Just look at that meter! A Zone 1 - Zone 1 single is £2.70 for an Adult off Peak, I can't imagine paying £15 to save (or more likely lose) several minutes. Add to that the fact that I wouldn't get to ride the tube (I like the tube) Also, note about air con, the Subsurface lines (Met, H&C, Circle and District) have air con, as well as the Overground, Elizabeth line (not part of the tube), trams and many national rail services.
@speedstyle.2 ай бұрын
The Piccadilly line is getting air con from 2025, then Bakerloo and Central tbd. The tunnel temperature isn't that closely tied to weather though: it varies around 20-27 C while the seasonal average is 8-23 C. Which is pretty hot, especially at peak times when you add thousands of people, but it's the heat absorbed from 100 years of trains, moreso than whether it's sunny that day

I frequently do the equivalent to the Oxford Street tube trip a lot in Hamburg when I've got time to kill. Walk all the way down the main shopping street, then go back via the underground. At my slightly rude walking speed, that's almost exactly 20 minutes.

Really great video. Great perspective on stuff and showing how great our transport system really is
@BrockMak2 ай бұрын
In Hong Kong, however: I was taught from a young age to never bother to take the underground from Yau Ma Tei Station to Sham Shui Po Station, a section of Tsuen Wan Line in MTR. Even within this section: Just walk overground from Mong Kok Station to Prince Edward Station due to its short distance from station to station. It's even quicker than getting there on a moped, and that's even disregarding that the train tops out at 80 kph. Reason isn't just for exercise and to save money, but it's the same reason I avoid the shortcut on motorway to get home: Because I have more points to navigate overground. Case in point: Street View pictures of Google Maps don't update as frequently. I look at the Goodge St Station along Tottenham Ct Rd in Street View, the first picture is from 2022, but as you head towards Chenies St, the picture time-warped to 2008!

I think for the car travel, you shouldve taken a set number of trips from Point A to Point B, then divide that to get an average time. Would be a fair comparison given The Tube has set times for trains.

The car is flexible in the routing but heavily affected by the environment. The tube is rigid with is routes but less affected. Exceptional cases like broken train or events that block a series of roads can definitely alter the results.

Tom, great video. I mean, as train lines go, the Liz Line is gold standard so you’ll never beat it on speed. However, as you say, it’s not always A to B, so taxis will always be here. Like you say, suitcases, hot weather, multiple people - taxi wins on convenience. And I love seeing a London from a taxi (or a bus 😮).

To be honest I'm not at all surprised the tube wins! Even with the walking and the waiting, having a direct path with little to no obstructions is a massive advantage. The taxi could easily be much faster depending on the conditions, but that really can change by the minute. I feel like for an individual or couple of people, the tube will most always be faster and cheaper, and for those people the taxi is a nice luxury if you really don't want to walk or wait around. For bigger groups or disabled people the taxi makes perfect sense over the tube! No doubt there's a place for both to me even if it looks good for the tube here (and I generally prefer it myself).
@matt_1221_hk2 ай бұрын
I think the coach parking is the consequence of the low trees - the entire lower bit of Kingsway's nearside lane is completely unsuitable for double deckers hence the bus lane giving up (it's a real pain for bus passengers too). Even on the upper bit where buses do run on the nearside lane with the bus lane there have been a couple of pretty scary accidents over the years involving trees.

I am 'able bodied' but recently had the pleasure of dragging luggage from Heathrow tube to Victoria when there was part suspensions requiring changing lines etc. I had to walk far between multiple different elevators within each tube station and also against the flow of pedestrian traffic due to location of the lifts. I was in London earlier this year, travelling from abroad. We frequently did take the taxi, especially when going shopping, but the main downside of it, to me, is the price. Sure, its comfort level beats that of the Tube or the buses easily, and it was a great experience, but at some point you just want to get there without breaking the bank. That being said, any of the available options for travel in London are still cheaper (and more convenient) than those I've got at home, so no complaints. I'll still take the taxi the next time I'm in London, but only when it makes sense for me to do so.

For me it all depends on what the journey is for. If on my own and just travelling through to somewhere, generally use the tube. Simple no change journeys where I know the traffic will kill the road jounry, tube. But, if I have luggage, if in the middle of summer and oppressively hot, if going somewhere nice (say for a meal) and want no fuss non sweaty journey, or no stress late night journeys, I will choose cab.
@rosso20172 ай бұрын
These results don’t surprise me at all. Speed is not one of the reasons I choose a taxi over the underground. Unless there are delays, then it’s likely to be faster. Yes there can be delays, but there can also be delays by taxi. The reasons I choose a taxi are convenience and comfort as an individual traveller - both of which are unmatched when compared to the tube. Add into that if you’re travelling as a group- then it makes even more sense!

I think the tube is almost always quicker in the day, as an able-bodied person without much to carry, but maybe if you tried to do this with a disability, or lots of luggage, or early in the morning when the tube hasn't started or isn't as frequent, there might be more of an objective case for taxis.

I don't live in London, but in Stockholm, Sweden. For me the biggest plus with train and busses is that you know the cost. You just buy a card for the equivalent of 75 pound each month and you can travel all of Stockholm. And you don't have to think anymore about the cost that month. It's nice just travel and not thnik. What is the price for an equivalent card in London? The best thing with a Taxi is the experience and the service for me. I like just sitting in the taxi and chat and looking at the scenery.
@Name-iq8te2 ай бұрын
the equivalent pass is the travelcard. this is £164 a month for zones 1-2 but a lot of people get discounts. i, for one, get half price. a lot of people just pay-as-you-go, though. it's easier and cheaper.
@tomgreen6042 ай бұрын
In London it’s fairly pricier and depends on how far you need to go. A central London only travelcard costs £164 a month and increases gradually up to £427.40 if you want to cover the entire tube map. People buy the pass needed for their journey though so it wouldn’t reach that (unless you live in the outskirts of London).

Tom, the taxi fare for people who can afford to get them, it's like to them the cost of the underground or bus for the people who can't afford to get a taxi or else a company is picking up the tab for the fare. It's like the same as the people who can afford to get parking tickets then to find a paid for bay or pay and display. I know some people might say in the comments with the price of parking in London it's probably cheaper to get a parking ticket as a joke, but there is a real divide in this country between rich and poor that seems to be getting worse by the quarterly year.

Regarding Kingsway coach parking. During the week coaches can only park off peak. I e up to 4 pm and after 7 pm. Coach parking in London is at a premium . The Kingsway is used for Covent garden during the day and the West end theatres at night. It is also ridiculously expensive. Until that useless included of a major gets his finger out of his arse and stops closing coach parking ( park lane and the embankment reduced the bays). Then London streets will continue to get blocked with illegally parked coaches and other vehicles.

Agree - this is a station to station journey, so the passenger is a rail user. From concourse to concourse - you have to walk outside and find the taxis (and maybe wait for one to arrive), which is the comparison of the walk down to the tube platform (and maybe wait for one to arrive).
