19:40 If I may add, many pre-heaters can also be serious energy hogs (especially convection types). The flatter ones (almost always IR) are usually very expensive. My organization requires them for almost every type of rework, because the equipment being serviced are very expensive mission-critical boards (priced from five to six-figures) and their PCB's are loaded with significant voltage, ground, and thermal planes. With that mentioned, I do think they have their place, however like you mentioned, I certainly agree that if one can successfully complete the job with less equipment, the better it will be. Just my .02.

I learned today that the ACPI Specification (The one that defines S0,S1,S2,S3,S4 and S5 power states) are dependant on each other. It's funny because I could sleep the machine, but it cannot turn on, which it's pointless, but since you stated it, simplifies a lot of the process.

Do you ever use acetone instead of isopropynol?
@kiddy19928 жыл бұрын
I might be wrong but i think he is using ethanol instead of IPA. And acetone might not be a good idea depending on wether on not there is anything on the board that dissolves in acetone. Be it writing or something component related. one of the things i remember from chemistry is that depending on the plastic you might desolve it. which would really suck if you'd just put on a connector
@MrocznyTechnik8 жыл бұрын
Once, however my wife hates my mouth smell after acetone, so I stick to isopropynol.
@brainndamage8 жыл бұрын
Acetone melts plastics, so it'll melt your connectors and some components, which is not a good idea. IPA or denaturated alcohol doesn't do this.
@eek93698 жыл бұрын
Jernej Jakob Not to say your're wrong but I've never come across a board with connectors that melt with acetone, they're normally some nylon/PP stufff. I just find it a more aggressive cleaner and use it for flux cleanup. then an IPA final flush. MrocznyTechnik If it's a fruity smell on your breath it's a sign of poisoning. At least it is with IPA

Apparently that IC ISL8009B has a built-in thermal protection. When the internal temperature reaches +160°C, the regulator is completely shutdown. As the temperature drops to +130°C, the ISL8009 resumes operation by stepping through a softstart-up.(A way to verify if the protection is working from this point of view ). Depends on version A,B,Z and so on . I think like you Louis the last tech, person or what was ,who tried to replace it, he heated up for to long time at to high temperature making it unusable , there is a temperature profile to solder the IC check the pdf file for detailed info tb493.pdf for who wants to get in the technical hole, without proper tools and knowledge ( feel ) and information it's very easy to damage the part for good. Cheers mate... i just saw the stag on your video, while "treating" myself with that too.

A Multimeter should never change its reading with low battery (maybe if the LOW BAT is showing on cheapies) and a Fluke it will definitely not change! You can try it could be interesting.
@pldaniels8 жыл бұрын
Really just needs recalibration. I have seen a few meters that will wobble a bit as the battery starts fading off but certainly more often than not it's just natural drift that coincides.
@TecKonstantin8 жыл бұрын
But not on a Fluke, on others that can happen. And if the Battery is low it will read often more because the reference is lower, it goes the other way ;).

Are all of these things relevant only for MAC's ? I do component level diagnostics at a computer shop, but we outsource board repairs to others that that take a lot of time to figure shit out so i'd rather do it myself
@bonbonpony6 жыл бұрын
Some of the details seem to be Mac related, but most of them are pretty common for all motherboards out there. E.g. I'm currently analyzing the schematics of some ACER motherboard and there are S0, S3 and S5 signals too, as well as switched-mode power supplies that generate those voltages and controller chips that tell the power supplies when to turn on/off. So I guess that most of the knowledge presented here is pretty general.

hey, thanks for this video, i learned a lot, i knew nothing before, and i trust that if i had schematics like yours for something broken, im 99% sure i could figure out the rest. looks a lot like programming, of which i have 12 years experience. i guess you could say i know its a lot like programming, but hard to say when youve never worked electronics like that. gunna try reviving a dead graphics card ive had for years sitting in a closet. ill lyk if it works when im done. its a simple fried capacitor and some damaged pcie pins. its a simple fix, and i can see what isnt working on the board. just might need a new capacitor.

Sir can you tell me how to find quickly the trace is open at a point but visually it is shorted.is there any technique to visualize the complete path of the the trace by applying voltage or current.
@pr0xZen3 жыл бұрын
You probably figured it out by now, but for future reference, in many types of board software (like for instance ZXWSoft), you can see not only what parts are electrically connected to each other, but the physical layout of the traces, together or by individual pcb layer one at a time. Then you start at a point where the trace is good, then work your way forwards testing ie. every 3-4 connection along the line (to speed up the process), until you find it broken. Then reverse and trace your probe points back again, this time test _every_ single point along the trace (because now you have narrowed it down to a much smaller group of points to test) until you find the signal is good again. Your break will be in between your last two test points. Now you can follow the physical trace layout in boardview/zxwsoft or similar software, and look for the damage to the trace, or a blown resistor, diode, filter, fuse etc. If the line faulty is open when it should not be (not shorted), with no components in between those last two probe points, suggesting a mechanical break in the trace - you can add a jumper between those points. Don't do this if there is supposed to be non-capacitor components between those two points though, then you will be making a dead short on the line that is not supposed to be shorted, and can cause significant damage to other components further along that line.

@@kindisc Well "everything else" should be _getting power._ There are still many other things that can go wrong, that do not significantly impact the power rails.
