No, physical storage media is always in bytes. Bits refers to a stream-rate. Stream rates can also be converted to bites from bits by dividing by eight.

Finally somebody who clarifies the REAL value of the Internet speed. I always smile when I hear somebody in tv or in the radio advertising internet packages saying they have 75Megabytes per second. I'm like what? Thats wrong. Where I live, they have speeds up to the Gigabit/s. Can you imagine downloading 1 Gygabyte per second. You can download a movie (800mb) in an eight of a second. However, since I know that is not true, with a gigabit internet package it would take me 6.4 seconds to download. Still fast, but its actually 8 times slower.

3:43 it is said that a floppy is 1.4Mb. This is incorrect. You will have 1.44MB, which is 11.52Mb. In this video, semantics are very important as the distinction was made toward the beginning of the video.
@CuthbertNibbles8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Childs At 1:06 he pulls up a SD card, and says it's also in bits. This is almost always false. You probably already know this, but to any passerby, the bits vs bytes measurement isn't entirely marketing based. Telecommunications measure in bits because it's the logical format, how many times can we turn a signal on and off in one second. Storage logically uses bytes because that's what data is stored in, a hard drive doesn't count how many zeros and ones it holds, it counts how many bytes (clusters of 255 values including zero) it can hold, since data is stored as bytes.

thanks a whole heap! I now understand much more. But please tell me: I live on a sloping street which is the only access into the village. The slope is, say, 3km long and I live two thirds of the way down. The broadband connection site is at the top of that sloping street, so it is about 2km up the hill from me. From your analogy of pipes, I understand that there is a nice large, wide pipe up to the top of the hill. But that from the top of the hill down to my house, irrespective of whether I have fibre-optic or not, I am still relying only on the small pipe which feeds down the street to the village. So then all the information floods quickly from the broadband providers to the top of the hill but at that point dams up and is only released slowly through the small pipe which takes the info down to the individual houses!? If this is so, how will I benefit from fibre-optic?Your help is very much appreciated and I hope you can find the time to reply. John.

the skype video clarification was very helpful. thank you . QUESTION: now how does one try and get that service of uploading data at a faster speed or even match the same speed as what is advertised from the internet providers?
@RandWilson10 жыл бұрын
There usually isn't much you can do yourself to get your advertised speed. If you disconnect everything from your modem/router, and make sure your computer is plugged directly into your modem/router, with a wire (not wirelessly) and run a speed-test, and you arent getting your advertised speed (up or down), you have to call your internet provider and complain - and depending on how close you are to that advertised speed they may or may not do anything. If when plugged-in directly to your modem/router you get faster speeds than with "everything else" plugged in, then you have some troubleshooting/fixing to do - that troubleshooting is far beyond the scope of a comment on KZbin - but you could post your question(s) at GrownUpGeek.com for more help. If you want MORE speed, higher than your advertised speed, you have to call your provider and throw more money at them.

I'm trying to see if I should downsize from a 75Mbps to 25 Mbps with comcast. I do graphic design and maybe 5x a month I'll have a huge file to upload to my clients ftp or download one. Most of the other files are not that big. I use the adobe cc software and every now and again will watch netflix. I just am curious if I will experience any real significant difference in speed times. Or what do I look at when choosing the speed. I've read many views that say if you're not streaming movies or playing video games then 25 is great. Or get as much speed as you can afford. But I want to know why I would chose one over the other. Thx
@RandWilson8 жыл бұрын
+TheJanicetunes Changing from 75mb to 25mb will likely not affect your upload times much, if it all, but to know for sure you will have to find out what the upload speeds are for those packages since the 75mb and 25mb refer to the download speed. Knowing how much of a difference it will make boils down to simple math. If it takes you 5 minutes to download a file with your 75mb connection it would take roughly 3x longer with a 25mb connection. As for Netflix, it will do fine with much less than 25mb.

If ISP offers 30Mbps for 100 members and all 100 members are using 30Mbps does it cause congestion like pipe illustration in the video? Or it should not ? as every one is allotted separate speeds/bandwidth (30Mbps).

I'm looking at switching to a suddenlink cable internet instead of att uverse adsl. The issue is that they both have the same data limit of 250Gb(B?). I've never reached my data limit with att but suddenlink informed me that I'm likely to exceed that by playing over 4 hrs of games with Xbox or streaming 2 hours of Netflix a day. They're basically telling me that the faster my speeds are (18Mbs down, 1Mbs up with att. 50Mbs down, 5Mbs up with suddenlink) the more data will be used up even if I didn't change what I did on the Internet. Is it true that I'd use more data watching a 2hr. 1080p HD movie with faster internet vs slower internet speeds?! Can't wrap my head around this concept

If you have a download speed rate of 512KBps that is a bandwidth of 4mbps, does it mean you are downloading a data of 512KB every second?? I have been observing my network, and my download speed rate shown in my downloader is not equivalent to the actual being downloaded. My downloader may show a download speed of 300KBps, but the data downloaded in that second will be about 200KB.

Hi, thank you very much for your video. I understood a lot more about the internet. :) I have recently run an internet speed test on my computer and the results are Ping = 19ms, Download: 18.13 Mbps, Upload: 2.84 Mbps. How would you interpret these results? Is there a range of 'Good' or 'Bad' for each of the internet speed factors (i.e. Ping, Download and Upload)?
@enufots46215 жыл бұрын
In general, the faster the download & upload speed the better (bigger the number). Obviously, the lower the ping number is better because it is a measurement of how long in time it takes for a small packet to be sent and receive back. Under 100ms is okay. As for the download and upload speed, it's like asking if a Small size t-shirt is good or bad...which doesn't make sense. It's good if you're small and bad if you're a large person. So, 18.13Mbps download is good if you subscribes (paying for that level of service) to a 12Mbps service. It's bad if you paid for a 25Mbps service and only getting 18.13 Mbps. The same logic applies to the upload. Now, if you're asking if 18Mbps download speed is good enough for you or you & your family's needs. It depends! It's like asking if a 30gal garbage can is good enough for your family or should you get the larger 45 gal. garbage can. It depends on how much you need. If you're a single person (no family), in general the smallest 30gal can will do. If you have 4 or 5 members in the family, you'll most likely need a 45gal can. So, the same is with the level of service for internet access you buy. 18Mbps download for 4 people each watching a 2 hr. high def movie at the same time (each will take up around 4-5Mbps). Think about how many PC's and cell phone will be used at the same time as well. But don't over subscribe as it'll cost for that level of service and you might never need that extra level of bandwidth.

@RandWilson10 жыл бұрын
The key word in that offer is "up to" 3Mbps.. For your Roku 3Mbps is probably fine if you actually end up getting that speed.. and of course, the only way to find out is to buy it and try it. Is it a good deal? That depends.. to someone paying $50/mo for 1mbps down it's a great deal.. To someone paying $35/mo for 10/Mbps would say it's a horrible deal.. The question is, what other choices do you have where you live, and how much do those choices cost?

@RandWilson7 жыл бұрын
The "Ping" is the amount of time a small message (a 'ping') takes to get from your computer to the server you are communicating with. It is a measure of the time it takes to get from here, to there. The longer the ping-time the more lag or delay you might see when doing time-sensitive things like streaming video or playing online games. The lower the 'ping', the better.

Hi, Thank you for the video. I would like to ask one question related to internet speed. My internet provider says that my connection has a Bandwidth of 512 kbps and a Peering up to 10 mbps. Would you please explain what is "Peering" and what maximum downloading speed is possible from this connection?

Usually "peering" is the connection speed between your internet service provider and other internet service providers - generally does not have anything to do with your download speed. As mentioned in the video, there are two speeds that matter, your "upload" (from your computer) speed and your "download" (from the internet to your computer) speed that matter. "Bandwidth of 512k" is a useless term in deciding what your download speed is. You need to either call your internet company and ask what your download speed is or better yet, go to a website that tests your actual speed, like www.SpeedTest.Net to see what speeds you have.
