I'm sure some would totally turn their nose up at this suggestion but for years here in Knoxville TN we have had a Goth dance night that offered absinthe on occasion and my go-to method is to just mix 2 shots with Sprite. It dilutes it and adds the sugar needed to make it taste right but removed all the pomp and pretense.

It’s a shame you didn’t get any expert in for this:/ there’s lots of great info they missed They did a good job with the video as a whole and didn’t spread any misinformation but (I think) missed out some interesting and important stuff 1. Pernod (the d is silent) or other “non absinthes” is called a pastiche 2. Long story short about why absinthe was banned. A chemical in it looked like a LSD and so it was banned. Years later a journalist was trying to find some info about the absinthe ban and tracked down the scientists who did the tests to show it looked like LSD and they told him their data was faked (for reasons I forget) and that just because 2 chemicals look the same doesn’t mean they are... that’s not how science works! 3. The water needs to be Ice cold 4. When it turns cloudy it’s called “Louching” 5. He was right to say not to burn the absinthe, if you ever see a bartender burning absinthe: leave the bar, they don’t know what they’re doing

Me and my best friend went to tenerife a couple of years back and had our first real experience with absinthe (have had som prior but that was some shitty cheap absinth that where available over here) and one in particular we bought had 80-85% and although it felt like drinking wild fire at first we really liked it and it was pretty much our favorite thing to drink over the week we where there (along with their heavenly localy made beer) most of the time we pretty much drank it from the bottle but we tried this mix woth brown sugar and water in a pub and it really made a difference and to be frank I miss that taste because you can't buy the same absinthe over here 😂😂 PS. The absinthe we drank was as green as they come!

During my first year of university, I had a bottle of absinthe that was almost entirely a party piece (I wasn't a big drinker at all). It came in a fancy bottle, and everyone enjoyed showing it to their friends for exactly the reasons to you mentioned, as well as to enjoy their colourful reactions to the taste. This bottle lived on a table along with the rest of the flat's alcohol, and one fateful night, while a party was in full swing I saw a very drunk girl pick up the bottle and uncork it. Being far too drunk to realise what it was, or notice the taste, she downed a good third of the bottle before I was able to reach her and wrestle it away from her. She managed to make it five steps before collapsing, vomiting and passing out, spectacularly hitting her head on the way down. I got rid of the bottle of absinthe very soon after that. Some powers were not meant for mortal men to meddle with, and the stupidity of drunks should never be underestimated XD

Pernod misses the deep charackter of Absinth. As an Absinthe drinker I feel sorry for you not getting to taste 100% Natural Chechz Absinth. Also it tastes rather sweet with moderately strong Anis notes than bitter.
@mariusdire

Except the Czech Republic had no history of Absinthe until very recently and most of that stuff if poorly macerated. If you want absinthe that's close to the belle epoche drink I'd recommend Vieux Pontarlier, they use herbs from the Pontarlier region of France (where the best absinthe came from during the Belle Epoche) and one of the original alembic stills.

Definitely! Go for swiss absinthe and please don't use a sugar cube... We usually drink it without in the region it's from. And one thing they should have done in the video is add some ice in the absinthe fountain.... Always go for nice and cold water (we used to have some bottles hidden close to the fountains for a quick absinthe in the region of Neuchatel). The Kübler is a good recommendation if you wanna go cheap but if you can, I would personnally recommend Absinthe Le Chat by Willy Bovet, which is one of my favourite

I second this. Czech Absinthe is nothing like the french, swiss (or even good german) stuff. It´s sweet and always has anise in it. "Real" Absinthe should have no sugar added to it - it´s actually a bitter - and it doesnt need to have anise (thats why some Absithes don´t get cloudy when you add cold water). You guys should really try a Pontarlier. @mariusdire is definitely right about this! And the swiss "la bleue"? Nothing for starters imho but if you are into Absinthe get one.

There are literally hundreds of different Absinthe recipes. Even if you stick to a single, strict recipe, different batches will vary in flavor, strength and color (as with any liqueur) depending on the weather, the growing seasons for the herbs, and even how long it's been in the bottle. It's as varied as wine, basically.

It was used to make bathtub laudanum more palatable and that is why peeps were tripping balls and it was made illegal. And, in case you're wondering why absinthe specifically was used, it was because of its very very strong anise (among others) flavor that worked very effectively to mask the putrid flavor of the black market laudanum. And yes, that stuff was taken orally, nobody was mainlining it in the 1800.

@@Shooteronly If you burn the sugar cube, you can give it a caramel, smoky flavor tint. To be honest though it does not usually break through the strong fennel and anise flavors. Also, depending on taste, a good dilution with water is about 50/50. Not to mention, you can pour the absinthe into the glass over the sugar cubes which enables them to be burned from the alcohol content before Ice cold water is added to gain the louche. It really makes very little difference in my opinion.

No offense to the makers of this video, but, I am with you 100%. I've been enjoying absinthe for several years. I'm no expert, but, sadly, this video should never have been made. I suppose the makers were just having a bit of fun. They completely miss the effects of Thujone. Even after several years, I've never had more than two absinthes in one evening, so I really don't know the effects of overindulging, and I am not interested in finding out. The effects of a moderate amount are actually quite subtle, but very different from other drinks. In fact, I find that the effects are overwhelmed if I drink some other alcoholic beverage, either before or after. Absinthe does put a person in a contemplative mood, and makes for very interesting conversation. The Thujone acts on GABA receptors. I think the burning of the sugar cube was mainly practiced in areas near the Czech Republic and has been observed to a limited extent elsewhere. The only Bohemian absinthe that I've had was Mata Hari, which tastes more like Compari than the French absinthes I've had, so maybe burning the cube works better with that flavor profile. I don't add sugar at all. For people who really want to know more about absinthe, check out a video called "History of Absinthe." You will understand a lot more than you got from this video.
@brandonofviolet

Alright buddy. Traditional absinthe is not consumed with a ignited sugar cube. That is a Czech Republic thing. In French and Swiss service you use one of these , an Absinthe Fountain, * www.frontgate.com/traditional-absinthe-collection/1198711?listIndex=0&offers_sku=162407&SourceCode=ZZ51120&intlShippingCtx=US%7CUSD&CATARGETID=120245420002086760&cadevice=m&gclid=CjwKCAiAiuTfBRAaEiwA4itUqMPUDpQvqTbrOQenycHpR0g2vy4jytThW9V-1udQ0OqJ_iRePIY2PxoCcv4QAvD_BwE * And slowly drip water on top of a sugar cube to help take the bitterness from the absinthe down and to also dilute it. Or you can just drink the absinthe straight up, or just dilute without any sugar cube if you like the bitterness. I’ve worked at a bar in Austin that does Absinthe service and has a decent selection of imported Absinthe. Idk what the man said that wasn’t true about Absinthe?

Pastis is not Absinth but both contain anise. Original Absinth (from the french jura mountains) is a very complex beverage in terms of ingredients and production. Its just that many producers use cheaper ingredients and alcohol to jump on that fashion for profit. Likewise it is not a "cocktail" for ordinary bars but requires a certain atmosphere/mood to experience its nature and complexity.

Sounds like you guys need to redo the eposode with someone that specializes in absinthe, instead of bar tender that got something close from the liquor store down the road. Disappointing, honestly. Clearly Brian was excited about the ceremony surrounding it, and didn't get ANY of that. Killer let down to the build up, to be honest. Very good video. I absolutely agree that presentation of a spirit contributes to its overall experience. I believe that some of the mythology surrounding absinthe is a little founded in science. Your body absorbs water and glucose (sugar water "loosh") almost instantly, these are binded with the alcohol which can contribute to an instant drunk effect! At least that's how it was explained to me... More of the presentation probably.
@Ezox2408
@Ezox2408 5 жыл бұрын
not really.... but yes your body absorbs the glucose rather quickly, and then the alcohol only takes a little longer than that. so the combination of a rise in blood sugar levels and a rise in blood alcohol content could help create this 'instant drunk' effect, but there are no protein pumps for both sugar and alcohol, and glucose is a fairly neutral molecule so wouldn't react with a stable one such as alcohol.

Well that was thoroughly disappointing, as well as misleading. I've seen this channel around a few times and they're normally fun, but this was just so mis-informative it actually pissed me off. • Absinthe _starts_ around 120proof (60%), but it's not uncommon (particularly in France/Czech) to see bottles as high as 180proof (90%). • Absinthe was, and still is, technically hallucinogenic. It contains higher (for food/drinks that is) than typical quantities of Thujone, a hallucinogenic convulsant. I'm honestly stunned your 'expert' dismissed the hallucinogenic aspect outright as a placebo effect given a) this is effortlessly google-able and b) it's the literal reason Absinthe was banned. They discovered it contained something that in large quantities made animals have seizures (not the alcohol) and assumed it must be wormwood oil, the key ingredient. • Pernod isn't Absinthe, just like WKD isn't Vodka, they have the same flavour that's it. • Wermut does not translate to 'wood of the worms'. That's some complete google-translate reverse-translate bullshit. Wormwood stems from Wermut, and no one knows where that word stems from. It's literally listed as a word 'of obscure origin' in etymology dictionaries. • Liqueur *isn't* just dilute Spirit. It's a separate drink _made from_ a Spirit (and is consequentially weaker because it has stuff in it.) that's why Spiced Rum is normally classed 'liqueur' instead of straight Rum; not because it's weaker, but because it's Rum mixed with X. • Absinthe, like Rum, is not 'clear' during production (excluding cheap mass-made brands that are coloured/flavoured after the fact; looking at you Captain Morgans). Absinthe isn't green like the stereotype *that* colouration is added, but natural Absinthe is a pondwater/muddy green colour. • The fire ritual is no more pointless pomp than the water ritual, and doesn't 'ruin the flavour'. Not least because in Czech where it's most popular the types of Absinthe used are typically stronger and far less sweet, specifically so that setting them alight doesn't burn off all the alcohol and so that caramelized sugar has a bigger impact on the drink. • I like how your bartender poo-poo'd the Fire ritual when he only had an easily shatterable brandy snifter instead of a sturdier glass, and when he was using non-absinthe grade Pernod which likely wouldn't even ignite anyway. Very convenient. As well as disappointing for Brian who was clearly all about the ritual and got none of that! The water ritual is called _louching_ and is still enjoyable to watch. It also wouldn't have taken much time at all to do properly despite Trevor's claims; _especially_ in a 15 minute video! Set up the drip feed and while it's doing it's thing for all of 90 seconds talk over the backstory. But then again, it would have needed actual Absinthe.
@BrandtHughes
@BrandtHughes 5 жыл бұрын
Just a quick note. Wermut obviously doesn't translate to "the wood of worms," that's why when it's posted on screen, it's in quotes and attributed to Brian. I thought it was obvious that I was communicating that as a joke, but clearly I missed the mark if you're taking it at face value. I can't speak towards your other points, so carry on.

Sidhe I had always heard it was grape farmers/wine makers who lobbied to outlaw it. The story goes there was a blight one year that lead to super low yields and thus higher prices for wine. The poorer wine drinkers couldn't afford it so they went to absinthe which was already somewhat popular amongst certain artsy groups, but when grape harvests returned to normal, they didn't go back to purchasing wine. In an effort to get their customers back, wine makers started a smear campaign against absinthe and had it made it illegal. Quite similar to the Hearst story about making cannabis illegal.
