Great video! I was a Surgical Technologist for 9 years but went back to school to become a Perfusionist. I'm almost done with my Clinical rotations. Tough but very rewarding. Jobs are numerous right now. Pay is really good and totally love this profession. Graduation in May 2018. As Surgical Technologists or any healthcare professional, we have lots of options to grow. So do not hold back if you think you want to advance your career.

Christopher Ejimofor I want to do this. Currently getting my associates to be a scrub tech though. I think starting there will help. What route did you take to be a PERFUSIONISTS? I think I’m going to work for a few years, go back to school to take a few courses needed, then get my bachelors online at NAU, move to Houston, TX and apply at UTH McGovern Medical School. I saw online that there is a shortage of PERFUSIONISTS.

VERY cool to see. I had open heart surgery 19 months ago to replace a bad aortic valve and an aortic aneurysm repaired with a dacron graft. Very interesting to see what "killed" me and kept me alive during the procedure. I had never seen how the actual machine worked and how it was connected to my body.

This is a comment from a viewer who will probably never be a Surgical Tech. I worked in an acute care facility as a medical transcriber for 30 plus years and have been a patient in various operating rooms. I am now learning via the internet many, many things that were difficult to find in other sources while I was young enough and healthy enough to be employed. I am a perpetual student so I am enjoying your videos immensely, thank you and the facility so much. I hope all who on the receiving end justify all the work iinvested, God bless. GG Marlene

I’m 49 years old and scheduled for open heart surgery in 13 days and watched this video because I was kinda freaking out that I was going to have all these big needles in my neck pre opp while I was awake. I had what I’ve described as blood vessel phobia. I think I’m kinda getting over it with everything I’ve had to think about and go through leading up to this moment. I have a bicuspid aortic valve that is severe and I had to stop cycling and motocross and even limit my activities at the farm about three months ago. The good news is I only need the valve replaced and I am a very low risk patient. I feel so grateful for your video that explained how the surgical team is going to take care of me. Thank you for explaining this process so well and providing the service to people like me who without this would likely be dead in a few years. Because of all the people like you I’m going to be able to get back to living and living a very active lifestyle. 👍🏻

My youngest brother was a heart patient all his life. He was born with a 50 cent size hole in his heart. Overriding arteries. Considerate a "Blue baby" back in the 60s. Childrens hosp. Performed the "mustard" procedure. He outlived his condition by 15 years. Finally in 2018 at the age of 52, passed away from a simple heart catheter at USC medical center. Left us very distraught. We feel the surgeon wasnt trained enough in his medical history. He flatlined 4 times during his catheter procedure. He felt in his mind, something bad would happen. Well he was right. Gone too soon.

Aloha Guys Great video and info. I am going to have to have OHS soon to replace my mitral valve and I was wondering about how the Heart Lung machine works and how the surgeon stops the heart as well. How do they restart the heart?? How long can a person be safely on a heart lung machine?? Is there a concern for blood clotting with in the machine or while the machine is being used?? How do they bring a person back off the machine? Are the persons lungs also stopped while on the machine?? And when do they switch the patient over to the respiratory?? After the heart is restarted but before the chest is closed up?? I am sorry for all the questions but I am a little anxious about the whole process. Btw who would normally explain the process to the patient before the procedure?? The profusionist or the doctor??? Thank You in advance

How does the pumping mechanism work? It looks like rollers are squeezing a tube, pushing the fluid inside. If so, it can't be a simple vinyl tube -- that would break very quickly. Is there a special material that the tube is made from? Does this type of tubing have a name? Thank you!

Thanks for the video. With blood loss I have a general question. I remember with my procedure they said it should be less than a teaspoon of blood lost. Is there anything else surgeons do to minimize blood loss during procedures? Or is it just the fact that I had a laparoscopic procedure which is why so little blood was lost? How much blood is typically lost in open heart cases?

hearts can vary greatly. we could lose as little as 50cc of blood, or as much or more than a liter. Most surgeons go by the motto "dry in dry out" meaning take your time dissecting and cauterizing bleeding vessels. In turn that will minimize blood loss.

Is the setup of the tubing all done without gloves? I saw a video of the tubes getting setup and the tech didn't have gloves on. Is it generally accepted that the chance of touching the inside of the tube is so low that the tubing still stays sterile inside?

What would be the best bachelors to get before applying for perfusion school? Would it be a biology degree, nursing, does it really not matter? Thanks
