Obviously I am not a scout, but if I had the 1st pick, I would take Maye. I watched a lot of him and of Caleb Williams and I think Maye made way more nfl quality tight window throws. He also is taller, stronger arm and has awesome athleticism also. He reminds me of Justin Herbert.

Maye's the worst QB of the bunch, by far. Erratic. Bad decisions. Lousy in the pocket. Too many balls put up for grabs. His stock will continue to fall. New tackling rules also enter into play here. Lots more running and short passes AND protecting the football in 2024-25. Erratic is out. Consistency is in.

A 21/22 year old college QB is going to have flaws. That shouldn't be an issue. Having good coaches and a proper plan for their growth and development are the issues. I know it was a different time, but Steve McNair (hugely flawed, but talented) sat for 2 1/2 seasons. Became an MVP.

Really want him on the Vikings especially cuz we couldn’t trade up for AR last year. Would suck to lose out on that type of talent twice in a row. I do feel like though this ‘high potential’ stuff is getting carried with Maye. Yes the elite potential is what ur chasing but also his play right now is still just as good if not better than any of the other QBs in the draft including Caleb. I was an undersized D1 Pocket Passer. My mechanics and intangibles had to be perfect just to be competitive in D1. You can't get away with STEPPING INTO rush lanes in the NFL in a clean pocket, you can't struggle throwing to receivers with 5 yard of separation and you certainly cannot fix his mechanics without YEARs of training, it takes so long to fix those bad habits and the reality is- Maye could be a decent QB, but there's not as many vets to sit behind like 5-8 years ago.. And he WILL be forced to start if drafted top 5 and will have little help around him to fix those shortcoming. Most concerning is he has trouble moving through his progression when there are players he can throw open and if the first read isn't there he'll tuck and scramble even with a clean pocket at times (if you can actually read a defense this is clear). Moving through a progression it's also important to know how to do this on time man v zone. His timing when he tries to move through progression is non-existent BECAUSE of his terrible footwork, hence why his receivers often seem covered when going to the 2nd and 3rd read... or he has a wide open Post and he's already tucked the ball and scrambling (you can see that in one of the clips early in the vid).
@blakty2

Maye passed for 4,321 yards in 2022. His “elite” wr Josh Downs only accounted for 1059 yds. Ok he lost him. Who did the other 3,262 yds go to if he didn’t have any other talent to throw to? Because they didn’t all leave UNC. Suddenly they were Walmart workers and Bishop Sycamore players huh? It’s not easy to just walk on at a D1 school. You have to be good. Maye was throwing to both 3 and 4 star players at UNC the same as JD5 was throwing to his 4 star talents Nabors and BT. They literally weren’t shit until JD5 arrived. Check their 2021 stats and then check their 2022 stats when JD5 got there. Difference is Drake Maye got worse and failed to elevate his level of play and the players around him while JD5 and his cast got better. He didn’t inherit ELITE wr’s. They all grew simultaneously together. That’s the difference.

It makes no sense to sit maye. If he has flaws then he needs to play so those flaws can be captured at the nfl level and then you can figure out how to refine him to become better. Him not playing will never allow the opportunity for his team to see what needs to be fixed. Im also interested to know if evaluators are looking at only his junior season or his sophmore season as well.

I cannot agree. There is not a playcalling problem, if you misses wide open short throws. That are mechanics. And that was very often. And he wants to get drafted Top 5. Then you do not get a lot of help, you are in bad team. So for me he is a 2nd Rounder, and I think Chris Simms is absolut right in this point. Sit him develop him.

I've watched a decent amount of his play at this point, and I'm still not impressed, and it has less to do with his knowledge or his intangibles. Like even watching the video package you have of him in this video, he doesn't have to throw balls in tight windows, his guys are often open, the defenders are out of position, guys aren't making plays on the ball they're falling down or trying to tackle the receiver before the ball is even entirely there. The defenses he played against were bad both years, he didn't play a lot of good schools, he didn't get tested with his throws nearly as often as other QBs. I watched some film on Jayden Daniels from I want to say this last year, I saw a throw where he was on the run under pressure and he threw the ball into the tightest window I've ever seen a ball go through and he did it on the run, I also want to say he did it on his back foot or doing a jump pass but I could be confusing plays. And I see that up and down Daniel's film, so many of his throws are contested, through tight windows, placed so perfectly it's just a beautiful work of art. When I watch Maye play it's like watching a kid with a crayon. I have nothing against Maye I hope he succeeds. But I just don't know why people who are breaking down his game tape all over the place seem to overlook the fact that most of his good plays are a result of his guy being open or not being contested. I mean good that he can make those plays and great that he can put the ball where it's gotta be for them, but how often do you really get that in the NFL?

I dont think you get rid of those kind of bad habits that cause inaccuracy in a few months, and I feel like the time to solve those problems would have been in college, not while trying to adjust to being a starting QB in the NFL. Thats like trying to refine your swimming technique, while drowning. It's under all that extra cognitive load where those bad habits really start to rear their head. @wardog211
@wardog211 8 ай бұрын
It’s not like he’s super inaccurate. It’s just some of the polish on his drop back that comes from experience isn’t quite there yet. We even saw it from Stroud last year who struggled the first few weeks and Jordan Love who also struggled for the first half of last season and then in the second half both were playing at an easy top 10 level. That’s probably similar to what’s going to happen with Maye if he goes to a good situation.

@e2rqey 8 ай бұрын
@@jeffdwyer3809I don't think it's an obsession as much as it's that most of the teams who are in the position to draft in the top 3 of the draft are in a position where they: 1. Don't have any starting level QB's 2. Are mismanaged/fail to realize how to make a QB successful in the first place (demonstrated by the fact they are in the position of drafting a QB in the top 3) The best example of that this year is probably the Patriots. Chicago is actually a far better landing spot/situation for a #1 overall QB draft pick than we normally see those players dropped into. (See Bryce Young and the Panthers last season) That being said, I think there will still be the teams which try to do this. As you can still have the rare situations like what happened with CJ Stroud, where a QB comes into the league and is able to excel almost immediately.

You just demonstrated the disconnect that exists between draft analysts and actual NFL coaches and GMs when evaluating Drake Maye. Who has enough job security to wait the 2-3 years that could be required to fix Maye's mechanics and turn it into musle memory? Years that should've been spent in college instead of years losing NFL games. Instead, he chose to leave 2 years early, and now the team that drafts him will be forced to take the early hit while he figures it out. Former NFL QBs are lower on Maye because they know that fixing mechanics and footwork isn't as easy as draft analysts say that it is. Josh Allen did it by year 3. Sure, who else you got?

I trust Merill Hodge, and I think this was a big mistake. The accuracy isn't anywhere close to what it needs to be, and you see it all over his tape. The processing is even worse, and rarely improves much. Penix and Nix both evaluate better. The worst part is that it seemed like a complete FOMO pick by the new front office. If they really thought this was "their guy" they wouldn't have been seriously considering trades while on the clock. Had Jayden Daniels been there at #3, they wouldn't have even answered the phone. Instead it seemed like the trade offers made them worry that they'd be making a mistake by not taking him.

Sam Darnold, Mac Jones, Josh Rosen, Daniel Jones, Mitch Trubisky, Zach Wilson, they all went before better QBs and turned out to be below avg at best and the same will happen with Drake and JJ. Not looking at skin tone but actual production. Penix was NCAA passing leader, Daniels won the Heisman and yet some putting these guys ahead of them. It's Groundhog Day, all over again.

Go watch the film, Maye has Penix arm talent and Daniels mobility. He is a tier above them as a prospect. Penix and Daniels will have their WR2/3 drafted before Mayes WR1, it’s not even close to a fair fight for stats.

@@benmorgan9748Exactly you can tell he views everything through race, probably would cry racism if a white guy said this about all the trash black QBs that get drafted high

Lots of film of him throwing to wide open "windows". That does not happen in the NFL.

New tackling rules will change football. QB consistency is in and erratic/big play QBs are out. That's why Maye's draft stock is falling and those of McCarthy, Nix, Penix and Rattler are rising. Maye is, by far, the most erratic QB of the bunch. He makes bad decisions and he's lousy in the pocket. Lots more running, short passing game, and protecting the football in 2024-25.

Drake Maye is going to be the best quarterback coming out of this draft I hope that whoever picks him works on his mechanics and I would bet my house that he will be the best quarterback at the end of this upcoming season. Ryan Poles I hope gets fired because of him not being a great scout he is gonna be influenced by all the talk about CW and after 2 years CW might be out of the NFL sounds crazy right? CW will lead the entire NFL in turnovers I’m gonna take a screenshot of my comment so at the end of the year I can show the whole KZbin nation.

Definitely bro, I remember watching a North Carolina game and literally never even heard that he was projected to be a high pick in the draft. From like the first two plays I’m like wow this dude is special. He has that star power to make plays and elevate the offense. He’s young and still raw but man when he matures his game he’s gonna be a problem 😊

Just watch the Commanders because that’s were I believe he is going and Kingsbury is gonna work on his talents he is gonna be awesome in 2 years once he gets the feel of the NFL he is gonna be nasty. Your right though he puts the ball in tight windows and in stride dude is gonna be a good one

@jsintralhe was projected a high pick after his sophomore season at unc. All QBs have things to fix it's just the other guys had much better situations so their flaws didn't show up as much.

@@TheUndefeatedOfTheEast I keep telling people this. Some of the best qbs like mahomes and Allen played on trash teams with no talent and had to carry by themselves and didn’t win much. But when u just look at their skill alone, it was obvious that those guys should been rated higher
