’t affect .44 special rounds much….did it look like during the live fire demo that glass would deflect anything?

I just got done reloading a bunch of 44 special for my more modern stainless bulldog. I’d love to find a classic blued model like that one, but not as easy to find around me.

These were a short recoil design made from 1987 to 1993. The first version was instantly recalled.....something with the trigger (yikes!) I believe. The replacements were guilty of quality control and machining problems and were soon yanked from their lineup completely. I don’t own one of these and probably never will. I occasionally dispel bad reputation stuff and fall in love with certain models that have been hated on.....this is NOT one of them. This one sounds scary.

Interesting! Not particularly surprised by the accuracy in rapid fire at 25 feet, in low light conditions, especially with the triggers in Charter Arms. Are there any data on Berkowitz' shots fired versus hits (fatal or otherwise)? I don't recall seeing any specific analyses of that at the time or since.

@@MilsurpGarage It is, or much of it is, but is a PITA to dredge it out. For example, I located the NYPD file on the Donna Lauria/Jody Valenti shooting on July 29, 1976. [The first shooting] It is 155 pages in PDF format and takes forever to download. Still, some interesting facts emerged. Valenti said "3 or 4 shots" were fired, other unnamed witnesses said 4. Inspection of the car revealed bullet damage to driver's seat, metal trim. of passenger seat, and passenger window ("shot out"). Curiously a police report stated Lauria was pronounced dead at hospital by a Dr. O'Reilly due to a gunshot wound of the head, but the NYPD file cites the autopsy report by Dr. Presswalla revealed Lauria had injuries to arm. chest wall, lung and pulmonary artery, with internal hemorrhage. A single large caliber bullet was recovered. Later ballistic examination provided data that was sent to Charter Arms, Bridgeport CT, and a senior official at the company told NYPD there was no doubt that the murder weapon was a Charter Arms .44 cal. revolver. Valenti was wounded in left thigh. Subsequent NYPD records stated that the gunman fired with a two handed hold while in a crouch. So in this case he seemed to have hit the victims twice with three (or 4?) shots (at very close range since they were double parked and Valenti testified that the shooter stepped off the curb and fired). Given 6 homicides and 10 wounded, I'll never get through this.

@@thomasholohan4090 Some may think it’s easy to just gather info and make these videos but it’s actually very hard doing research like this on both events or on the firearms themselves……or both. That’s just the research for info, how to deliver it is another thing. It’s definitely a labor of love. I believe Berkowitz when he stated he fired all 5 at the first shooting. He specifically remembered continually pulling the trigger even 6,7,8 times or more dropping the hammer on spent chambers. His type of mentality during this crime was a lashing out, very typical in this type. Knife crimes with this mentality can result in hundreds of stab wounds. As time went on he became cooler, calmer, more relaxed. More calculated.

They are pretty robust revolvers but I would avoid any hot .44 special loadings and stick to mild stuff.

@@MilsurpGarage I bought one about 10-12 yrs ago(new and stainless )and had light primer strikes and cylinder would occasionally bind up. Got rid of it. I hear the older ones with no ejector shroud are the better ones.

Realistic Snap Caps are made for purposes that require realism…..military/police training, function testing, filming movies……and Milsurp Garage videos. There is an inherent danger to any aspect of firearm/munition handling and proper procedures must be followed to maintain a safe environment under all conditions at all times. I’ve heard your concerns before and I’ve always felt that if bright paint is what’s keeping you alive when using snap caps you might want to re-evaluate your safety procedures. That being said, no ridicule here. It’s also extremely important to work within the parameters of what you feel is safe. Of course they’re not for everyone. Stay with us, maybe my safety procedures and guidelines will rub off and instill a bit more confidence in the realistic looking snap caps.
