Understanding Opacity vs Transmission in Maya 2023

Hi Creators,
I've noticed that there is some confusion when it comes to the difference between transmission vs opacity. In this video tutorial, we cover the difference between these two attributes and how to implement them in Maya. It's a fun tutorial, so let's get started!

You are really helping me not only learn Maya, but UNDERSTAND Maya. something that is missing in most tutorials. Thank you. Now for the question... I used an image with lots of white and peacock, but could not get the shadows to look like the glass. In fact, I am not getting shadows at all. What could be the problem? (and yes, cast shadows is checked as is use ray trace shadows). I'm stumped.

BTW to anyone else that ever has a strange no shadow issue, I rebooted my computer and everything is back to normal.

Very interesting and useful demonstration. Two questions. First, can you create masks for objects without having to leave Maya (not going into Photoshop). Second, how do you create a stain glass map/material? ... and yes I want to see more. I am trying to reconstruct a very poly heavy spaceship from a detailed picture and wonder if I can make beam structures via masking blocks with maps as oppose to modeling them intricately. This would save on rendering (I think) and viewport "weight".

how do one get semi transparent values in alpha channel? I'm failing to achieve that. I want to render a flat glass surface and need alpha channel to behave normally so i change BG color in photoshop.

That's a good question. If you want it to be semi transparent, use grey colors. That will give you a variety of transparencies. I hope that helps!

If I connect black and white texture with opacity, should I change the color space to Raw or it should be sRGB?

This was very helpful, but I am running into another problem. I made foliage cards and rotated them like you would see in video games, but the issue is when I render I can see the back of the cards turning black when I didn't intend for them to do that. I've tried aiTwoSided, but that doesn't seem to work. Do you have any idea why that's happening?

Any image with white, the image will look more transparent. The darker the color, the darker the transmission. I hope that helps!

@@AcademicPhoenixPlus thank you for respond. Basically i only want to assign standard surface shader to nparticles. I also only want to render using maya hardware 2.0. 😭 nothing super fancy. But for some reason nparticles by default already have blin shader (i saw in outliner) and change or remove that shader doesn't do anything in viewport. Thanks.
