I loved Kajillionaire and was so excited when it came out. It’s nice to see a quirky movie with lesbians as the main characters but not necessarily the main plot of the movie. I hope more movie genres will do the same.

@Gwen33442 жыл бұрын
Evelyn, no need to apologize, even in jest, for defending Ammonite; it may not be the most entertaining film (the story was a bit rushed despite the plot moving at snail's pace; the characters were only mildly interesting; the ending was a cop out), but I (inexplicably) enjoyed the movie. Have seen only a handful of Kate Winslet movies. She has been excellent in revealing the inner landscape of her characters. Come to think of it, I think it was mostly the acting I responded to in Ammonite. And yeah, the lesbian period drama has been way overdone! (FWIW: Enjoyed Ammonite far more than Portrait of a Lady on Fire.) As for the rest: at some point early on, I checked out on Kajillionaire. Don't remember why it didn't hold my attention; perhaps it didn't meet my quirkiness threshold. I'm curious enough now, though, to give it another try. I watched Secrets, but can't remember the ending. TubiTV, here I come. Can You Ever Forgive Me? has been on the watch list for a while. Need to get to it. Love Melissa McCarthy, one of those people who is just born funny (though I know this movie is more dramedy). Benedetta is a definite No! As much as I love critiques of religion, the seeming unrelenting misery of this story and dreariness of the setting overwhelms any interest in watching. As always, enjoyed the video. Thanks for your efforts, and for making me laugh. I really need to find that cat GIF!

Thanks for this, I see it in some other comments but putting in some added 🌈❤️ for Vita and Virginia. “Orlando” changed my life and getting a film about it was 🥰. “Snapshots” was good as well. Sorry if you have covered that on another vid, a little heartbreaking of course but good. “The Secrets” I discovered on Tubi and really liked it. Also a little heartbreaking, but you’re right, if I am going to watch a lesbian film around Orthodox Judaism, it is hard to not always watch Disobedience. I also agree on Ammonite. “Portrait” became my all time favorite film(still is) and I will watch it 4 times before Ammonite, but that said, there is a cuteness to how Saoirse falls for Kate and breaks down her walls that I never tire of. I am glad they all exist. ✌️🌈! - will check out Kajillionaire-

As a fellow fan of Ammonite, I loved your defense of it! I do understand why it's not everybody's cup of tea, and that's totally fine. We all have our preferences. And for me, Ammonite is right in all the right ways. It's subtle, sensual, nuanced and thoughtful. There's so much going on with character dynamics; within, without, in between, things that are said, things that are NOT said. It's just so fascinating and I love it so much. And that's why, I feel I can trust your taste. So I'll be putting every other movie mentioned here into the top of my watch list. Thanks Evelyn!

I loved your list. Only one film I have not seen, Benedetta, and I put that one on hold because I needed new glasses (my old eyes were having issues reading subtitles) and wanted to wait until that happened, then, well, I rarley watch Hulu and the movie slipped my mind. Thanks for reminding me, I have new glasses, so will be watching that asap (I am really into anything that shows the "church" being, well...evil...always had an issue with that orginization, then I came out and my parents joined the "church"...so, hum) The Secrets, I watched...slowly, because I watched before new glasses, and I had to sit close to the tv. I give that film two thumbs up. I do love to watch period movies with a bit of religious homophoba/sexism/bigotry! I liked Kajilliaire...I have seen my fair share fo "artsy" slebian flicks, and I can wade through the weird and see the story, and I liked the story and the loved the couple! I am also a big fan of Richard Jenkins. The man is in EVERYTHING and he is always amazing. I think I had my expentations too high for Amnonite, I watch a lot of British films and know many peroid movies are a little slow...I think it is work watching because both leading ladies are great...but I think the pace could have picked up a bit, but I know what they were going for...we were to feel the dark and dreariness of Dorset, and women having to hide their relationship. The acting is great, if you can watch a story unfold slowly and deal with the dreariness of it, it is a very good film. I'm glad you added Can You Every Forgive Me to the list because I have not seen it reviewed/talked about much. Melissa McCarthy was so good. I expected it to be received so much better than it was. I definiantly recommend it...AND, it you are old like me, and watch a lot of indy films that don't stream...AND you still have a DVD subscription to Netflix, it is available to get via DVD.
@Gwen33442 жыл бұрын
@lisa s If you're using Netflix's DVD service then it's worth mentioning public libraries as an added resource. Of course, service levels depend on the library system, but I live in Florida where I think the average age is 90. Old technology is still very much a thing here. I've been pleased to find a good selection of independent films in my library's DVD collection. What they don't have, they will buy, if requested. Added bonus: the county I'm in, as most counties seem to be these days, is in a collective that shares services. Makes for even more bounty to be found. (BTW, I didn't know Netflix still had a DVD service. Very surprising.)

I loved Ammonite. For me, pretty much everything about it was great, except maybe the ambiguous ending. On the other hand, the ending WAS ambiguous, so it allowed me to have a happy head-canon interpretation even if the director possibly did not mean it that way. This is also one of the reasons why I liked it better than Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Then again, I am the person who likes period films, a slower pace, deep dive into characters, and a gloomy setting. So Ammonite was pretty much made for me. Additional bonus: thanks to it, I learned about Mary Anning who, to me, is a fascinating historical figure and an outstanding woman.
@bipbop31212 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like Ammonite better for that, ambiguity, too. I like period films, but I don't like them being an excuse for the death, with a man, unhappy ending tropes, instead of stories less told. Tell it the Bees being one of the most egregious ones, rewriting a happy ending to be sad, claiming realism instead of artistic hack tragedy porn, while shoe horning in an even more unrealistic thing for the time. There's nothing unrealistic about past society seeing two women living together as spinster friends or employer, employee. The lesbians hid in plain sight, just because they're too damn ignorant to get that is their own failing.
@annajung12342 жыл бұрын
@@bipbop3121Yes, always going for a tragic ending in period films does seem to be very much a conscious choice to strive for Oscar-baiting drama and not offend the homophobes too much rather than a strive for realism. Of course, it was mostly much more difficult for LGBTQ+ people in the past than it is now in most places. And there must have been plenty of romantic relationships meeting a sad ending. But then there is no way this was the only scenario ever happening. There were also plenty of possibilities to have a long-lasting or even life-long relationship in secret. Especially for two women. The fact we have so little historical information about lesbians and bi women in earlier historical periods, while they clearly existed then, could show that not much attention was paid to them. And that lack of attention would have made having a wlw relationship in secret easier. So when they go for historical fiction or speculation anyway, I would much rather the authors and creators looked for the ways everything could've worked out instead of the ways to make it as hopeless and tear-jerking as possible.

I love and hate The Secrets. I watch that movie if I want to feel pain :'D A bit like with Circumtance (but Circumtance is way more painful) or Lost & Delirious (which I will always love, one of the first ever queer movies I watched when I was young). But it is a good movie indeed. I kinda totally forgot about Kajillionaire, will put that right onto my list. I had the pleasure to watch Benedetta in a small cinema, alone. It was an interesting, weird and funny experience. I like Ammonite, I like the pacing and how hopeful it ends, and obviously the acting. Dunno why people dislike it.

I LOVED The Secrets and periodically try to remember the title again. I should just buy it. CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME I saw in the theater and was so pleased at what a well written and solidly cast film it was. All the leads were amazing. What a crazy true story at its' center. I loved the Tracy Chevalier book Ammonite was based on and was annoyed with the movie which really strayed from the book, But if the movie stands on its' own I should give it a shot. One of my ALL TIME favourites is "The Handmaiden". I don't want to spoil anything, but the the ending is very good and is DEFINITELY worth the long 2:25h. From the posters or the description it might not look lgbt but I assure you, that there are cute and quite a few heated scenes between the 2 main female characters. I would also recommend: "Love classified" - interesting story, cute, and a pretty happy ending "My first summer" - this one had an ambiguous ending, but was cute "Booksmart" - the main character is gay, but the story isn't really about that. There is one girls kissing scene tho. "Bloomington" - it's a story of a kinda weird relationship between a student and teacher. The ending wasnt good, if I remember correctly. "Happiest season" - it's cute, Christmasy, it has Kristen Stewart and a nice ending "D.E.B.S" - The concept is very unique and weird, but the ending and romance don't disappoint. @@rehammohammed007 I personally love both fingersmith and handmaiden stories to death, but to each their own. Keep looking, and if you find the best movie, let me know :D
