The problem you have with teaching digital, you have iso to help you compensate for exposure. Remember, as you increase iso, you are increasing light sensitivity. All the more need for light control, which he mentions. You are also creating noise. You can feather your key light when working close, using its edge which will open your shadows, helping to create a smoother transition from diffused highlight to diffused shadow. Remember, flash is a constent. Your shutter can also effect your shadow as well as the background. Ensure you have no extraneous light effecting your shot. Light control is key. If you dont have the luxury of distance, you can scrim light off the background for more control. Try this with film...now you have a learning curve. Digital has made things very easy in todays world of photography.
