Understanding Behavioral Challenges in Lewy Body Dementia

On Thursday, June 18 Lewy Body Dementia Association in collaboration with NASDA offered a free 1-hour webinar on “Understanding Behavioral Challenges in Lewy Body Dementia” featuring guest speaker, Glenn E. Smith, PhD, LP, professor of psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Dr. Smith explained the difference between Lewy body dementia (LBD), Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease and how LBD can affect a person’s behavior. Attendees will learn why a one-size-fits-all approach to behavioral changes in dementia does not work, as well as strategies that may be helpful with individuals with LBD.

I'm still here. I will be sharing this video with those people I consider important in my life. Having been diagnosed with LBD and having been a patient of Dr. Smith, and having talked with Ms. Taylor, it is with great enthusiasm that I thank both of you for this video. It is hard being so misunderstood now so early in the game, so it is scary to think how misunderstood it could be further into this disease. If I may add to this, take your time, in dealing with me. My processing time is not as fast as normal, or it is competing with other stimuli and therefore lost, please repeat as often as I need it. And validate, yes validate everything as I am struggling with what is real, as it is all real to me, especially the early waking minutes. There was something else important to me that I wanted to say, but, I can't remember what it was, as I became frustrated trying to maneuver past the sign in process to be able to leave a comment. Maybe it was thanks for the validation.

Thank you so much for this information, my husband has now been diagnose as having Lewy body/Parkinson/ dementia . He seems is very sensitive to drugs, he is on Riverstigmine 1.5mg x a dayand Mirtazapine 15mg x a day but he suffers with terrible anxiety and is crying and confused most of the time.The only drug that seems to controll his unbearable histeria is Lorazapam. He has a fixation on food like being his enemy and very distress when he has to eat or drink, very concerned as to what will happen to food and drink when he swallows it, which leads to very distressing behaviour around toileting, this is where the Lorazepam (.5mg - 2.mg a day) can take the edge off. Please can you pass on any suggestion on suitable meds. or help with this agonising behaviour which is causing so much stress to my husband and the family. Unfortunately we are not receiving much help with my husband. LBD doesn't seem to to understood here as there seems to be a lack of aware to this condition. Thank you.

Pierette Turner My husband has late stage PD and is now showing signs of dementia. He is paranoid at times and is hallucinating much more in the last few weeks. I am not sure if he has LBD or which came first.I am fortunate to have in place a strong support group consisting of government funding, family and friends. We live in Nova Scotia, Canada and have great health care. My heart goes out to you, I knowhow much you and your family anguish.
