I was an undersized D1 Pocket Passer. My mechanics and intangibles had to be perfect just to be competitive in D1. You can't get away with STEPPING INTO rush lanes in the NFL in a clean pocket, you can't struggle throwing to receivers with 5 yard of separation and you certainly cannot fix his mechanics without YEARs of training, it takes so long to fix those bad habits and the reality is- Maye could be a decent QB, but there's not as many vets to sit behind like 5-8 years ago.. And he WILL be forced to start if drafted top 5 and will have little help around him to fix those shortcoming. Most concerning is he has trouble moving through his progression when there are players he can throw open and if the first read isn't there he'll tuck and scramble even with a clean pocket at times (if you can actually read a defense this is clear). Moving through a progression it's also important to know how to do this on time man v zone. His timing when he tries to move through progression is non-existent BECAUSE of his terrible footwork, hence why his receivers often seem covered when going to the 2nd and 3rd read... or he has a wide open Post and he's already tucked the ball and scrambling (you can see that in one of the clips early in the vid).

Maye passed for 4,321 yards in 2022. His “elite” wr Josh Downs only accounted for 1059 yds. Ok he lost him. Who did the other 3,262 yds go to if he didn’t have any other talent to throw to? Because they didn’t all leave UNC. Suddenly they were Walmart workers and Bishop Sycamore players huh? It’s not easy to just walk on at a D1 school. You have to be good. Maye was throwing to both 3 and 4 star players at UNC the same as JD5 was throwing to his 4 star talents Nabors and BT. They literally weren’t shit until JD5 arrived. Check their 2021 stats and then check their 2022 stats when JD5 got there. Difference is Drake Maye got worse and failed to elevate his level of play and the players around him while JD5 and his cast got better. He didn’t inherit ELITE wr’s. I've watched a decent amount of his play at this point, and I'm still not impressed, and it has less to do with his knowledge or his intangibles. Like even watching the video package you have of him in this video, he doesn't have to throw balls in tight windows, his guys are often open, the defenders are out of position, guys aren't making plays on the ball they're falling down or trying to tackle the receiver before the ball is even entirely there. The defenses he played against were bad both years, he didn't play a lot of good schools, he didn't get tested with his throws nearly as often as other QBs. I watched some film on Jayden Daniels from I want to say this last year, I saw a throw where he was on the run under pressure and he threw the ball into the tightest window I've ever seen a ball go through and he did it on the run, I also want to say he did it on his back foot or doing a jump pass but I could be confusing plays. And I see that up and down Daniel's film, so many of his throws are contested, through tight windows, placed so perfectly it's just a beautiful work of art. When I watch Maye play it's like watching a kid with a crayon. I have nothing against Maye I hope he succeeds. But I just don't know why people who are breaking down his game tape all over the place seem to overlook the fact that most of his good plays are a result of his guy being open or not being contested. I mean good that he can make those plays and great that he can put the ball where it's gotta be for them, but how often do you really get that in the NFL?

It’s not like he’s super inaccurate. It’s just some of the polish on his drop back that comes from experience isn’t quite there yet. We even saw it from Stroud last year who struggled the first few weeks and Jordan Love who also struggled for the first half of last season and then in the second half both were playing at an easy top 10 level. That’s probably similar to what’s going to happen with Maye if he goes to a good situation.
@e2rqey8 ай бұрын
@@jeffdwyer3809I don't think it's an obsession as much as it's that most of the teams who are in the position to draft in the top 3 of the draft are in a position where they: 1. Don't have any starting level QB's 2. Are mismanaged/fail to realize how to make a QB successful in the first place (demonstrated by the fact they are in the position of drafting a QB in the top 3) The best example of that this year is probably the Patriots. Chicago is actually a far better landing spot/situation for a #1 overall QB draft pick than we normally see those players dropped into. (See Bryce Young and the Panthers last season) That being said, I think there will still be the teams which try to do this. Who has enough job security to wait the 2-3 years that could be required to fix Maye's mechanics and turn it into musle memory? Years that should've been spent in college instead of years losing NFL games. Instead, he chose to leave 2 years early, and now the team that drafts him will be forced to take the early hit while he figures it out. Former NFL QBs are lower on Maye because they know that fixing mechanics and footwork isn't as easy as draft analysts say that it is. Josh Allen did it by year 3. Sure, who else you got?
