When the subway goes under the water/beach I think it should be inside of a tunnel/tube and maybe it could go through a giant coral reef or shipwreck or underwater display. I also think you definitely need a subway station above ground to give the illusion of minifigures being able to access the subway

it could also go behind the table legs and have a bit of scenery with no train in a few places. an underwater scene or underground scene with no trains for example. possible even separate circuits with different types of trains in different parts of the city.

For the backdrop baseplates, you could glue or tape some small, flat magnets to the backside of the baseplates and drive a couple of screws flush into the wood to stick them in place. This would make it very easy to place and remove them when needed.
@Angrist17
@Angrist17 12 күн бұрын
You don't even need to glue the magnets in place. You can leave the on the "top" side of the baseplate and just cover them with bricks and they'll stick right through the baseplate.

I think the train going underneath the entire table is a great idea! Fun fact in The United Kingdom, there is a train tunnel that goes underneath the ocean in between Britain and France. so the section of train where it goes underneath your ocean is actually more realistic than one would think

I think its great. The train/subway will evolve and grow over time, but getting it up and running around the perimeter is a great first phase. Measuring it to be 1 baseplate width below the main level was genius, that's going to save you hundreds of dollars for sure!

There's a giant green monster hanging from a skyscraper that doesn't exist and no one complained about that lol. People saying the subway isn't "realistic" need to calm down and suspend their belief, it gives you the opportunity to make mini scenes that you wouldn't be able to do without it. It's a "magic" railroad, there everyone problem solved.

I like the idea of the train ramp to change elevation, and I don't know how well you are with LEGO Technic, but a LEGO elevator for the train under the mountain would use less space, and you wouldn't have to worry about the track grade.

@mariroseengert8666 12 күн бұрын
Why don't you build fantasy subway stations all the way around. The white tile like in real subway stations or tunnels would look so cool. Under your ocean you could put a fish/ mermaid section. Ice caves under the winter village. Fairy land/Gnomes. A witch's den. Apartments - like sci-fi types. Have fun. It is your layout and your wishes. I just enjoy your creativity!!
@DoctorSinister1

You could put a black curtain below the subway shelves to cover the wooden legs, with a gap at your access point - so people can’t see the legs and make it look like the city is sort of “hovering”.

@thegamingfez117
@thegamingfez117 12 күн бұрын
Looks awesome! A suggestion for how to get the trains from the lower to the upper level is something I've seen in the model train community called I think a 'helix spiral', where the grade is constant but in a circle pattern allowing you to go up gradually but not take up the entire length of the table if you were doing it with straights. Potentially there is enough room underneath the winter village to achieve such a structure. Plus if you have to buy more track packs, it gives a use for all the extra curves you'd end up with.
@Angrist17

AMAZING! FAN.TAS.TIC!!! Love the idea of the double line all around the layout. TrixBrix has some R56 curves to help make the curves parallel to each other. They also have an R40-R50 T-juntion that could help you with the transition from the underground layout to the ramp that connects it to the above-groung line. (I literally just got mine in the mail this morning!)

Keep your 360° dream. Just build a "Chunnel" under the water. In the country side have some rock raiders mining and helping build the tunnel while finding gems, subway tiled tunnels in the city, some sewer scenes (like an other guy said maybe ninja turtles) have snow whites dwarves mining in the hills. Etc.

It is going to be amazing with the subway. And it is not unrealistic to have The train pass underneath the ocean. The train between sweden and denmark does just that. That would open up for an epic under water scene. Maybe minifigs can enter subway stations through elevators.

You could 3D print 'guides' for the bottom of the removable shelves to help lock them into the shelving brackets. Think like a sheath for scissors. Also, if you put a thin shim in the center between the shelf and 2"x2", it'll cause the shelf will bow up very slightly and then be very resistant to drooping.

You could always get one of those car crawlers where you lay down on it on your back to get under the subway (like going under your automobile), then hop off and use your knee crawler once your under. Now you wouldn't have to remove any sections of subway. Just a thought. And I look at the Subway as just "underground" in general and not literally under the water, countryside, etc. It's its own thing, with maybe an exception to a station platform or two that go up to the street level, connecting the two areas in one or two spots.

Hey there! Here's an idea to make the shelves stable: You can glue wooden pegs under them that will go into the holes of the metal brackets (aligned), that way when they're removed, they'll lift off & when you place them back, they will drop into the holes with gravity holding them in. The wooden pegs would be like the ones found in shelving that you might find that you build yourself. You can even use metal screws..hmmm... Also maybe you should round off the four corners to the same circular diameter of the curved track?

What if the subway was just a small oval track at the front and went under the table about a foot or two. That would leave the rest of the table area open for you to move around under the table and still show off the subway as that beachfront is the main view of the city. You could also make that front more “permanent” with fun underground dioramas under the subway, floor to table. Love your progress as always, and I know whatever you decide will look great!

Honestly do people not listen - you explained the reason for the depth of the underground train in your previous blog! I like the idea of a lower railway down the center of the city bc then you could do two loops. One for a subway under the "city side" and another more freight train over on the "country side". Ships could come in the port loaded with grain, coal, or tanker ships loaded with fuel and be unloaded onto an underground freight train. Also mines could be under the mountains of the winter village and the cargo train could be loaded with Rock or sand or gems that the Power Miners are harvesting!!! I think that would provide for more story telling. I can see a trans tube when the train goes under the ocean and fish, sharks and other see life swimming around the tube or even some curious scuba divers lol.

Really nice update and addressing concerns. The nature of model railroading even in lego means that sometimes you make do with what you have. It has to be a loop and that means going under sections where typically you wouldn't see a subway. I think your explanations were spot on and that your planning for future builds is great, especially with the baseplate idea so that you can make a rockface for the train tunnels or tiled stations. Lots of possibilities and I hope the downtown core has unique stations for minifigures and storytelling.

The key issue with the train grade will deal with the bracing under the table. The grade would need to be steep enough to get under a brace within a table width, or cut the bracing which would weaken the table.
