I'm going to try again. I've been trying for the last 10+ years unsuccessfully to find out what is wrong with me. Every single doctor and OBGYN's "fix" is hormonal birth control, which I can no longer take due to other health reasons... so then I'm basically told "just deal with it, this is your normal". I just want normal healthy periods, not drugs thrown at me 😭

I've had heavy bleeding since my 20s. Changed a super plus tampon every hour for two days. Had to change overnight pads 2-3 times a night. Flooded an airplane seat on a 2 hour flight because it took so long to deplane and a rush of blood came out when we landed. Obgyn never cared and never tested me for anemia until I had pelvic pain suddenly. Had a cervical polyp removed, and that's helped my bleeding a lot. Got anemia tested when I insisted and it's a wonder I was still upright from losing so much blood every month for years. I had so many advanced deficiency symptoms that I now realize were on the cusp of becoming a health emergency. Also had a uterine biopsy (negative) and a saline sonogram that showed two more polyps. They also found a giant fibroid outside of my uterus that explains why my menstrual disc kept flipping inside and why tampons had started hurting and why I feel pelvic pressure and have to pee a lot. I'm now only bleeding for 5 days. It's still heavy, but now the overnight pad usually lasts through the night, and I can go 2-3 hours between pad changes. It's wild how they just shrugged and didn't care or refer me for testing for so long. For years, they just tried to put me on BC without checking what was wrong. I guess reporting pain changes everything. 🙄

Thank you so much for this. I had to go to the hospital after constant fainting spells during my cycle and heavy bleeding. My Red blood cell count was 2.8. I was dying. That was in April, since then, I have been taking iron supplements and also herbs. I have changed my diet to mostly salads and fruit. I'm working on staying away from dairy but I love Pizza but health is wealth and I am thankful for this shift in better health. Thank you for taking the time out to inform us. I had no idea that my cycle was abnormal. It's been better since I have made these changes.

Thank you for your informative video. My bleeding sessions are torture. I have been bleeding so heavy off and on for the past 2 years that it's driving me crazy. I have been to a doctor who has done a menopausal screen blood test for me and it can back negative. He says nothing is wrong. To explain how bad it gets, I mess my clothes, I go through a pack (18 pads) of ALWAYS NIGHT PADS in 1day. My bathroom floor looks like a murder scene. When I get out of the shower, the blood is running down my thighs. I cannot stand for too long, I bleed excessively. My stomach feels like something is ripping itself apart inside. I'm in continuous discomfort. I feel tired and moody all the time. I eat beetroot and livers to help boost my blood. My blood count according to another test result is sitting at half it's level, 6. So I ask myself how can nothing be wrong when I am losing so much blood. My blood loss lasts a month, sometimes 3 months straight. I am in such distress because no one understands. I went to my GP, hoping he can help, he gave me a birth control to stop the bleeding, it did but it comes back again. My stomach looks like a rugby ball protruding out from it. It feels like something is hard and round at the tip of the point of my stomach, sometimes it hurts and sometimes it does not. I'm lost for words at this point. I live in South Africa, our health system is not the best. Doctors here don't have their patients best interest at heart. It's quite overwhelming, cause I feel alone and no help is arriving at time soon. 😢😔

I have to use the nighttime pads as normal ones if not im doubling up, have to use the largest tampons there are but still fill them in 30 min. She put me on birth control for my cramps the way id describe it is that its like a white hot jack hammer being turned on and jabbed in my overies. Ive had to miss work because i was in so much pain that i ended up getting fired because it wasn't a "good enough excuse". My periods can last two weeks or just one day. Hey. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this. I’m 35 now and have had all the struggles you are going through. I was diagnosed with endometriosis almost 2 years ago. I also had the ultrasound a couple of times before being diagnosed, and nothing showed. It was only after having a laparoscopy that they found moderate, encroaching on severe, endometriosis. Keep pushing and for sure get a laparoscopy if you suspect endometriosis. It’s really the only way they can diagnose. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re just weak and the pain is normal. I’ve had that from people most of my life and it caused a lot of deep set trauma that I’m working through now. Getting a diagnosis was almost a relief because people who had doubted me before finally were put in their place. Only you know what’s right and wrong in terms of your body and pain. As the video says if it’s affecting your every day life it’s not normal - Not even in the slightest. I really hope you get to the bottom of it ❤

From what I understand, heavier obese women menstruate more than skinny thin women. Two of my skinny gal pals only bleed 3 days a cycle. I'm larger than them and I bleed usually 7 days every cycle. Problem is that for the past year and a half now, I've bled every other week, so I'm having 26 menstrual cycles a year. That's too much! And now, I've been on my period 10 days already. Hormone imbalance, perimenopause, thyroid issues are probably the root causes. I can't wait to stop menstruating permanently. Menopause would be a Godsend.

Not always true. It can be very painful and something alot of us would love to get rid of the heaviness ,large clots or length.

A friend of me who is a bit overweight tells me she bleeds only 2-3 days, and only very little. I am quite skinny and bleed heavily for 7-8 days. I think anecdotal evidence is not going to be useful - we would need a statistical survey with a larger sample size and one that includes other factors as well, like diet etc., because correlation of factors does not automatically equal causation.

I have had the same experience as many people in the amount she showed for an entire cycle is what I have in the 1st day to 2 days. It's horrible even last night. I had to get up twice through the night and change as it was making a mess. I always double up on my products to ensure I don't have leakage. It's extremely painful and I can hardly do anything for 2 days. And I've had many children. I'm no stranger to pain, but it's excruciating. Sometimes most of the haven't gone to the doctors don't have a car at the moment and plenty of excuses I should no longer use. But every time I went in, they would suggest birth control or something to that effect. I can't do that as it causes too many complications from side effects. I did have when I was 18 years old. HP v that I had gotten from my mother at birth. I am 42 years old. They did not have much back then to help that and never seem to have a flare up. But I have not had a test done in over 10 years to check if everything is okay or not. Also, typically, they would do a pop smear and if that didn't show anything that's all that would be done I would love to have the many other tests run as well. I know that something is wrong. It literally scares my family as well. Thank you. I have subscribed because I was in tears. Feeling happy that I wasn't crazy and that this indeed was a problem is a problem.😢❤

I'd had heavy bleeding ever since high school (15-16), and even more now (32) after I got the Paragard IUD inserted in 2016-2017. One of the things my OB/GYN told me is that copper IUDs may cause heavier bleeding due to the copper in the IUD irritating the lining of the uterus. However, I think it's more likely that my heavier bleeding is caused by genetic reasons, as I have a family history of hypothyroidism and uterine fibroids. My mother had to have a total hysterectomy after uterine ablation to stem her heavy bleeding failed, and she developed a grapefruit-sized fibroid in her uterus in her mid-50s.

I know everyone has the morning period flood, but I woke up one morning wondering why my pants where wet. I think I had period underwear and a pad on, and as soon as I took off my pants it was like a DAM. I got in the shower and cleaned up, but that was insane and I took the first hour off school. Not sure if that’s classed as “heavy” but it was a lot, and the first time that happened to me. Also, I have diagnosed anemia (which I take pills for) so wondering if that has anything to do with the amount of blood? Ive fainted quite a few times because of my high white blood cell count from an infection on my toe (lol), and also because I have low iron. I’ve always known I’ve had a slightly heavier period than average, I really want to know if my periods are causing my anemia or at least contributing. Sorry this was long!

Little does she know I’m not really functioning well at all I feel Like the walking dead most days. She wants to give me an iud but I worry about perforation and I’ve been researching getting an ablation but apparently that can make it harder to diagnose uterine cancer if a woman develops that issue so I’m just unsure what to do at this point but I’m so depressed because my quality of life has been terrible for so long and this is the first doctor that has even listened to me. I cannot say how much i bleed but for past 8 years every month i bleed for 21 days😖😣 checked with gyno, she gave me some fibroid med before even confirming just to stop bleeding to scan. But it stopped by fluke, i didnt know it. i thought it worked. Did scan and results came no fibroids, everything clear so she gave me pills. I got these odd feeling like burning skin kina irritability and too sensitive to surrounding. So i stopped it on day 2 itself waited a week for this feeling to calm. But what that pills and med brought me a period that lasted almost 3 months...starting from 16th oct to 22nd dec, on 12th dec i was almost dying, i even took whole sheet of teranexamic acid which was suggested by GP in nov. Nothing worked. Except bed rest completed for a week. My husband took care of me for months, complete bed rest, period stopped on the 22nd dec. Took me 3 months to get back normal. These med will spoil health and bring the worst than cure. All gyno said no issue with my body and they do not know why i bleed like this. Now past a couple of year it goes for 2 weeks or 15 days.. if i bed rest from day 1 to 4..then it ends by 5th ..noticed that walking and bending, tidying house chores makes it worst...

I am a non-diabetic taking metFORMIN to become more insulin sensitive due to PCOS symptoms. I was having 6 week long menses with heavy bleeding. After taking metFORMIN for 2 months, I had a single "light" period, but now I am bleeding extremely heavy--heavier than before and there are so many clots. I see now this is severely abnormal bleeding. Do you think using metFORMIN could have influenced this current heavy cycle?

@madhumitachoudhary120 I continued to take the medication, and the excessive heavy bleeding slowed down significantly. Now it's been 3 weeks with extremely light spotting every other day. (Sorry if TMI, but let me explain "extremely light bleeding." Every other day or so, when I wipe myself after urinating, I would get light pink to red, clear, sticky discharge. I know it is weird that it is clear, but there it is, like clear vaginal lubrication with streaks of dark red or just a pink hue. Again, sorry if tmi!) did not change anything other than intentionally eating healthier (like salads everyday, whole grains, non startchy veggies, and fruit.) When I was bleeding for 6 weeks in a row, I never had more than 2 weeks with a break from the heavy flow, so right now, with 3 weeks of light spotting, it has been just fine with me. I'm scheduled to see an OBGYN at the end of march, and they will be doing an ultrasound on my ovaries to see if there are cysts or fibroids in my uterus. With the light bleeding, I haven't needed to use products at all. It is not a flow, it is just there when I wipe. Idk if that helps at all but that's been my experience since my last comment.

Dear Lora, could you make an analogue video for light menstrual flow? I am 35 and have periods that last 2.5-3 days max, never soaking a full pad, and my OB-GYN says it is normal and nothing to worry about, but everywhere I look this seems to be abnormally light. Would be great to know what can cause this and what tests would be useful. Thanks!
@drlorashahine Жыл бұрын
Thank you - that can be normal but if it’s a CHANGE for you after a uterine procedure or pregnancy then that could be worrisome for scarring. A uterine cavity evaluation like a HSG or saline sonogram and help make sure the uterine cavity is normal ❤️❤️❤️

Can you explain why ibuprofen would help with heavy periods? I thought as an NSAID, ibuprofen would make the bleeding worse, even if it’s not as severe as aspirin, Heparin, etc.

(i posted the same question on another video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXzKoZdth69lsK8) Hi Dr. I have a question about my cycle. I use oral birth control (have been for 10+ years) and I used to have my period on day 3 after I stopped, now I am having it at day 6 after I stop and the whole period couldn't fill up a pad, such a low flow.. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17, but my last exam showed I don't have it.. . I am planning on stopping the birth control in the next couple months.. Do you think I should reach out to a fertility DR?

I was in my 2 week wait when I started bleeding and it’s heavier than I have ever experienced. Last time I had my iud removed in 2020 I got pregnant first cycle so this time I thought the same thing would happen. I had my iud removed Jan 10. I tracked my cycle and should have ovulated on Jan 21. I started spotting on feb 1 and today it was extremely heavy. Soaked 3 tampons during day and still leaked. Over night I leaked which normally I never even have blood at all at night it’s always super light at night I’m the past. Just little freaked out.

Hi , I never had issues with my periods. Until recently, at first I thought my body was just changing and I was just experiencing the same things my mom did. But after going to the doctor I was told I had a small cyst and one small fibroid . The provider also said bc the fibroid is small I shouldn’t be be bleeding so much. I honestly feel like my body changed after taking the COVID vaccine . Myself and few of my co-workers share similar stories. Did anyone else experience this

lol ive had bleed through your tampon and pad every couple hours periods my whole life, and as long lasting as ten months with only a day or two of brown or no blood. but because i dont have any serious pain with them, my drs have repeatedly said well lets see how you feel in x amount of time or my favorite, if you lost the weight everything would fix itself. my husband was always confused why i sleep on towels, or changed my pants several times a day, until one period free day, i passed a clot shopping and it was like the damn shining elevator scene through swimsuit, leggings and jeans. but still the drs say im fine

I can soak an Ultra tampon and soak the back up pad edge to edge. Changing every hour. Changing at night more than one time. And it looks like chopped beef in the pad. Yuuuup Had to switch to adult diapers just to stop ruining my sheets/mattress. Tried the cup...it pressed up against my cervix and hurt like a bitch while in a seated position. I also filled that sucker in 4 hours...and I did not want to use the larger version of the cup,. Most period panties don't come in my size... I finally found a company that makes sizes of to 6x...but they run small. 6X is more like a 3X in my opinion.
