I got my first black lab from a hunting friend of mine that owns my pups mom and her bloodlines were top Field Trial lines ! Westwind SuperChief and San Joachin Honcho ! He was hot and I sent him to a pro trainer and then went every weekend to assist him and learn how to handle not only him but a bunch of other gun dogs in training ! What a fabulous experience ! I trained several dogs after My Tar was used to breed ! The training was invaluable ! Watching 12 black pups chase and trail pheasant wings dragged across my land was amazing ! If your trainer allows you to help him with your pup please do it !

Thanks for all the great content you share - really appreciate it. I only have a Beagle, but it's inspiring to see you be out there, and work those gorgeous dogs of yours. In the end, that's what it's all about - enjoying the training journey with a high-drive dog that loves to learn, and work.

Excellent! I hunt every day in the fall, so for me a spring puppy so I can spend every day with pup. I had 8 labs, at age 65 this next spring pup will likely be my last lab. My current lab does not even have a junior hunter in her pedigree but she is now titled QA2 and has passed 4 Master Hunt tests, but I knew both parents and it was a repeat breeding. The biggest problem I've had is bad luck: put a deposit on a spring litter, female pup, number 2 on the list, there was only 1 female, so wait a year, put a deposit on a spring litter, number 3 on the list, there were only 2 females, so finally after 3 years got a spring female pup!

Can you provide some examples of dog breeds that would be good for a first time handler? I was looking to get a versatile dog for upland and rabbit hunting. Maybe a Bracco Italiano. Thanks for the advice, and the videos are great!

This was so helpful. My wife and I are going to be getting a golden retriever that I’m hoping will be a gun dog. It’ll be my first and after watching just one of your videos, I’m already a subscriber to your channel!

A lot of good information here. I agree 100% with you about the importance of the female in the breeding. She is half or better a part of the pup your going to get. Too many people these days are taking an unproven female (or basic titles), breeding it to a FC, HRCH, or MH dog and marketing it, as if the Stud could overcome any lacking's of the Dam. Something I will point out here in the states, is although a field trial dog from across the pond may be an ideal choice for a hunting dog, that is not so much the case for FC dogs here. Often they are just too high driven to spend long hours in a duck blind. It's my opinion you would have a much better chance with American breeding, if you looked for dogs from Grand (GRHRCH) dogs or MNH pairings. Those dogs would have the retrieving drive, but must show very good bid-ability and steadiness also. Last thing you didn't mention was health clearances, which should be at the top of any list; Hips, Eyes, DNA clearance issues.

A well trained pet dog vs a poor trained, well bred dog, which one wins?

All that was said was accurate, but a trainer can make or break a dog... make a good dog bad, a bad dog good. Not all dogs can be trained the same way, all the time... they each have a personality, a good trainer is one who understands that, and works on the dogs strong and weak points, accordingly. Don't get stuck with a style of training if it is not working for you... be flexible with your dogs personality until that animal is old enough to understand, you are Alpha... this is fun!! and I want to work for you!!!

This video wasn't about training. It was about potential train-ability. You are correct that, the quality of the trainer is reflected in the dog; but not all dogs are even close to even, as far as drive, birdiness, desire to retrieve and bid-ability. A lot of that is in there genes, a trainer just brings it out and polishes it. If you talk to great experienced trainers, they will tell you that some dogs just don't have what it takes to be good, much less Great!
