Schroeder doesn't hate Lucy. He does get annoyed with her but he doesn't hate her. I remember there was one Peanuts special where Mr. Van Pelt received a job transfer therefore Linus and Lucy had to move away. When Lucy was gone Schroeder actually missed her! A couple of times he was playing his piano and he kept seeing Lucy's face. He then says to himself, "Don't tell me I've grown accustomed to that face?!"

I’ve read over 20 years worth of strips and I love what you said about her needing to let up so he’ll start to notice her because as you pointed, out her disappearing in the story arc where she moves away is exactly how he realizes she’s unwittingly become his muse. Also, in the early strips it was explicitly said he found her cute so I think it kinda makes sense that he would like her because he’s always found her cute, she’s confident, she really likes him, and she shows more interest in his interests than any other character even if it’s only to get his attention she’s ultimately doing it for him and because she wants to see him happy (and then happy with her). Even though she’s grouchy and kinda narcissistic a lot of the time and that can definitely be a red flag to Schroeder, I feel like most people who only know Peanuts from tv specials don’t realize that in the strips she’s much more of a usually well intentioned psychopath in the comic strips than the intentional bully she’s portrayed as in the tv specials. Except for Charlie Brown who everyone likes to make fun of (not just Lucy) and Linus for purposes of “normal” sibling fights, she usually has good intentions and is trying to be kind she just doesn’t know how and doesn’t understand the emotions of others.

See I have a totally different thought on this. I believe that Schroeder enjoys the attention. The reason he feels like he can just shut her up and send her away is because he knows that she will come right back to him. No matter what he says, what he does, she will always come right back. And I think if Lucy ever "got the message," and stopped trying, just left him alone, he would start to feel real bad real quick, because he wouldn't have that upper hand, and he might become the obsessive one. Especially if she went after someone else. Our boy would definitely get real jealous. This may not be true at all but it's definitely interesting to look at it from this angle.

He’s definitely In love with her (whether he wants to admit it or not) , but I think he’s just caught up in life and music. Also I think Schroeder just wants Lucy to love his music before she loves him. He’s probably sick of people not paying attention to his music and all caught up with his persona instead of who he really is and the music that he loves. I bet if Lucy came to him just to talk about music or life passions in general, Schroeder might actually start to show some love. Notice how he never minds when she’s just listening to his music and only gets mad when she is trying to make the music about herself( her own persona). I guess you can go infinitely deep here, but the theme IMO is that Lucy just needs to find her own form of piano so she can truly understand Schroeder instead of searching for love in other people. Then I feel like they’d be able to love each other truly as they wouldn’t be dependent on a person loving them to be happy, but rather in love with life. Then they could share their love for life together.

I can see that, what with the Valentine's episode ending with his chewing everyone else out for ignoring Charlie Brown until the very last minute. Though then again, Charlie Brown ended up cutting him off and saying better late than never, then telling Linus he let Schroeder down for interrupting his tirade, so Schroeder might have just been being his opinionated self at that point.

In the beginning the original characters aside from snoopy are about 4 (Charlie Brown, Shermy, Patty) and later Schroeder is introduced as a baby and then a few months later Lucy is introduced as a baby but after Linus arrived and established himself as a toddler Shultz quickly started aging Lucy and Schroeder up along with everyone else to the age of 8 where they then stopped aging for the rest of the strip’s run

Schroeder doesn't "love" Lucy, but he doesn't "hate" her either. He "likes" her. He secretly enjoys her presence because she low-key kept things interesting for him. It's a similar dynamic to Squidward and Spongebob. Squid can't stand him, but sometimes appreciates his company and does care for him even if he won't openly say it. Same applies to Schroeder with Lucy.
@eds10blue79
@eds10blue79 Жыл бұрын
The problem is the strip never gives a good reason why he tolerates her behavior, compared to SpongeBob where he gave Squidward the imagination and the excitement of being a kid, Lucy was a total pest and always antagonized his interests and never really gave him any benefits

Probably personal bias, but although Lucy doesn't respect Schroeder, she does have good intentions. Especially in what you said about their first kiss. (you just said this too) She needs to give him space. On the other hand, Schroeder doesn't hate Lucy. He consistently tolerates her despite her persistant attitude. I do think if she ever gave him more space, they could work.

I think Schroeder likes Lucy. Maybe not as much as Lucy loves Schroeder, but I think the romantic feelings are reciprocated in some way. There's been proof over the years about how Schroeder thinks of Lucy in a positive light; Example 1: When Schroeder jokes around with Lucy while she is supposedly "sleeping". There is this one comic strip (made on April 26, 1955) where Schroeder tells Charlie Brown how Lucy has beautiful eyes, although they can sometimes be a little out of focus. At 8:57 when the comic strip from December 14, 1975 is shown, Schroeder mentions at one point how he loves Lucy's eyes. Granted, in the end of that strip it is revealed that he was joking, but I think that could possibly be a reference to the first strip I mentioned. I also do find it a little weird, though, that he would go out of his way to play a joke by complimenting her instead of taking advantage that she isn't bothering him and he could focus on practicing the piano. I think some of the stuff Schroeder said is true, too. I think he really is fascinated by her and her commitment to him, no matter how much he pushes her away (I mean, who wouldn't be fascinated? A lot of people suffer from unrequited love and completely give up. Lucy is still madly in love with someone who always rejects her love *sometimes rejecting her love in a very harsh way*, and yet she still tries her best to make him like her. Sometimes her efforts might not be the best way to go about it, but still: the commitment is incredible!) Example 2: When the Van Pelt family moved away. Schroeder was flabbergasted that Lucy is actually gone, but doesn't enjoy it as much as he thought he would. He misses her being around, as almost every comic strip Schroeder is seen playing his piano, Lucy is with him. Since it's been that way for years, he might have gotten used to her talking to him during his practicing, with Schroeder only getting annoyed when Lucy is either being pushy or when she says/does something that is out of the blue. Some people say that he missed her as a friend, which could also be true. But, if he did miss her as a friend, he wouldn't JUST miss Lucy, he would miss Linus, too! Another thing I want to point out: When Schroeder thinks back on Lucy being around him, he thinks about when she talks about the possibility of them getting married. It could have been a memory of her celebrating Beethoven's birthday with him, or anything else. But, of all things, the memory he thinks back on is when she talks about marriage with him! Is that not just a little weird? Example 3: Beethoven's birthday Sunday strip. A lot of people will kiss someone if they are really excited about something, the kiss not being romantic in any way. But, basing from Schroeder's reaction after Lucy screamed and ran off, he genuinely wanted her to know that he was the one who kissed her, and not Snoopy. Why would he want her to know that? I honestly don't know. He could have just left her thinking that Snoopy kissed her, instead of putting in effort to call her back over to explain the misunderstanding. It is just as confusing as when he went out of his way to joke with her instead of practicing the piano! All in all, I think if Schroeder wasn't so obsessed with Beethoven and wanted his life to be exactly like his idol's life, and if Lucy wasn't so overbearing or crabby, they might work really nicely together. Both of them would need to fix their own flaws for their relationship (or maybe just their friendship) to work out, not just Lucy. But, flaws or no flaws, I think they both like each other romantically in different ways. What do you think?

I disagree that he finds her persistence interesting, harassment is harassment and it’s not behavior that should be praised or it’s behavior that’s spectacular. There are stalkers in real life that annoying. also Sally is really persistent, she’s not as aggressive as Lucy, but she still is persistent. The reason why the harsh rejections don’t work on Lucy is because she is a bully herself and she is really stupid for chasing someone that she has nothing in common and someone with 1 dimensional personality

I don't know if this is a personal bias or anything, but for the life of me, I have never understood why the "character has a creepy crush on another character to the point of stalkerish obsession" trope was supposed to be funny or entertaining in the first place. There are a few examples I do like, like with Gaston's creepy crush on Belle in Beauty and the Beast, where it works because Gaston is being presented as the villain in that scenario, or Chowder, where the humor came more from Chowders *reaction* to Panini's crush on him rather than the crush itself. But more often than not, no matter the gender, I tend to find obsessive crushes in fiction more annoying than endearing.

I think this works better than most. When get to Lucy more vulnerable side and finally have some Karma delivered to her, even if it’s only temporary. It also fleshes out Schroeder character more because when get to see his more snarky attitude. Schroeder might also be one of the earliest and possibly fewest asexual characters portrayed in media; he shows no interest in girls or romance compared with everyone else in the strip, which makes him more unique and interesting to me. There are times where I felt it went to far such as Lucy destroying the piano, which makes the relationship seem more abusive. Besides that I think it does a good job of fleshing out Schroeder and Lucy’s character, but that’s just mine opinion.

Filmic Reviews and Isabella Cataldo I thought Schroeder may be asexual as well but there are definitely a few instances where he explicitly states he finds someone attractive (earliest example he says Lucy’s pretty) and times when he discusses desire to be married someday so neither asexual nor aromantic I’m thinking demiasexual and/or demiromantic. Also I’m a strong believer that Schroeder secretly likes Lucy and he can’t be without her annoying and relentless antics which is why I’m able to tolerate this trope. I believe in the future she’d be more annoying than aggressive tho but right now they’re both only 8.

When you're a kid, you have crushes, or first loves. A lot of times things don't work out. There's a huge difference in a kid at 8, then at 18, and at 28. It's rare that you have childhood romances. Sometimes those are very special. Schroeder loves his craft. Lucy I don't think understands that.

Honestly I’ve always hated characters that have a stalkerish and annoyingly persistent crushes on people for humor. If I like the person who has the crush ( in this case I don’t) i’d rather not have them spending all their time trying to aggressively get their object of affection to recuperate their feelings. I feel like it demeans a character. If I don’t like them, then I just feel bad for the person crushed on. It’s just one of my personal turn off’s.

schroeder does like lucy, true peanuts fans will know this. he kissed her once, he missed her when she left, in an early strip he called her cute. he’s also her assistant in the psychiatric booth which means they must spend time together outside of his piano-playing. he’s just caught up in his own head, fixated on playing his music and emulating the bachelor-life that his hero led. it’s also assumed by a lot of us that schroeder is on the autistic spectrum. when he’s annoyed with lucy, he lets her know; he’s blunt, and sometimes rude, but never unprovoked. when she’s being kind to him, he’s kind to her. he always listens, too, and usually doesn’t mind her company. but if she gets in the way of him and his special interest, he is unhappy. schroeder is a sweet, well-meaning boy with a crush that he doesn’t know how to handle. lucy, on the other hand, is more emotionally mature (as most girls are at their age) and also more assertive, so she doesn’t understand why he won’t reciprocate her confident advances when he indicates on occasion that he values her friendship and company, and also probably likes her too. neither of them are old enough to have fully developed empathy to the point where they can see into each other’s heads, so they don’t understand why the other doesn’t accomodate their feelings despite their mutual liking for each other. they love to different degrees and show affection in different ways. lucy seems adamant on physical touch and words of affirmation, and longs to find this in schroeder, while he is happiest with quality time and her compliant company, and can’t quite understand why this isn’t enough for her. in short, they’re kids, but i feel like they’d work it out. lucy would probably get bored of waiting on him as a teenager which would confuse schroeder and sort of role-reverse them, i think.
@eds10blue79

The problem is they never gave a good reason on WHY he should like her, she is shown many times that she’s hates his career choice and always disliked his piano playing. At one point she wanted him to end up in a skiing accident, he has no reason to tolerate her behavior at all, instead of the series pairing him up with someone who he could connect and play off of, instead they make him like the character that is known to be a mean spirited abusive bully. She’s not more emotionally mature, heck she is way less mature than Sally who is two years younger than her. She is a narcissist who cares about things going her way. There are many strips where he’s said he wanted to get married to a blonde girl, a girl who can cook him macaroni and cheese, and can play music with him. Not someone who should be dating someone with similar interests to her (like maybe another bully)
@windmillkid
@windmillkid 3 ай бұрын
@@eds10blue79 well, i agree with you on most points. i think the key here is remembering that they’re kids. kids are impulsive and self absorbed by nature, they haven’t properly developed empathy and proper sensitivities yet and more concerned about themselves than those around them. they can’t help it. lucy reads as more selfish because she is more extroverted - she wants to engage with the other kids and can’t understand why they won’t drop what they’re doing and come join her. it’s a crucial developmental stage in childhood that isn’t properly refined until maybe age 11 or 12. schroeder is just as self absorbed, but he’s introverted and so it comes off less brashly. he wants to play his piano, end of, you know? lucy seems immature, but really i think she’s actually maturing fine, she’s just more outgoing than the others, and her impatience with them causes her to act out. the blonde girl anecdote ties into this, too. schroeder is clearly blond even in the comic strips, and so it’s a familiar hair colour, and he doesn’t need to venture far from his comfort zone to fathom himself with this fictional woman. he also says he doesn’t want to marry a lot, which is a contradiction, and proves that he really is just a kid and doesn’t know much about anything yet. as for the macaroni and cheese comment, he says this to lucy out of the blue, kind of insinuating that it’s something she would need to be able to do if he were to consider her as an option. as to why schroeder should like her, once again, they’re kids. people have silly crushes all the time when they’re kids and there’s no two ways about it. similarly, lots of kids hang out with other kids they don’t really even like, but that’s just how you work things out at that age. common interests and convenience and things like that. actually, lucy does at times seem quite interested in beethoven (even if only to impress schroeder), and he likes it when she’s not being silly about it. there are also a few occasions in strips where schroeder is the one to break the silence and offer her an interesting factoid about beethoven. he likes telling her about his interests because she’s the only person who’s always there and ultimately always going to listen, even if she does interrupt with a stupid remarks. you can pretty much make sense (i use this term loosely, it’s a comic strip) of everything with child psychology. it’s interesting, and i guess you don’t really have to read deeply into it, but that’s the beauty of peanuts. plus, it’s fun, haha.
