Underground Street Racers (Smoke Show: EP1)

In the first episode of Smoke Show (watch episode 2 here: bit.ly/2rlkFC3), VICE follows a group of organized street racers in the suburbs of Toronto.
Instead of racing on closed tracks like most in the local car community, these underground racers spark controversy by choosing to race illegally in the maze of industrial roads around the airport because commercial flight paths make it impossible for police helicopters to fly.

Here where I live Alit of guys would go to a road behind Walmart and one night the cops blocked us in but instead of arresting people and taking our cars, they shut down the road (which wasn't used anyway) and let us race. Now every Friday night there's cops there in both ends and people racing. Last week we got one of the cop cars to race a civic AND HE WON. it's the coolest shit to ever happen. the local law enforcement around my area pays for a "Bring it to the track" Night every Wednesday at the track I work at, and over the past 4 years they've been doing it, there has been a significant difference in racing related deaths and accidents. no it won't. 1. The convenience of blipping on a highway makes it hard to put together a race for a drag strip 2. drag strips don't usually have roll starts, these are normal guys nobody wants to replace a 5k transmission for racing from a dig 3. Drag strips aren't open 24/7

Totally agree. A proper race track or dragstrip would make all the difference. Probably a bit more expensive then the police resources, but it saves lives. The only problem I have with street racing is the fact that innocent people could get hurt, that wont happen on a race track.

Though I would generally agree but there are a few problems with it all. Crashes can damage city and private property which obviously costs money, and the increased death rate of these individuals can cause a multitude of problems. Parents blame police and not them selves for allowing these guys to participate and potentially die. Due to legalities about age their points make sense from a bureaucratic standpoint. I love to race, it's one of the things that truly brings me joy and I understand the struggle of these dudes cause the nearest track to me is about 3 and a half hours away. I think the police should focus on finding and alternative solution to this problem instead of trying to stop something that will always exist.

If the journalist knew a lot about cars, the language used in the piece would appeal to an audience of car guys/girls only. The point of sending someone with little knowledge, is to illustrate the piece to a wider range audience who knows nothing about cars (9/10 viewers). I happen to agree with you btw, in that this sounds like kindergarten sh*t, but that's precisely the point. Dumbing down the topic is necessary for increased viewership.
