Undergrounding of Sepolia| One of the largest railway projects under way
Work on the undergrounding of the railway corridor in Sepolia, which will transform the district of Athens, continues at an intensive pace.
The project concerns the construction of a quadruple railway corridor, with a total length of 2.36 km, of which approximately 1.33 km will be fully underground. With its completion, the capacity and dynamics of the railway network will increase dramatically.
The project starts from the exit of Athens Railway Station to Thessaloniki (XTH 10+821) and ends at Treis Gefyres (XTH 13+180) in the Sepolion area of the Municipality of Athens, where it meets the new quadruple railway corridor.
The eastern corridor will serve the movement of suburban trains, while the western one will serve the movement of long-distance trains.
According to ERGOSE, this is a particularly technically demanding project, as the maximum depth of the tunnel will be 19 meters below the ground. The tunnel will start from Sepolion Street and end at Siokou Street with Agios Meletiou Street in between. Special support has been provided in the section that meets Metro line 2 in the Sepolia - Attiki section.
The tunnel includes 4 lines and during construction the existing double line will be reduced to a single line in order to build the eastern part of the tunnel. The ground line will be removed and then the construction of the western part of the tunnel will begin.
The appearance of Sepolia will radically change once the new railway tunnel under construction in the area, which is currently characterized as degraded, is completed.
The project will make a decisive contribution to the aesthetic upgrading of the area, mainly due to the substantial consolidation of the entire stretch of the road which until today is separated by the railway "dam" and the performance in the neighborhood of a central island with trees, bushes and free recreational areas .
After the end of the undergrounding, the communication of 9 vertical streets, which are currently interrupted due to the above-ground railway corridor, will be restored (Sepolion Street, Sozopoleos Street, Stenimachou Street, Amvrakia Street, Rhodes Street, Maniakiou Street, Anastasiou Damvergi Street, Siokou Street). It is also planned to shape the landscape by covering the technical area with greenery (trees, bushes) and creating free recreational areas.
At the same time, it will also upgrade the operation of the country's railway network. This is because the quadruple runway will offer the necessary capacity to increase the number of routes.
It is being implemented by the Intrakat - Rail Projects consortium, which was awarded in late 2018, and is expected to be ready in late 2025 or early 2026.
It is noted that the project was included in the Olympic projects and was supposed to be completed in 2004, but for various reasons it was extended.
The object of the project in brief
The undergrounding technique - Cover & Cut technique (top-down) consisting of 47 individual techniques that are constructed in two 2 phases (West - East Corridor).
-The temporary hydraulic works
-The permanent hydraulic works (sewage-drainage tunnel, pantoroic network overflows & rain and dirt networks)
-The mechanical installations of the underground technician and the pumping stations for the drainage of the tunnel's rainwater.
The service buildings (IT facilities).
-The construction of two new pedestrian overpasses.
-The construction of the infrastructure of the railway line.
The restoration of the lateral and vertical road network.
-Green projects and landscape restoration.
