Street racing has long been popular in Miami with a variety of groups, some who gather at undisclosed locations off U.S. Highway 27 and others who opt for conspicuous city landmarks. However, the rise in fatal accidents and the risk of getting caught has driven some people to get off the streets and onto the track.
VICE travels to Miami to take a look inside the illegal street racing scene and the legal alternatives some drivers are turning to.

@AstronomyToday Yea, also power delivery is different. Him driving that 1000hp 2jzgte vs a corvette with 1000+hp are completely different. The power bands and torque are different. The is300 he owns would suck at a drag strip compared to a corvette with same horsepower. It's torque that really gets you going from a standstill, or awd like the gtr. Roll racing is different too.

On my bucket list is to run on the Nürburgring in C(x)ZR1. I have done it enough times virtually I could get a pretty good time. I love watching the Corvettes crush the GT3RS's. I would prefer a modified C5 ZR1 since that is what I'm used to. We have all these great highways here in the US, but we cant have an autobahn because there are so many stupid drivers. We have morons driving in the fast lane at 65 mph, and wont move over because they are doing the speed limit. They missed the part in the driving test where it says the left lane is not for camping, it's for passing. Then they have the nerve to flip you off for passing them!

Okay this is going to be kind of long but bear with me, the Miami / South Florida street scene is a very different reality than what is portrayed in this video. The video covers a piece of it, the want to move racers over to the track, but the reality is that the scene is extremely dynamic. First off, street racing is big, but not so much Miami, at least not for money. Most weekends, they are warehouse takeovers where hundreds of cars do donuts and drift, not so much speed. Also, its not so much a "running from the cops" environment, we are usually just told to leave and we do so. Secondly, the racing isnt all 100k cars, but a massive mix of "built" and "bought" cars. Theres something for everyone.

I remember, I'm an old woman, when street racing was made up of or black and brown some white men that worked minimum wage jobs and saved up their money to go buy a Honda and Frankenstein the s*** out of it. They didn't collect Ferraris or live in mansions. They live in some of the most unforgiving parts of the United States. But they had a special talent 4 turning the ordinary into extraordinary. And this video. The kind of elitist to me. It didn't have that real street car racing feel to it. And I'm not really impress. But it was pretty to look at.

I love how no one has addressed the issue with track racing. 1. You sign a release / waiver - this is so you can't sue the track, file an insurance claim, etc. So let's say you put it into the wall or worse, the guy next to you looses control and takes you both out, totaling your car and worse your in bad shape and need a hospital and surgery. Well remember that form? Your insurance is going to DENY your claim, for personal and vehicular coverage. So you will get stuck with a huge medical bill from the hospital, you will also have a wrecked car which you are responsible for fixing (Out of your pocket) and the tow truck company is going to need payment which was not covered by insurance either. Let's say you were drag racing on a public highway, you also were high on heroine and had open bottles of liqour in the backseat you were drinking from. If you were to wreck your car into a parked police cruiser, your insurance would cover the repairs of your vehicle, the rental for a enterprise vehicle, your medical expenses, and they might even replace your liquor which was damaged and or lost in the accident as well. (yes your rates will increase, yes you may goto jail, but you didn't have to pay 💰 out of pocket, declare bankruptcy, or commit suicide to get out from under a mountain of debt (vehicular loan and medical expenses) along with the cost of a new or repaired police cruiser. Kinda fucked up but street racing at the track is kinda dangerous and risky. Like really risky.

There are a ton of crews in South Florida that have the crazy illegal meets with all of the "cool" stuff -- burnouts, donuts, street racing, 2-stepping, constant hooning, etc. -- they have large followings and even block off intersections and busy highways just to have the road for themselves to do stupid shit. Car clubs like mine just avoid those clubs and we're trying to promote a positive car community culture. A lot of people down here in Miami love their cars and don't want heavy car restrictions like in California. See, in my club, we're a family. We help each other out, we share our passion for cars no matter what you drive. Built or bought? Not a problem! We have an interest and passion for cars but we respect the community so we like to do things legally. For our Bi-monthly meets ( @CorsaClubAmerica on IG), we talk with the location and have permission to be there. We don't do burnouts, donuts, or any crazy dumb shit. We let out all the crazy antics when we go to Fast Lane Fridays at the Homestead Miami Speedway. We get together as a family and have BBQs at the park, collect backpacks to give them away to families in need, etc. We try and give back to the community and partner up with like-minded clubs to push this positive car community era where anyone is welcome no matter what you drive, as long as you respect the community. Hopefully, we can start a new era of positive car club culture, where you don't get shunned if you choose to leave a club, switch clubs, not street race, etc. We're here to earn respect from the community while still having a good time.

Depending on the location, those guys put the lives of the people retrieving their bodies at risk too, but you’ve got a point. Miami/ south Florida is well known for car accidents. You can pass by three of them just on the way to the local Publix. Besides, they didn’t even mention homestead speedway. They host days you can race there as well. That’s where NASCAR wraps up, so idk why they’re acting as if there’s only one legal track option. They also didn’t mention a ton of other more secluded streets, but that’s probably on purpose.

Well shot, but what was the subject matter? -People die racing -fast cars on us27, nice job burning the spot even more than it was before -going to a track, oh wow there's an event -track is too far from Miami Resolution/conclusion: nothing Also basically no lower end well-built cars which are what most of the hardcore racers drive, just a bunch of exotic "package" car guys. I have been hit twice by street racers on my bicycle. Both times they went through a red light and hit me. It's not that I have pure hatred for them for no reason. I hope they get their cars crushed and prison time. That's actually kinda funny because some police when they are off duty are deep in the racing scene and it's not going anywhere regardless of what I don't like. Take it to the track. As a car enthusiast that's where cars should be racing not on public roads.

@Pretty fly for a WiFi Saving up for a TVR or a Panoz. I may go with a classic car instead and buy a Triumph Spitfire or an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce those little 4 cylinder sports cars. I have been going up to Road America since I was two years old. How many 6-year olds back in the 90s knew what the hell a McLaren F1 was? I got to sit in a Number 2 Gulf McLaren F1 at age 6. That's awesome. Being able to sit in GTP racecars is awesome. I got to sit in the Herdez C.A.R.T. car as a kid. I got to sit in a Group B Lanica Stratos. I got to sit I a Ferrari race car that there are only three in world. I got to take a ride in an original rare hardtop Cobra that car alone is worth millions. There are plenty of kit cars like it but an original is pretty impressive. I love cars it's just enjoyable to see the reactions of people you are driving by. When you get to the Track and you want to do a few hot laps do it there. There are safety nets, sand traps, tire traps and concrete barriers. You don't have much of that when a deer jumps out in front of you going 150 on the streets. Deer can't jump over a 30 foot fence. I understand that some people argue otherwise but just disagree I think wether you can drive fast or not I want people to keep it on the track.
