I had missed the part about the tropical fish on my first viewing. One of the hurdles of Tyranid color schemes for me is that it seems difficult to achieve a good color harmony while also appearing natural (the exceptions being monochromatic and analogous.) But I had completely forgotten about tropical fish! So wildly contrasting color harmonies can exist naturally! I just needed to find better reference animals!

Hello! I love this video so much and it has helped my understanding of color theory both in mini painting as well as my other artwork, but i have a question. I've been painting my first army for a while now. It's necrons. The color scheme I've finally fallen in love with is White Black and Orange. The main color being white and orange being the color on all the glowy bits, with black or dark gray on the joints/inner frames. I've struggled with understanding how I should balance the colors there because I don't really know how to use white in this context. If i shaded the white with blue, would that make the white read as blue in this case? I ask because in this case white is the dominant color.
@WhatareyouPaintingnow5 ай бұрын
I would say the way to balance it is with the order of colours. So the best way to probably do things is take a picture of your Necron duder guys and then turn it black and white. Treat the orange as a shade of grey and see how it balances things out (this is what is meant by the order of colours). So instead of look at it through a colour lens look at it through a black and white lens and hopefully that will help. This should also help with using other colours to balance things look at them in black and white - Cal

Fantastic video and great for a colour theory begginer like me! I'm wondering, since silver/steel/gunmetal all just read as shades of grey, how would you go about making an impactful, non-monochromatic scheme for a majority "grey" model/army? Grey Knights, for instance.
@WhatareyouPaintingnow6 ай бұрын
I am very glad you found it useful. So when it comes to an army primarily made of shades remember the order of colours like Sunny said, and the second thing is depending on how it is done you may want to think about visual breakers like we talked about. Sometimes the 'official' colour scheme is not the best. I hope those tid bits helped - Cal

Good video ! But i don't understand the part with the flammer of tzeentch. If on the Tree thing the majority is Orange minority is green, wouldn't it be Blue majority, Purple minority and orange and yellow as accent ? I feel like the triangles are not in the good shape to represent the actual colors on the model.. Maybe i'm wrong but this part is hella confusing to me.

Okay I have a model that's an ogre sitting in a grass field. It's definitely primarily green. I was thinking to use a split complimentary scheme with purple and red, but a lot of the model is leather so necessarily brown. Brown as you explained is compound and not on the wheel. So what would you recommend here, keep the split complimentary and just ignore that it's got a lot of brown too? Or I was thinking to desaturate the brown, or maybe tint in red?
@WhatareyouPaintingnow6 ай бұрын
So there is two ways to treat brown as a neutral like a shade or as its own colour. I recommend to treat it as a neutral unless you are using it as it's own colour. Hope that helps - Cal
