The very first thing I do before even looking at stocks in the morning is look at how many day trades I have left . If I have one , then usually I make a trade. If I have none left then I just paper trade . Sometimes being under the PDT Rule is a good thing because it limits trades which can help build discipline because you have to be smarter about the trades you do make and less trades also means less potential losses .

I am so glad you patiently and clearly explain these little intricacies of the stock world. I had the misunderstanding that it was 3 day trades a day, with NO awareness of the rolling 5 days. Tim S. keeps saying "hold overnight," so I thought if I held overnight, it wouldn't be counted a day trade. I just heard about the rolling 5 day period, today, so of course I needed to look it up to understand it better. I'm glad my co-worker corrected me, otherwise, I might have been caught & penalized with acting on wrong info.

Question Tim: Say I put $26k in my account. Then I buy a stock for $3k. My "Chase You Invest" says the value of my account is still $26k. At this point, the value of my account is 26k, but I only have 23k in cash. Am I under the PDT rule? Meaning, can I infinitely day trade? Follow Up Question: Say I sell that stock back for same price. So now I'm back to $26k. But! The funds won't settle for 2 days. So during that 2 days, am I under the PDT rule?

I have been trading for about 6 months now and pretty much every trade is slapping me in the face. Almost impossible for me to capture more than a few points. I'm trying to do top-down analysis and MTF analysis, but it doesn't work for me. I'm like, clearly I'm in the 90% losing money, so I open a demo account, do my analysis, then take the opposite of what I would normally take (I know, that sounds silly but I was desperate) and get the same result. I'm starting to feel hopeless, any advice for a struggling trader?

Hey, beginner question here.. If I buy one stock and sell a different stock in the same day does that count as a day trade? Or does it only count if it's the same stock that's bought and sold within the same day?
@dlove5864
@dlove5864 4 жыл бұрын
It only counts if its the same day. So if you are under 25K, you can still make more than 3 moves in a 5 day period, you just can only buy and sell the same stock in the same day 3 times. When I was under 25K I could typically scalp 3x in a week, and then swing 8-10 stocks over multi day periods in that week.

I know this was intended to fully explain the PDT rules, but actually it didn't. I have many questions still. One of the big clarifications I would like is: if the account has over $25K in value (positions and cash), do PDT rules affect the account at all? The reason I ask is that I have a far larger account and yet recently did a large daytrade, then received a warning notice from the broker to observe PDT rules. In fact, their notice was not very clear about the specifics. I am still looking to read the exact wording of these rulings.

Knowing that the exchange may not let me close a position after the 4th day trade is critical, and important to know. They locked my account for only 24 hours after I simply told them that I didn't know anything about the PDTR. They let me slide one time, however once you truly "do know", they will tell you that they warned you one time already, and then they will close it. You cannot go to let's say another brokerage firm, and open an account their either. The closure for 90 days follows you from brokerage to brokerage. You could always wire your funds back to your bank, and wait for the 90 days to elapse. I like your idea about choosing the cash account instead of a margin account. That's how I'm going to do it next time I go back in.

My question is: If my account balance is under $25,000 on a margin account and I open a bear call spread, will that spread be considered one trade or will it be considered two trades since the trade techinically consists of me opening two different positions? Gustavo Godoy No, it is not. Day trade is when you buy and sell on the same day.

Yes, each broker has its own count. They are seperate. That's why it's good to have more than one account.

So what if you have 25k then your day trading then your stock goes down so your sitting at 19k ( if everything was to be sold in that moment in time) DOES that make you go into the rule at that time then?? im so confused.

If you buy shares of a stock and then buy more of that same stock in the same day,. At the end of the same day, you sell it all, is that 1 or 2 day trades?
@lordrudolph1037

Etrade counts EVERY move. I just got put on a 90-day cash only for this a couple of days ago. I had 1 day trade left and I saw a great opportunity, but wanted to test it out. I went in small... it started to grow so I bought more, then bought some more. Once I was where I wanted to be I sold them all at once. One day trade, right? Nope. Etrade counted this as 4 day trades and !**boom**! - I'm put on restriction. Sent away, rejected, sigh. Haha, that's actually how it felt/feels. I read that a "day trade" is one round-trip. Two bookends. Meaning, buy all you want but as soon as you sell it you've made a round-trip, two bookends, ONE day trade. I was wrong. Etrade doesn't calculate it that way. I should have researched it better. This is a quote from their site, and I added their link to it below: "Making several opening transactions and then closing them with one transaction does not constitute one day trade. Remember, it has to do with the customer’s intent. In the following example, the customer clearly intends to execute multiple trades, so they are counted as multiple day trades. Each buy is a separately placed order and therefore, the STC is not considered one single trade but rather qualifies as three distinct closing trades." us.etrade.com/knowledge/library/stocks/day-trading-basics For me, I'm not taking it too hard... it's just a temporary hiccup, and I can still trade, and paper trade, and save more money. Plus, I have been working to be more disciplined anyway and now they're "helping" me in that. [Not sure if other brokers interpret/execute the rules the same way] Hope this helps!

Lord Rudolph I finally got in touch with Ameritrade and in my instance, It was one day trade, so long as I only sell once. If I had split the selling in some way shape or form, it would have been multiple. I was so nervous. I thought about a cash account but 2 days for your money to settle defeats the purpose.
