INFO: The Mars Volta is arguably one of the best prog-rock band of the 2000s. Rising from the ashes of post-hardcore band At The Drive In, founding member’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Baxler Zavala decided to jump-start a far more experimental band that was gonna elevate their careers even further. They went from creating unhinged, off-cilter music based on raw emotion to creating more intricate and ambitious stuff. Concept albums based on real-life events and music inspired by everything from free-jazz, salsa, prog-rock movies and mythological legends. Let’s take a closer look.

@@_-_-_-Prof.BoskoBiathi-_-_-_ Honestly speaking, I’m enjoying three songs from new album. But, in general it’s not my favourite album so far. But, at least they’re playing again, recorded LP and I going to see them live this year (Berlin or London). So, at least I can go to live concert one of my favourite bands (never seen them live). So, I’m just grateful, that they’re returned. Hope that live won’t be disappointing)

I love prog music, but I have noticed often times it lacks a certain edge, mars volta is a band that throws that idea out the window and land it in your face, I remember hearing drunkship of lanterns and being absolutely blown away by what by what I heard, vocally, instrumentally, thematically, it is just musical enjoyment encarnate, kudos on these videos as I feel they encapsulate what mars volta is all about

Thanks for liking my videos dude. That means a lot. And yes they totally set the bar way, way higher than a lot of other bands. They've always done so. And you can really tell that their meticulous work ethic (Omar's in particular) really payed off.

Lie Likes Music I totally agree, I am a huge dream theater fan, and while their music is mind blowing I have found the Mars Volta have a certain edge about them and their music that makes it feel completely fresh and unlike anything else you would hear, I am Colombian, and the idea of mixing rock with my Latin heritage has always been interesting but extremely hard to accomplish, and then there's this band that does just that in such a seamless fashion, I could go on and on!

Great series!! The Mars Volta is my favorite band and these videos made me appreciate more all the effort and thought they put in their albums. I wish you had talked about Juan Alderete, I think his contributions to the band have always been underestimated, he is not just a great bass player with amazing speed and beautifully phrased bass-lines, his use of effect pedals gives a whole new dimension to many of their songs. keep up the great work!! I always look forward to your new videos.

I know! Juan talked a lot about the last couple of albums how frustrated he was with the writing process. You think about the bass on the first three albums and they were a part of the sound of the band! Especially Viscera Eyes. I remember kids at school would go up to the bass guitar and ask for someone to teach them the bass line when the groove changes. Juan is a monster player.

Great series. I've been watching your videos for months and realized I hadn't subscribed yet. So I quickly corrected that. It's nice to see some people are still talking about The Mars Volta. I'm a fan who was around for basically the entire ride. Was heavily active on The Comatorium (their fan forum), where we (now kinda shamefully) used to dissect every little tidbit of information that would trickle out at the time. We'd speculate on how jams from current tours/bootleg recordings would work their way into the next record (Cygnus' bass groove was long used in jams before it appeared on Frances the Mute), I remember all kinds of alternate song names before they appeared on albums (specific ones escape me now)...I saw The Mars Volta 7 times. Met the entire band in bits and pieces (except Jon Theodore...damnit). They were really something special. I'm thankful for their music. Got to see At the Drive-In last year after being a fan for 17 years too. So that was pretty great.
@groovylobster
@groovylobster 6 жыл бұрын
The Volta drummers are all in their own categories, you can't really call any of them "the best". Jon Theodore was the best at servicing the music, Thomas Pridgen was the best at pure playing skill, and Deantoni Parks was the most innovative, in terms of doing something purely unique on drums.

No prob, i always enjoy mediating discussions of which Volta drummer is the best, because with a band like the Mars Volta where sometimes the only consistent part of the band is their raw energy, it is rather unfair to claim that there's an objective "best" drummer.

I've been a fan since de-loused. I find Nocturniquet unique… and boring. But god, it beats Octahedron. I guess it comes down to what you're listening for. It's like they focus too much on trying to appeal to the mainstream ear, loosing a lot of the essence of what made their sound.

Anyone calling Nocturniquet “shit” is obviously not a musician nor do they have any experience with production. My biggest complaint about the album is Cedric’s vocals seem a little, “emotionless” sometimes, but even then I think it is a great album.

Music is the art of the times as visionary art is the art of space. Music pave us the path to future so to say, The Mars Volta guided us to the next era of musical expression. Really a band that pushed the limits of what we can do with sound. In all that chaos and turbulence in TMVs music there is the underlying order and harmony, such an inspiring band. The guys involved and especially Omar had the grand vision.

Lie Likes Music just cause you've covered them already so well and it seems like it's the next chapter in the story of the band! I'd get why you might be hesitant to, since his solo music isn't as popular and he has SO many releases. As a fan of the band, I'd be very eager to watch an analysis of Omar's solo music. I haven't listened to much of it, so it'd be cool to hear an overview of it along with the stories surrounding it. It might give me a reason to listen to certain releases. Either way, keep doing what you're doing!

When deloused came out it changed my world as a musician.I saw them play live 3 times once during deloused,once during amputecture,once during Goliath.I think the band was too ahead of its time when it first came out and then near the end you could see the burn out in everyone
@LieLikesMusic
@LieLikesMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe they were. But they still got recognized for their work early on though. But about their burnout, you can definitely hear this the most on Omar's vocals. I think his voice suffered a lot from the early screaming of atdi and then the crazy high pitched range of The Mars Volta. It seemed like they all gave everything they had at the time.

Make a video on Between the Buried and Me, please. You'll find them to have strong Mars Volta, Pink Floyd and Yes influence. Their music has gotten more and more intricate over the years, especially since Colors in 2006, to the Parallax EP and LP in 2011 and 2012. I consider the latter one of the greatest prog rock/metal space operas ever.

My personal theory is that Deantoni Parks is going to help bring The Mars Volta into the new music spectrum when they return. If you haven't checked out "Technoself," Deantoni Parks is easily the most insanely creative musician they have had on the drums. His work with Flying Lotus is also a testament that this MF can play.

Wow i didn't know that he worked with Flying Lotus. But it doesn't surprise me honestly. You can see that he's got an intensity and energy behind his drumming. I think we might as well cover at the drive-in and get like the whole Omar/Cedric discography.

The boy with the knives in his voice seemed like it could be referring to Cedric and his vocal nodules. His voice changed a lot around this time so it would make sense that he would write about it. It's possible he was visualizing a surgical procedure where they get removed: having knives in his voice.

Hmm. Nodules? What's that? And yes i've noticed that his voice all of the sudden got very worn out. It's a shame. That's what happens when you push yourself to the limit vocally for so many years.

@@LieLikesMusic I'm no expert but with overuse your vocal cords can grow little lumps that can result in chronic hoarseness. Elton John had some surgically removed as far as I know and his voice became much deeper afterwards.

Can you please do Understanding Coheed And Cambria? It's The Mars Volta taken to the next level with many of their albums are a series of concept albums/rock operas that tell a massive and grandiose Space Opera based on a comic book series called The Amory Wars by the lead singer.

Definitely do an "Understanding Coheed and Cambria" series. I love both bands. However, I'm not sure I'd say Coheed is the "next level" of TMV. I think TMV is much more complex as a band, both in subject matter, as well as their sound. Claudio's story is great. But I never really thought Coheed was ever quite on The Mars Volta's level, musically.
@KamenSentaiMetalHero

AldermachXI what I meant was that most of their albums are chapters in one story with comics to expand on it. I do agree that TMV are more complex musically.
@AldermachXI
@AldermachXI 6 жыл бұрын
Oh. Sorry. I guess I just misunderstood that part. Yeah, many of Coheed's albums (the good ones lol) tell a collective story, their newest being a re-entry to The Amory Wars, while TMV did all sorts of different things, from one album telling a story, to each song on an album being it's own story. I always felt like both bands felt like watching great movies though. Which is what both aim for, so that's cool.

Lie Likes Music I think I get where you're coming from. I'm guessing there wasn't enough good material behind octohedron to make a video about it. idk I just feel like it was a little glossed over. That being said I still enjoyed the video it was nice to learn something new about the Mars Volta.

I’m really hoping for a solid return to the original Tremulant lineup, minus our fallen comrades Jeremy and Ikey. That was almost a completely different band in sound, much slower paced.

That's true. I wonder if they could ever create something like that though. It's a natural progression for them to make more slow paced music i think.
