Hey everyone! Thanks so much for the support on this one! Just wanted to mention - I wanted the video to focus on the three main eras of Sonic, as well as their major games. Sonic R, Sonic Rush, et cetera weren't discussed because this video would end up being three hours, and I'd like to talk about them in a separate video anyway. So that's why you didn't hear about them in the video. I've had a video planned for Sonic R since last year, if it's any consolation! Once again, thank you for watching and commenting, it's been really fun reading the feedback and hearing other people's stories :)

I feel like you’ve forgotten the biggest thing about the Sonic 3 MJ soundtrack - it was the REPLACEMENT soundtrack for the originals. The November 3rd prototype completely revolutionised our view of Sonic 3’s music history, and for good reason. The tracks from the Sonic & Knuckles collection - the ones used over the ones with the MJ written through them - were actually found to have been composed first.

I can't exactly blame him for not knowing this detail (though he might have stumbled upon the S&K Collection tracks if he did a deeper dive in research), but for a musical analysis it's kind of hard to miss how PAINFULLY MJ the final game's tracks are, especially compared to that prototypes' songs.

I'm really glad there's someone out there like you who is able to break down music in such an impassioned way. Traditional music theory is so often divorced from production and matching it to emotions or a setting, only theatre really enduring in that regard, and you're able to parse both your love of music and your love of games to make something that's, at once, a documentary, an analysis, and a celebration. What I can say is that this has given me a far deeper appreciation for game music outside of memorable melodies and emotional connections. When I watch your videos, I listen for different things in tracks, discover differences that enhance certain notes, and I feel I'm all the better for it. So thank you, absolutely. This is one of my favorites of your work. Also giving a brief shoutout to 3D Blast Saturn's Panic Puppet Zone. Really have always loved how it builds on a techno base and plays with being both intimidating with its percussion and isolating with its piano. I really love that OST as a whole, feel like it plays out as an expansion of Sonic CD USA's philosophies... but y'know, better.

If I write about how much Sonic music means to me and what it's done for me then this won't be a comment, it will be a book. Nonetheless, I'm happy to hear someone talk about it as enthusiastically as I would while being able to have their own honest critique of it as well. You sir have my subscription and my respect, thank you for a touching, very emotional video and I look forward to what you do next.

Sky Sanctuary changed my life. The tone supported the emotional rollercoaster the characters were going through at the time. Not sure who to trust, but coming together to take down the real danger. For me, it is basically the theme of unexpected friendship, and clarity of thought, rising above illusion to become your best self. It has a heroic sound, yet a subtle sadness, perhaps regret, turning to a greater resolve... Both heroes being LITERALLY beamed into the clouds (rising above in a sudden jolt) also seemed to mimic the concept of rising to a higher understanding, as well as becoming more powerful together. It's pure GENIUS - and I never looked at video game music the same way again. A true moment of clarity in my young life.

Bro I'm literally crying at this 😭 I was a big Sonic fan when I was 12-14 but I moved on, mainly cuz of lack of new content at the time (couldn't play many old games for money reasons) but I recently got back into it cuz of my hype for the Sonic movie 2 and I was a bit embarrassed at first but I tried to ignore it cuz hey, shit's going AWFUL in the world right now and my mental health is quite shit so finding comfort in Sonic was awesome. I don't know how to express myself when it comes to how music makes me feel, I'm not in that field at all, but it always makes me insanely happy, motivated and hopeful for the future. I've been recently been playing CD and it gave me a rush of inspiration for drawings that I haven't felt on a while, honestly it's somewhat overwhelming but I'm happy that just the music from this game can make me 10 times more creative and inspired to draw!! The classic games have awesome soundtrack that make me feel a weird sense of nostalgia even tho I'm a 2006 kiddo lmao, I love it tho, 90's Sonic was awesome!! - I absolutely LOVE the cheesey songs from games like adventure 1&2, Heroes and more. Yes, they're not deep or anything like that but it's still so perfect! We all need to back off from serious stuff and just appreciate simple things in life, sometimes we need that happiness even if it's from dumb lyrics in a Sonic song. Whatever the case, I'm super thankful for the conclusion of this video, it made me cry because so many of us Sonic fans, old or new, find comfort in these songs and music, it helps us all, in different ways but it help us feel so many things, happiness, comfort, relaxation, nostalgia, motivation, inspiration, and all of that jazz. Thank you for this video, it truly means a lot to me 💙

Thank you for mentioning Dreams Come True and making the link with Sweet Sweet Sweet. I was in love with the Sonic music as a kid, and used to figure out a lot of the songs on bass and keyboard. In my 20s I looked into Masato Nakamura and got really into Dreams Come True, and theyve been one of my favourite bands ever since. I see a lot of love for Sonic music on youtube and people rarely mention Dreams Come True. Fun fact: Dreams Come True have a song called Marry Me, and if you listen to it, you'll see it is a slowed down version of the exact arrangement from Green Hill Zone, and is an example of Nakamura using a sonic arrangement for later Dreams Come True songs!

@@sputnik593 She and Justin Timberlake performed at the Super Bowl. There was a costume change planned, in which JT would rip off Janet's top and reveal a new outfit underneath. But instead of just taking off the top, he accidentally ripped off an extra layer of clothing, exposing one of her breasts on national TV. The main executive at CBS, Les Moonves, was so angry at her for this that he did everything in his power to blacklist her in the industry. Since she was nearing 40 at the time, the age at which our culture deems a woman "too old" to be successful in the entertainment business, this largely worked. As someone who was too young to remember that Super Bowl at the time, I didn't know any of Janet's music before I sought it out myself. She should be remembered like Madonna, with the world remembering many of her hits even years after she began to fade, but radio stations don't play her old hits or new songs.

I love this whole retrospective and it perfectly sums the love many of us hold for Sonic and the music associated but I won't lie that the only offhand mention of the two PS2-era collections does irk me. Anyone who's played Mega Collections and just decided to go into the extras menu knows the magic that the History theme contains. Not once since the first time I opened that menu have I been hit by auditory nostalgia in the purest form ever conceived. The History theme may be one of the most minor themes ever composed but for longtime Sonic fans more than likely stands as a pillar that still holds the love, they cherish with Sonic. The song feels embedded into the collective consciousness of the Sonic fanbase as it should be but also feels distinctly isolated from all negativity that surrounds the fanbase because the song was somehow composed so magically that it breathes nostalgia. The same can be said of Gems Collection's manual theme while holding a more sappy love vibe as opposed to pure nostalgia with History. History for myself personally, besides being there to remind me how much I love Sonic, is also a piece that brings stability and peace of mind because no matter where my life goes that song has never lost it's magic or luster and never fails to heal me personally. For as minor as these two songs are and the rest of Gems and Mega Collections' collective Original songs they're beautiful pillars that alongside Generations help solidify the love older Sonic fans have and help forge a bond with the younger newer fans as they grow and travel back in time into Sonic's history and are the only things I selfishly wish this already long video could've gone into more detail on.

48:53 After this small section talking about the lack of rhyme scheme, I'd like to mention something I heard a long time ago: Those songs were translated from Japanese, a language where by happenstance most common use phrases seem to rhyme in the usual patterns us English speakers are used to. So the concept of rhyme in poetry and music isn't as big a thing in Japanese, because it's their normal like our not rhyming is ours, or so what I was told went.
@tman_theboss4171 Жыл бұрын
That might not be necessarily wrong, but rhyme sceme in Japanese is just as prevalent as it is in English songs. Most songs and poetry in Japan have it. Japanese is a language that is spoken in a poetic nature.

Sonic CD wasn't made to fill in the gap between Sonic 2 and 3, it was originally developed to be Sonic 2. They released it in 1993 because it would boost the sales of the Sega CD if there was a Sonic game that had a fully composed, professional soundtrack. Sonic 2 would sell better as it was made for the main console and not an add on for the console, and the CD wasn't out yet so there you go.
@thestripedmenace4 жыл бұрын
The Mega CD came out in 1991 in Japan, though... But yeah, SCD was original Sonic character designer Naoto Ohsima and Sonic Team Japan's take on a sequel to Sonic 1 - focusing more on exploration, skilled play and atmosphere - while Sonic 2 was programmer Yuji Naka and Sonic Team US/SEGA Technical Institute's, who worried more about making a faster, more accessible game that really showed off Naka's impressive programming chops, hence the faux-3D Special Stages done with no additional hardware and the split-screen multiplayer mode.

Growing up, the music from Sonic always got stuck in my head. The music was unlike any I heard on the radio during the 00s and 10s, which made it seem so much more fresh. You can tell the music was created from a place of passion for the medium, not just to have some generic backing track. Now that I'm listening to more Japanese music, I can tell that a lot of it was inspired by the Jazz fusion and pop artists from Japan in the 80s, and 90s. To my American ears it was like hearing a completely new kind of music, one that made me appreciate video game music more. Sonic Adventure 1's soundtrack in particular sounds like it was lifted straight out of that period of music, and it shines brightly because of it. Hardware limitations on previous consoles restricted what kind of sounds could be made, but with the Saturn and Dreamcast that was no longer an issue, now including actual instrumental and vocal performances. From there the musical themes and compositions have only gotten better, and they consistently shine above other contemporary platformers. Thanks for making this video, it made me realize what made the music of Sonic so special.

Wow, seeing this brought back a lot of memories. My first actual foray into video game music was from Sonic Adventure 1; the cheesy vocals really connected to me in terms of tone with meaning coming when I reached high school. Ironically enough, it was Sonic who inspired me to run my fastest and try out for my high school track team. The songs have since been used as part of my run and exercise routine. Since then, I've been a faithful fan of Sonic mainly for the music; video game mechanics and such were secondary. I've stopped after generations, so I'm not privy to music after that. Still, most songs up until that have been ingrained as part of my childhood. And while Sonic 06 was, to put it lightly, a cluster-bomb, the music was something else! A whole new sound direction that works so well; it was my first introduction to orchestral rock. I still remember what one of my friends said to me about music when I was in high school. Music speaks. Whether listened independently or in its intended context, all songs can create a specific attitude to fit the context and/or desired mindset. It's just a matter of listening and connecting to what the instruments are saying. Even though I'm not musically knowledgeable like my friend; I easily understood what he meant and had a newfound appreciation for video game composition ever since. Thanks for this trip down memory lane and teaching me about the evolution of Sonic music from 1991 to now. It's amazing how much influence the Genesis era had from different music styles; never would've thought Micheal Jackson had influence on the tracks, as well. For what video games were at the time, a big-name artist putting their name to a game was unusual. A lot of things I never knew about the musical side of the Sonic universe has been revealed to me. P.S., the thesis you mentioned for Sonic Unleashed makes so much sense. I never thought of it as such until you said it.

Amazing analysis. I get that you couldn’t cover everything, but I was really hoping you’d talk about the Advance Trilogy and Rush games. They’re different from the direction the Dreamcast games were going for and yet still feel incredibly fitting for Sonic.

Haven't started watching yet, but will know one thing will be highlighted on: "Rolling around at the speed of sound, got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow".
