@salfordsal is joined by special guest @RussMoney to discuss how to keep your dwarfs happy. Sal explains how experiences affect emotions and how emotions create memories, and how the memory mechanic works. Dwarfs have short term, long term and core memories and thoughts are transferred between them. Russ shows us his fortress and we realise that the old battle-hardness mechanic no longer works, then he fights a bronze collosus. Buy on Steam: bit.ly/2PY0P0w

I'm always fond of the "dwarf party" approach to cheering up a fort. Set up a mist generator above the tavern, prepare with a metric tonne of lavish meals and booze (as many types as you can muster) ,Fill it with fine statues and engravings and maybe artefacts. make sure your tavern has a lot of beds, then put a burrow over the tavern, and call the burrow in. Let them party as long as possible, but keep an eye in case one of the dwarves has a reason why this is making them sad (ie away from something). It wont cheer EVERYONE up , but it'll heavily push the bulk of the dwarves into the green. Doing it multiple time seems to work best (and now I know why!)

Mentally scarring dwarves into being emotionless and therefore never upset? That's a great idea! \*takes notes*

I remember years ago in older versions of df (back when tantrum spirals were much much worse), the forums had all kinds of twisted systems for toughening up dwarves. Some would lock up all the children into a room full of chickens or turkeys so that they would get pecked over and over. There was one that stuck in my memory called the "puppy fountain" that involved exposing kids to death and gore via a multi z-level drop and splat!

The way you describe bee stung dwarves reminds me of a playgrounds for really young kids. one kids gets a boo boo, and all of a sudden, ' another runs off to get a teacher, and some will stay with the hurt kid telling them 'its going to be ok' and 'your so brave' Its so sweet :D

About the waterfall here is what I have noticed in my 22 yo fort with 230 dwarfs I have so much stuff stored that I barely need to craft anything except for clothes and drinks. Meaning that most of my dwarfs are mainly hauling and cleaning but rarely doing any meaningful work. A lof of them have no family and can never satisfy that need. Most of them spar once a year or so, they have luxury rooms, dining room, guild, temples and a tavern with performers, they have a library with than 27 different books to read (130 total including copies) lavish meals, variety of alcohool, no vermin, calm environment and 4 mist generators. most are blissfully happy, 13 are green 6 are lime and 2 are yellow. In winter one of the mist generators stops working because the water freezes, immediately happiness drops and I can get people in orange. In spring it starts again and a month later or so I'm back to 2/3 yellow dwarfs at most. I checked one of the kids, he's 11 and most of his memories are legendary dining room, room like a palace and waterfall. the one that is most frequent is the waterfall it comes back every other month. So I think that when you cannot give your dwarfs enough meaningful jobs the mist generator is a lifesaver and having more than 1 is worth it. It also helps visitors if you have them and avoids brawls in the tavern for the most part.

1:54:30 this is bananas; I can't believe you can basically tell your squads "go improve yourselves. figure it out" I LOVE it

I'm pretty sure "prevents feeling everything including stress" MUST be wrong. Walking by a corpse or two and seeing a couple things die is enough to get everyone in your fort to the "feels nothing" level, but I only see them being unaffected by corpses as a consequence.

Text to speech is a great idea. You don't have to be a modder for this. You could caputure the screen with python or autohotkey, find the box based on color and size, cut out the content pipe it to tesseract (pic to text) and then feed it into a text to speech software (this part i've never done before). I would bind this to a certain key, else you get to hear what every dwarf you look at, has to see. I just started with the game (30ish hours) if i continue, i might build the toolchain for it.
