I wanted to use glass bottles with my son, but when my MIL would watch him she complained they were too heavy so she had to use the plastic ones. She does have RA, so I have to be understanding. People can only do what they can do. I primarily breastfed any way so, the total intake wasn’t that bad. I tried to drink out of glass or stainless steel whenever possible.

So glad this is actually being talked about. Microplastics were the first things I thought about. I’m pregnant with my first and I only have glass bottles. Never once did I consider getting her plastic. And especially when it comes to heating the bottles, my first thoughts were, “is it even safe to put a plastic bottle in a bottle warmer/bottle sterilizer?” Because I know heat makes plastic bottles shed more or something like that. The same reason why you shouldn’t drink from a plastic water bottle that’s been sitting in your car. Even with my colostrum collectors, I immediately went straight for the silicone vials and I’m steering clear of the plastic syringes.

Just sharing that if you have concerns about microplastics you shouldn’t use bottled water at all. During transport to retailers the bottles are sitting in hot trailers and warehouses.

I went down the microplastic rabbit hole with Baby 2. But then I realized my pump parts are plastic, and all my breast milk is going to be stored in a plastic bag, so, then it becomes a question of minimizing rather than eliminating. I got a nice response from the President of MayMom (a plastics engineer with a PhD from Duke) about why he prefers PP plastic to PPSU- in short, because (1) PPSU is patented and more expensive, (2) it still sheds microplastics, (3) the risks of PP plastics are fairly well known because it’s been around a long time whereas PPSU is newer so there could be risks we won’t know it til later. Then I realized that just about all plastic bottle makers recommend tossing them after 6 months anyhow, both PP and PPSU. like the Dr Brown Glass bottles because they dry quickly. They are sturdy, too. My daycare provider isn’t scared of glass. She’s old school.

I hand washed all of our baby bottles because I saw them literally melting in the dishwasher. The bottle neck would be slightly warped, just enough that the collars wouldn’t fit on properly anymore. I figured that was enough for me to realize that they don’t belong in the dishwasher. I didn’t even think about the micro plastics aspect.

I have another bottle option that I really enjoy that isn’t as expensive. Boon bottles. Everything the milk touches is silicone. Not as good as glass, but better than traditional plastic.

Even pay attention to sippy cups and putting them in the dishwasher…1.5-2hr cycles in immense heat. I wash mine by hand.

Agree with giving baby cold milk. I didnt even know about microplastic concern. I was just too sleep derived to mess with hot waters or warmer equipments 4 or 5 times a night. So cold milk it was and baby really didnt care.

We have left 1 bottle at room temp before first sleep. He drinks through that one then we have another bottle with pre measured formula and water bottle ready to be mixed. He is just fine with room temp milk. Also, breast milk is good for 8 hours- that’s a full night.

All of my babies do/did accept room-temp formula. We put formula powder in one of the little breastmilk bottles, and put the water in the regular bottle. When the baby wakes up, you just gotta dump the powder into the water and shake. Easy peasy.

So just to clarify, all plastic baby bottles regardless of manufacturer have the same microplastic risk, it’s just that Avent and Dr. Browns are the only ones labeled “BPA Free” which gives consumers a false sense of safety?

I wash them with a bottle brush. Water + soap = clean. I've literally never disinfected them with heat or bleach. It's been fine for all 3 of my babies.

Interestingly, Dr. browns has a bottle warmer that is designed to be used with all of their products. On their website, it does not specifically say to avoid with plastic bottles. So I think they might be getting themselves in trouble with this one.

I did everything I could as a new mother to keep my baby safe and healthy. And as soon as she started crawling she would eat random things on the ground. One time she chewed a foam toy and ate some of the foam. And another time she was chewing my sunglasses case and ate some of the leather. So I would tell moms out there to relax, you’re kids going to consume chemicals whether u like it or not. 😂

Hi from France! Here sterilization is no longer recommended and most parents would use room temperature bottle water. Personally I’ve used glass bottles for my twins until they turned 10 months old.

The concern with room temperature water for formula is this is a risk of bacteria which caused the loss of a baby here in the US. With formula we still want to use heated water.

"BPA free" means the plastic doesn't have BPA in it. It's only false advertising if the bottles actually did have BPA in them. Companies aren't responsible for people having no reading comprehension skills or jumping to conclusions that aren't supported by that simple statement of fact. If they were advertising the bottles as "microplastic free" or something, there would be reasonable standing to sue. If the complaint is really what you're describing here, the lawsuit is frivolous and should be dismissed.

Mamavation has a great article summarizing the microplastics/plastic baby bottles and lead/glass baby bottles. Eric Ritter and Detect Lead (has really great Instagram reels) is awesome. From what I've learned, overall Tommy Tippee, Mam (compatible with Lansinoh nipples and ring lids!), and Natursutten, and Nuk offer better options. I loved Pigeon but they're not consistent with their batches being low/no lead.

Here is my knee-jerk, instinctual, I-didn’t-read-the-pleadings-this-isn’t-legal-advice- 2 cents on the suits. The suits were filed in federal district court in CA. The Plantiffs are all CA residents. The defendant Bottle making companies aren’t all CA companies. That’s probably why it’s in federal court - diversity jurisdiction. Federal courts can construe state law and hear state claims where they have diversity jurisdiction. CA state law has a strict laws about marketing and often provides for money damages in a high dollar amount even if the actual damages would be otherwise low or nominal. So, my instinct, without reading the pleadings, without proving legal advice, is that the dollar value of the actual damages to compensate the plantiffs for the harm microplastics caused them might be low, but, the plaintiffs may prevail on their claims if they can prove it’s more likely than not that the defendant companies’ marketing was misleading within the meaning of CA law. As always, great content Jessica and great tips on how to lower the shedding of microplastics while keeping babies fed and parents sane. :)

@@genuinelactation (1) Almost every lawsuit could be construed as a "money grab" because the remedy at law for almost every civil wrong is money - and nothing more. (2) I tried accessing the pleadings via PACER (the online docket for federal courts) but would need to pay a fee to access them as a non-party, so I decided not to read them over. The docket sheet (which is public) confirms that the case is in federal court due to diversity jurisdiction and not specifically because a federal question is involved. Wish I had more intelligence to share!

Hmmm we use dr browns green bottle with green tube and then sterilize steamer. Is sterilizing still needed when our child is 7months now. I was concerned about micro but I was even more concerned about the particulates in the water we boiled and fed her. Now I boiled the water and then let it cool and then pour that water into a water purifier. And now we gotta worry about these micro plastics the companies know about but don’t care about (let’s be real) so the answer is UV sterilizer and glass bottles ? Fortunately our baby can drink room temp milk and cold

As far as I can find online, silicone doesn't shed microplastic even when heated?? So using silicone baby bottles like Boon Nursh and Suavinex could be better than plastic ones

They still have plastic components that shed in contact with the milk. There are also other concerns with the silicone bottles causing feeding challenges which may introduce additional risks. Silicon bottles aren’t solid options just yet. If you are worried about the microplastics go with glass :)

Is it just the sterilizing feature or the temperature itself? I use a sterilizer for its drying function only which gets a lot less hot than the sterilizing side. If it’s the temperature what is a safe temperature the plastic can be?

For plastic it's the cooler the better. Even the dry features on the sterilizers can be quite hot on many models. The challenge is the companies don't have to tell us.

I’ve read that bleach is rendered ineffective if put in hot water - so it sounds like you’d have to use cold water with the bleach if you want that 99.9% killed

Thank you for your informative video. I was aware of phthalates risk with plastic reading the book it all comes from the egg. From my first pregnancy I avoided heating plastic, and for the first months I used the Philips glass bottles. But then they leaked very often while my baby was drinking, I was so annoyed I shifted to the plastic ones. Thinking about that, the cause may be that after using hot dryer for the plastic part of the bottle , the seal was compromised. I am pregnant with my second I am thinking to use the Pigeon glass bottles, but not using heat for the plastic part. About sterilization, we use a Philips uv-c light sterilizer and I think would be enough for the newborn stage. If I switch to glass I can keep using the uv-c sterilizer for the bottles. The issue will be letting air dry the pump parts, which will take much more time than heat drying.

The UV sterilizers typically have a drying feature that is no where near as hot as the other options

Unfortunately I checked myself with a thermometer, and inside the Philips uv-c sterilizer it reaches 150 °F, after 20 minutes of drying. Which looks quite high for plastic I think.

@@momonoki86 that's extremely high for a UV Sterilizer in general. I recommend the Wabi brand and the Tommee Tippee/BabyBuddha brand for those because I know the quality and that it's not getting hot like that. That stinks that the Philips is not venting properly to prevent having to using that kind of heat.

I exclusively pump and feed baby using avent plastic bottles. I also use plastic pump parts. I hand wash and sanitize everything after every use. It sounds like I’m overdoing it and harming my baby?? This is my second time doing this and my daughter is fine but I’m a huge germaphobe and hence feel better sanitizing on top of handwashing. But are you saying stop sanitizing all together? We also warm breast milk because the fat rises and separates after storing in fridge. Baby is full term and no health issues.

This is such a sensitive situation but no I don’t think you are harming your child. I think this is an area where we don’t have great research and there is a potential risk of increased microplastic exposure with your current routine. With my private clients with these concerns we have been focusing on finding a balance that each parent can live with. The answer has not been the same for all families but we have found an option each time that helped the family feel confident in their choices.

We also warmed our breastmilk storage bags. Our pediatric feeding specialists had our babies on Mam nipples, but the Mam bottles couldn’t really be heated easily. ETA: My babies would "click", squeak, and leak milk out of their mouths with other nipples. We had issues. Most babies don't need Mam nipples.

OR...we could work harder as a society to rediscover and support the lost art of breastfeeding. 🙄 And before you say "yes but some women can't!" I'd like you to know that I was one of those women who "can't". Despite pumping every two hours religiously for 7 months I never made more than half an ounce from each breast each time. However, NO ONE, whether in the medical or natural healing fields had any answers for me. You know why? Because anyone who wants to discuss this or find real solutions gets shut down with "but some women CAN'T" We need to stop this. Otherwise we'll forever be at the mercy of bottle and formula companies and you can expect many more lawsuits like this.

With the silicone comotomo bottle heat is okay- if your baby is doing alright with it stick to that. To feed the safest use properly heated water to prep the formula. In this case I think you are good on the microplastics

Any recommendations for pitchers that aren’t plastic? We aren’t shaking the formula in the bottles but the mixing pitcher I’m sure causes microplastic shedding

Me and my husband mix our formula in the biggest size glass ball jar! You have to shake it/ vigorously stir to get the formula mixed but it’s glass and you can get stainless steel lids to screw on to them :)

This is a great video. Personally, I would not do Mila's Keeper glass bottle because the ink/letters on the outside of the bottle are gold in color which is a worry for heavy metals. Even if it were not that color, it still is. Dr. Brown's, from last I remember, don't have anything on the bottle except glass?

My husband and I was concerned about microplasties in formula and breastmilk long before the lawsuit. We only used glass bottles and thank God we did. Our baby's daycare asked us to bring plastic bottles but we fought them on this matter and only used glass bottles.

Glass bottles at a daycare is simply a hazard. If my kid were to cut their foot on your kids broken glass bottle you would be the one footing that medical bill for intentionally exposing children to an unnecessary risk. Your parenting choices shouldn’t infringe on other children’s safety. Keep your kid home with you if you are going to ‘demand’ a center to break safety guidelines

@ceceslivinglife the glass bottle had a thick cover that would prevent the glass from breaking and never once did it break. Also, daycares have carpet floors not hardwood floors. I don't know what daycare you send your kids to, but it sounds dangerous and lacks common sense. You do what suits your kids. I'm doing what is best for my kid.

Couldn’t imagine a worse place for my kids to be , stuck in a room with dirty kids coming from parents like you. Crazy you folks complain over plastic bottles yet bathe your kids twice a month on average…. It’s pretty comical

You do know once your kids enter elementary school they'll be exposed to the same germs and it'll hinder their learning, right? It's only a matter of time. How should we sterilize pump parts for preemie babies? I have a baby in the NICU and bring him breast milk daily.

You want to work with your baby’s health care team to determine what is needed for your specific situation. NICU babies are all unique and your baby’s needs have to be considered when determining what products allow sterilization while minimizing risks. They can also guide you on which forms of sterilization to consider using- heat methods are only one way to achieve this need.

I’m a NICU RN. Currently, we use steam sterilizing - a plastic sterilizer bag we put in the microwave 😳 That is for bottles as well as pump parts. But you can do what you prefer at home. Maybe soak the parts in diluted bleach water? Either way, the parts are not going to be sterile the moment they are touched and/or set on the towel to dry.

There is no harm in shaking milk and the stirring would cause the same issues with microplastics in this case.

I am sure you mean well with this comment but it's actually quite problematic. my question as a soon to be new mom is if you need to have 8oz bottles? i see the Milas Keeper only has 5oz sizes and ive found it difficult to find 8oz glass bottles that i like

I have had babies who eat more than 5oz in a sitting. And if you are sending bottles to daycare, sending multiple bottles for 1 feeding probably isn’t good for the daycare. Plus you will be washing more bottles. Just my experience with fostering kids. Thank you.

@@alisha764 there are always things that are the exception- but the majority won't need that. I do have daycare situations where two bottles a feeding are used though, daycares can accomodate what a baby needs if we have to use a certain feeding method thankfully!
