My grandfather suffered decades from silicosis as he started working very young in a dusty black granite quarry. He had to fight tooth and claw for compensation due to poor work environment and lacking safety gear as the symptoms manifested long after he quit. Stay safe working.

I was exposed to silica dust in a shipyard from 06 to15. OSHA regs were not in effect then. Now I am having the exams prior to acceptance in a lung transplant program. The problem is since I was exposed before OSHA instituted stricter controls on exposure it was left up to the employer to self police. My exposure is treated as a workers comp. issue and since "defense contractors" have lawyers and money and more time than most workers do the cases die before they can even be heard. Until silica exposure is treated as strongly as asbestos exposure nothing will change and all the older exposure victims are left trying to get disability through social security. If we live that long.

I was sandblasting today, wore my P100 as usual but, today I noticed glitter dust inside the mask when I took it off. I'm not sure if I breathed it in or if it got in there when I set the mask down? Either way it's very unsettling, I'm not impressed that the sand bag just calls it "industrial sand", I didn't realize it was silica until looking into it today! be carful and know what your using before you use it!

This is absolutely heartbreaking. These men are being cut down before they are in the prime of their lives. Was your kitchen worth it? My kitchen is currently counterless. I saw a DIY video where the woman doing up her kitchen bought doors. I’m considering the option.

The Public is I'll of information on this and the responsible health work are like failing to meet their obligation. I normally find men trying to sharpen knives, pangas etc, others are just next to where glasses are cut and I wonder when people around are not even bothered with what the particles they inhale. Glass is not particularly dangerous. It can still scar your lungs, but it is amorphous silica, as opposed to crystalline silica. It's not carcinogenic.

@@nicomusic404 To respond, depends on type of cement, if your using slag as a strengthener (SERIOUSLY BAD TO BREATHE IN SLAG) etc... your looking at around 30-35% percentage silica roughly. Your type 2 is coarser then type 3 Portland, but is STILL dangerous. Smasonary has additives to it that can do some extra nasty things. Etc... I know cement chem.
