South Park started out in the crudest and cheepiest to produce way possible. Stop motion animation with construction paper cut out characters. No complex leg movement walk cycles. That simple production process is what helped them meet their airdate deadlines every week when the show got picked up as a series. Nowadays the animation is all done in computers but the simplistic way in which the characters move can be traced back to when the work was done by hand. Drawn Together was kind of a recipe for disaster from the start. Combining different animation styles equals more work. More work means the need for a substantial budget. Complex character movement requires a lot of frames. A typical South Park episode can be completed and ready to air in 6 days. There is no way a Drawn Together episode could be finished in that time frame. They probably needed close to 4 weeks of production time to get an episode ready. The truth is the creators of Drawn Together were not mentally prepared for what they were getting into. Instead of ignoring the critics, they took the stuff that was written about their show personally and decided to hit back. They let their personal attitudes leak into the show and eventually they lost focus. Season 3 was a big F-You to anyone who had a negative opinion of the show. Comedy Central did the right thing by putting Drawn Together out of its misery.

One of the things I hate most about this season is that they turned Clara into a hate-sync for the writers, when she used to be a sweet and misguided character. What happened? I mean, everyone got ruined in this season, but she got it worst (until Wooldoor in the Drawn Together Movie, of course. But we don’t talk about that.)

I can see their logic of not wanting to make a bigoted character have redeeming qualities but it would've worked if they maintained her racism was out of ignorance and not malice.

My only gripe and I'd argue this was kind of a problem throughout the whole series is that Captain Hero got wayy too much spotlight compared to the others. Usually most of the plots were centered around him. I'd be super interested in a 4th season considering the climate today and what they could make fun of or hell even a reboot with a new cast with new types of characters.

The sad part was season 4 and season 5 could have recovered the series, but it was never to be. Either that or season 4 and season 5 would have continued the downward trend and became worse. Would have liked to see how they could have responded to season 3 and focused on improving the consistency of the characters.

At best those Looney Tunes were funny on their own, so a viewer 100 years later doesn't have to listen to the Abbot and Costello radio show to get the joke. I honestly didn't notice much of a quality change between seasons, like season 2 had shitting on pizza, killing the critics, Foxxy acting like a minstrel show character and Ling Ling's becoming white episodes. Also I didn't like Captain Hero's character that much, and season 2 already became pretty much Captain Hero Show, having almost every episode in the middle of it being focused on him.

I love this show. That’s exactly why I hate the third season. You have a point about them getting arrogant in the third season. It’s got a too big to fail attitude, and behind the scenes, the creators thought that they were the best thing ever. In a way, I’m glad their careers tumbled because of this and the movie. It serves as a good lesson in humility.

Transformers G1 Season 3 had no living Optimus Prime because he died in the movie. Then they brought him back as a zombie. And now Comedy Central sees that the cast and crew of Drawn Together had gotten cocky.

Drawn Together had a good concept but had bad execution at the end of the day virtually none of the characters are likable, yes - they had their moments of good character but are mostly one note and most of the jokes on cartoon characters and topical humor like Political Correctness, Disney (Darth Mickey anyone?) and Steroids are mostly done lazily and moreso haphazardly then again, what did you expect when the show was competing (and ultimately failed) against both South Park and The Daily Show and the film that was intended to be the show's closure didn't help the show at all, the film is just as bad [if not worse] than the show

I just rewatched most of Drawn Together (couldn't sit through all of season 3) and I fully agree with what you say. I loved the first season the most because it was the only one that consistently acknowledged the show's initial premise: that these characters are on a reality show and demonstrating the classic challenges of housemates from different worlds having to live together and be exploited for entertainment. I felt they lost sight of this as the show went on and while there was always some raunchy humor it wasn't overpowering and the stories also had some smart humor and sentiment. In the second season I felt them leaning a little too much in a dirty direction but by the third season they leaned fully into it which is why it wasn't as fun to watch. By then the show lost the good qualities that made us fans like it in the first place and it just became about showing how over-the-top gross and offensive they could be just to prove they could if they wanted to. It makes sense what you say about the show turning bad because the creators got a little cocky and a too-big-to-fail attitude using the show as a direct middle to the critics who hated it rather than giving the fans who liked it more great content. That attitude definitely comes through in season 3 and I think it's possible had that approach not been taken the show could've lasted a little longer. My favorite episode is the very first one where Clara shows great potential to grow as a character learning to admit her mistakes and be open to what the world outside her kingdom has to offer, moments like that are why you like her despite the terrible things she says. I also liked how Toot was a manipulator and caused drama by turning her housemates against each other which happens often on reality shows. Fast forward into the third season Clara not only maintains her bigotry but she actually ends up one of the more sadistic, cruel characters and she even lost the sweetness that used to be in her voice. All of the characters showed great range at the beginning of the show and various sides to their personalities which made them interesting. But near the end they all became too repetitive just doing the same Toot-fat/ugly jokes, Hero-stupid jokes, Foxxy-sex jokes, and Xandir-gay jokes while throwing out one grotesque disfiguring image after another. You summed it up perfectly with the Spongebob episode about becoming unphased by shock value if you get too much of it. I stopped liking the show because it just wasn't funny anymore, and the movie was also a huge disappointment. The whole story revolved around the characters still being only one-note versions of themselves and continuing to be crude without any point to it, which I understand was the intent by the creators but taking that route resulted in a highly forgettable story that wasn't a satisfying conclusion to a once-beloved series. It's a shame it had to end the way it did because it had so much potential that was ultimately wasted. I kind of wish the show could be rebooted so we can see what could've been further explored. Okay... 2 issues. 1) just because a racist has a black (or a friend of other kinds) doesn't change the fact that they are racist. A racist can easily see them as an exception or a rare thing above the others. 2) Being homophobic and gay/lesbian isn't a contradiction. That is because to be homophobic is to hate homosexuals. You can be the thing and hate yourself/others for it. It very common and sad. A gay homophobe was raised to hate themself and others like them, even if they do like themselves they will hate that aspect of themselves. Therefore they can go around and easily hate other gay folk. Add on top of that the possible addiction to sexism and yeah; a homophobic lesbian can also trick themselves into seeing gay men as something else entirely and hate that but not hate other lesbians. I have seen people both irl and online who claim to hate gay men yet are fine with lesbians (mostly for the porn) or the other way around where they are fine with gay men and hate lesbians (less often porn but some people do fetisize gay men). Some people were even gay themselves! So yeah. It's possible and isn't an actual contradiction.

The creators also admitted that Captain Hero was so heavily used because he became so stupid, reckless, and cruel that pretty much any plotline or joke would not be out of character. This is the most extreme form of Flanderization there is to the point it should be called something else. Instead of being a character boiled down to one basic trait, they’re boiled down to really no traits except being amorphous enough to do whatever zany dumb thing the plot calls for. You can claim Peter Griffin in Modern Family Guy is the same way. With few exceptions, every single sitcom, especially animated ones, I’ve ever seen seems to devolve into Flanderization...it usually doesn’t happen in season THREE, usually the writers have enough passion and effort for longer than that, but it seems inevitable. Eventually the writers get bored, stop caring about character dynamics, just want to make silly things happen, and instead of having the characters drive the plot, the plot drives the characters.

Personally I'd reccomend skipping season 1 because it's not that great in my eyes, however season 2 is the best. All episodes from that season I love. Also if you're gonna try season 3 go for Toot goes Bollywood and that's it.

i actually always thought the first season to be the worst one because i remember being the only one i got bored af when i tried watching the show from scratch, it had like 2 episodes i liked i guess, and 1 that wasn't as dull as the rest, but overall i thought it wasn't as crazy and insane as the other seasons, which is the reason why i enjoy the show, guess i gotta rewatch the 3rd season now

The only thing I disagree with you on is that you consider the first two episodes as a low point where it was just offensive jokes and shock humor. I saw from the first two episodes, Princess Clara was saying really horrible things to Foxy Love and after their fight, Foxy comes to an understanding that Clara was just saying things because that was how she was raised, that was the reason behind Foxy's kiss on Princess Clara, to open her mind as well as opening her mouth. And in the second episode, you have Foxy Love jumping in to defend Clara who was being hunted by the Mob who was afraid of her Tentacled Vajayjay. As well as Princess Clara being totally ignorant of the Birds and the Bees earlier in episode 2 that was really funny for me. Other than that, I agree with you on most things in Drawn Together including how Season 3 was a bit of a miss with a few good moments but mostly shock humor went over the top. Worst one for me was the Drawn Together Babies episode which I can't really watch without thinking these jokes would have been better if they were adults with their minds reverting back to their baby selves. I also had nightmares about the Muppet Babies when I was younger so that was the reasons why I don't like any cartoon that babyfied their characters, only Rugrats felt natural because you didn't see them grow up until later on in their sequel series.

I couldn't disagree more. I actually think that season one was the weakest and just got funnier with the two subsequent seasons, precisely BECAUSE they adopted this stream-of-consciousness approach to writing. Yes, it's unusual. No, it's not often super character-based. I don't think that matters in the slightest, though. If anything, I'd say both season 2 and especially season 3 of Drawn Together succeed at what Family Guy failed to do. Family Guy does "random" humour, but the jokes have no relation to the narrative. In Drawn Together, the jokes actually guide the narrative and not the other way round, which is a really interesting approach to structuring a comedy show, that also takes full advantage of the freedom you get from working in the animated medium, more than I've seen with literally any other adult animated show. Also, the argument being made in the Entertainment Weekly episode wasn't "if you don't like it, don't watch it." It is, to quote Spanky directly, "people should know you're not our audience." Which I think has some real validity to it. It's why I don't review musicals and, the one time I did review a musical (Rent), I made it explicitly clear that I'm not a fan of musicals in general so to take any of my opinions with a whole bucket of salt.

As someone who actually LIKED Drawn Together in spite of its obvious attempts to be South Park but worse (and I DO mean it like that), I feel season 3 was a straight character assassination of several characters in that show and hearing in interviews that the creators got because of playing Xbox just sounds like an excuse for laziness and not giving a Shit about quality control or creativity and instead just whining about South Park and the critics (and that's not including the movie that shall not be named.)

oh. so that's why it took about two to three years for the second half of "Lost In Parking Space" to come out. I remember seeing the cliffhanger & started getting very frustrated that the second half wasn't being aired :/ I don't mind a lot of season 3 though. a good amount of laughs throughout. & because of "Toot Goes Bollywood" I ended up watching a pretty good Bollywood film cause I just had to know where the Traditional Indian Song & Dance music came from :)

The worst part about this season is that I remember one time i was watching Drawn together on comedy central animation on Pluto tv and for whatever reason they overplay Season 3 for no reason and if that wasn’t bad enough they even repeat that season for literally 3 weeks and sometimes maybe even a month at times. Sure seasons 1 and 2 do play every now and then but for some reason they play season 3 a lot for no reason

I love season 3 I think its better than season 1. But I like the weird decent into madness it still feels like it suits the show. The reason why most of these kind of shows tries to be shocking and offensive is because most people in the world see animation as a stupid and silly thing only made for kids so that stuff is supposed to prove to people that its made for adults and not kids.

Yet Beavis and Butt-Head and even Regular Show just feel more clever in it's innuendos and edgy humour compared to the stuff like this which all want to be Family Guy, there's just something about cartoons targeted for a teenage audience that have better humour, better art styles and animation than the full adult shows that force too much over the top humour and lazy and simplistic animations B&B and RS was taken seriously as adult animated programs, they had nothing to prove they were being what they wanted to be and let the adults see what they kids was actually watching which's why there was controversy surrounding them

Truth be told, Regular Show is made for everyone, although there are a bunch of topics, themes and subject matter that are being tackled for this show in which, it had genuinely good reasons to earn the TV-PG Rating, meaning that had several elements that wouldn't be too bad to be placed within something else like the aforementioned Shin Megami Tensei alongside with other things such as Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira as one of the following examples and stuff. Similarly, if Invader Zim is made by Today, then it would also be rated TV-PG for understandable reasons.

@@maxleon61702 Yeah bro I can completely see ur point, while I wouldn't classify Regular Show as a full-blown adult show, it's in that edgy territory that could still pass as a CN program but doesn't feel like it's for a younger demographic, which is why I also think thank shows like this and Beavis and Butt-head are specifically targeted to a teen demographic, a TV-PG rating sounds about right for Regular Show, it's more accessible for everyone while Beavis and Butt-head was too edgy and mature for kids, Akira's a good example of an animated movie that ain't made with kids in mind, I never watched Invader Zim bro but everything I've heard about it sounds similar to what's described about Regular Show
