How Kendrick Lamar can help us understand instrumentals through his words, not by what it gives us, but how that takes away from our ability to imprint our own meaning on the song. I used the song Untitled 05 to make this analysis.

I've always thought that the instrumental of this song was not open for interpretation, but rather very clearly setting and paralleling the aggressive, dissonant atmosphere that Kendrick cements with his flow and lyrics, respectively. The nonstop crash cymbals that follow through the whole song maintain the anger, which Kendrick then reflects in his story. Thundercat's driving and tense bass lick is mirrored in Kendrick's up-front, yelling flow. The emotional turmoil Kendrick embodies in his lyrics is almost made palpable by the haunting horns, Anna Wise's vocals, and almost non-rhythmic piano. I think you really missed the masterpiece that is the relationship between the vocal and instrumental in this song.

Wow, I've always loved Untitled 05, but couldn't really put a finger on it. All of the layers on the instrumental really make the song. Some great analysis here Tyler, seriously appreciate this.

That is SO INSANE to me that when you hear that intro you think of a sunny day and a coffee shop. It’s so far away from what I picture. I’ve always pictured a more grey and gloomy day inside of a busy city. To me it doesn’t sound happy or peaceful, it sounds somber.

"Jazz sample" nope "On it's own, we may call to mind a friend, a sunny day. . ." you have a dark, sloshing, tense, throbbing sense of a sunny day. Yes, there's room for interpretation, but interpreting the sound of an explosion as a hummingbird feels like a failure to listen.

You imply too much that insturmental music is always background music. Some instrumental music is less busy because of the lack of vocals but some instrumental music is so busy that there's no room for vocals. Listen to Husker Du - Reoccurring Dreams or Nomeansno - Obsessed or Death Grips - Death Grips 2.0.

I think you’re laying out a two dimensional view of “instrumental vs. vocal” music that is way to polarizing. Yes, I agree with you when you say that instrumental music *can* say less then music with vocals.... “can” being the key word here. I, personally, believe that music with vocals isn’t “explicit”, it’s “direct”. An instrumental doesn’t suddenly gain explicit meaning simply because some vocals are applied on top of it. The vocals have their own, independent, meaning that is directly stated through language. Using language does nothing to dictate the meaning of the music behind it, it simply exists with it/compliments it/works against it. Sometimes the instrumental and the vocal do NOT compliment each other in a pleasing way and the result is two, conflicting, stories being told that sort of morph together. I do believe that music without vocals can tell a story/take the majority of listeners to the exact same place. Music intervals are processed by our brains by numerical fractions. The more dissonant the interval (2nds, 7ths, aug and perfect 4ths, dim 5ths) the more complicated the fraction, the more simple the interval (3rds, 5ths, 8vas, unisons, 6ths) the less complicated the fraction. Since our brains all process this intervalic information in the same way, it would be fair to say that they would also process a series of intervals in the same way, release dopamine at the same times, etc. Considering that the majority of the music that is produced today is melody-dominated homophony, we have limited exposure to more technically expressive forms of music such as polyphonic music and hybrids of polyphonic and homophonic music. Granted, it is more difficult to express meaning through a single Melody and texture in an instrumental piece, and it does take more conscious listening power since we aren’t being bombarded with our ear-grabbing language, but the results can’t be compared. Direct/verbal meaning and explicit/implicit/musical meaning are two separate categories.

The instrumental didn’t imply a coffee shop, or whatever you were talking about, it it’s the positive. It feels depressed, the feeling was implied after the previous song. There’s an art to this and you simply misunderstood it
@bourne8636

This song feels existential but in the most positive way. At the ending when the horns fade out almost aggressively it feels like it wants to continue to play but is stopped by the duration of the song. I feel like it’s a metaphor for death and how we will all have to face an end, even if we don’t want to.
@bourne8636
@bourne8636 4 ай бұрын
It’s also positive because we get a peace from the certainty of our end, nothing in life is certain but death, it’s a chaotic beat until it just ends.

For years, I have been listening to instrumentals far more than other people. In this video, you perfectly defined for me why I do that--I had never taken the time to understand this for myself. Untitled 05 by Kendrick Lamar is a great example of this. I listened to this song (most likely strongly for the instrumental) when I was experiencing a break up and the mood of the song harmonized with the struggle I was enduring. So much to the point that I still have trouble listening to this song because I associate it so much with such a bad time in my life. My favorite instrumentals to listen to are those of 9th Wonder. Highly underrated, 9th has a great way of constucting beats that fit any and every mood. Subscribed.

I like to think that vocals are just another instrument at the artists disposal, it just so happends to be good for telling a story, just like precussion is good for setting a beat. I do not agree with your statement that instrumnetals are better for "background music" because they "say less". Just as many others in this comment section, I can think of many instrumnetal songs that completely grab and hold on to my full attention and many songs with lyrics that I hardly notice are playing. Fundamentally I belive you overrate song lyrics power to grab the attention of the listener. Have a nice day.

also to add that ppl don't really pay much attention to the actual beats/tunes ; vocal songs get mainstream media attention cuz songs lyrics are much easier to digest and understand . It takes some skills to understand the musicality of classical songs. And......yeah I pretty much listen to a lot of classical music, I even took up violin, cuz I love classical music so much😃
@CreamGuy98
@CreamGuy98 5 жыл бұрын
I don't usually pay much attention to the lyrics, so I "construct my own meaning and message" for both instrumentals and tracks with vocals, in the latter case usually disregarding what the lyricist actually wanted to convey (unless it's something I like). It's the music that does the "talking", and a human voice is like another instrument in many ways, a part of the music, and not an obstacle to free interpretation and enjoyment of the music

the red orchestra OST is something I love listening to while studying or writing lab reports. While there are occasional vocals, they're often muted, and since I can't understand the Russian ones, they might as well be instruments. The mood they set is a mixture of creeping danger, melancholy and soft urgency that helps me concentrate without riling me up.

Thank you for this great lovely and quick breakdown as I had not really thought of it this way until now. I do love painting with lyrical music like Kendrick Lamar above, and I sometimes like to use the artist's perspective on the canvas I'm working with, but like what your video is pointing at, I lose my vision. That's when instrumentals come in to play, and I feel a little more free with what I'm seeing. Helps especially when doing abstract art. Here are some instrumental artists I've been listening to over the past week or so: - Perturbator - Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos - J Dilla - Nujabes - Bonobo Thanks again. -

I don’t understand why you put all these classical pieces as just « instrumentals », the majority of classical music has a meaning and a real story that’s exposed during the piece. Nowadays it is sometimes also the case but there aren’t poignant story and much depth to it. Think about composers like Prokofiev and his pieces during the Staline era that criticized his regime. He even composed an extremely sordid piece that was found after a suicide attempt. Even the classical music you recommended is entry level and isn’t the more interesting kind. The same goes for jazz, it isn’t just « instrumental ». Jazz back then had a big meaning, these were post slavery time and the greats weren’t just playing to pass time, they had a purpose.

Pink Floyd were the masters of mixing instrumentals with lyrical music, especially on their later concept albums like The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of The Moon--entire albums that smoothly shift back and forth between the two worlds giving deeper meaning to both and building into a whole that is somehow greater than the sum of its individual parts or tracks.

You could literally say thsi about any artist and still pose Kendrick as this exception that can help one understand what is gained and lost by adding vocals/lyrics to instrumentals. Hundreds of artists could fit that bill of an example, I don't think there's any need of specifying Kendrick so much as if he was this immaculate example when it's a musical concept that's so universal and applicable to SO MUCH music. Good video, however. I've discovered your channel recently and been digging it a lot. Keep creating good content.

I like the message concerning instrumentals, but the Kendrick track just felt like you were plugging whatever was on your mind at the time. Of course, that track is my all-time favorite track from Kendrick. Anyway, I feel like music can be hard to understand by itself. Context matters. For example, I didn't give a shit about jazz or blues music till I started digging and learning about what kind of lives those musicians were living. I had no idea that Charlie Parker lived and died addicted to heroin. I thought jazz was music for snotty rich people. But then I learned about tons of different musicians by reading and listening all alone. If I were in the streets and out all the time, then I probably would've never spent that time, and I'd probably see jazz as meaningless.

Exactly so many people think that jazz is for snotty rich people people barely move a muscle in jazz concerts. It's ridiculous.

I spend most my time listening to music and when i try to meditate or focus, It's always the vocals that get stuck in my head and sometimes it gets annoying

Hip hop producers like The Alchemist, J Dilla (RIP) , DJ Shadow all have great albums that are instrumental.. there are vocal samples on these albums but no artist rapping (tho they do also produce music with vocals - these instrumental albums are worth checking out.

Arctic Monkeys - Chun Li Spinning Bird Kick is the best Rock instrumental piece I've ever heard. I also like Mia & Sebastian's theme from La La Land. Oh, and Clair de Lune is a gorgeous song. There's the song Four Shots or absolutely anything else by the canadian band BadBadNotGood as well, quality contempo jazz over there. Loved the video, it made me think about a topic I overlook. This is the best kind of video. Even better than the ones that teach are the ones that make you think about something you know from a different point of view. Im going to take a look at those songs to dive deep into instrumentals, and I'm starting to think it will help me write! Really, this whole thing about building a scene in your head is juicy fiction-writing material.

Instrumentals lie very close to Techno in terms of implicit meaning. Techno is dance-instrumental! It's ambiguity helps people shape their own meaning of the sample-based rhythms. This is also the reason why most (uncommercialized) rave's dedicate the bulk of their budget to the sound systems, not the visuals. Great video, also consider setting up a Patreon? Would definitely pay for some extra exclusive content :)
