I used to end up making masterwork meals and having a booze industry with stockpiles set up to put excess seeds into the cook pile. It was all booze and seed soup (with the organs of whatever we had happened to kill) - and I'd trade them all away every time there was a trader. It wad surprisingly effective early on, lots of value for not much work, and it keeps the food from spoiling. Plus it led to happy dwarves if they liked any ingredient at all, lol

~1:13:10 IIRC it used to be the case that Elves wouldn't accept (effectively) any metal items, because in order to make them the metal had to be smelted first, which ultimately involved burning wood (or what used to be wood, eg lignite or coal). I'm unsure if this has now been adjusted for natural metal or metal smelted using magma tho..
