when used as a separate word, it is the conjugation of å være in the present tense. In English it would be is/are/am. when used as a suffix on a NOUN, -er (katter, kvinner, biler) it indicates a plural. An exception would be some often used nouns, like "menn." Another exception would be single-syllable neuter nouns. when used as a suffix on a VERB, -r (kjører, bestiller, spiller) it indicates the present tense. (it's -r, but commonly it will look like -er because many indefinite verbs end in e)
