I really hate to use "i" as index in maths as "i" can represent imaginary number, although it is common to use "i" as index in programming.

All it takes is some awareness to context to know that i is not representing the complex number here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using the same letter to represent different things under different contexts. We do that all the time with many other letters, as well as greek letters.
