Hello Quincy! I'm doing a little of catch up, and I'm GLAD I watched this video. This is GOLD, the explanation on the foot technique it's just AMAZING. If I may give a small feedback, maybe this video would benefit of a title enlightening the contents of himself! Maybe some drummers want to learn about feathering and they can't find this content! My "studio roommate" has a pedal with an extreme configuration, the beater is made by hard plastic, and the beater is at 90º from the drum head (almost parallel to the ground). I've been working on my feathering in this configuration for the last 2 years, and yesterday I put my pedal on with your advices and (obviously) it's much more easy for me! But I think "training" on that extreme settings worked out for me! BTW the "working doubles" hands and foot accenting the 2nd note is ALSO gold. THANK YOU QUINCY!

Beautiful lesson as usual 😊 I don't know if you already mentioned it in another video, but for me it's essential your sitting posture since the body weight has a great influence on the freedom of movement of your feet/legs.

Great stuff! I think it’s good that you make the point that we’re all different and that the pedal set-up needs to reflect that. It’s never a “one size fits all” thing! Thanks as always, Quincy…😎

Great lesson as usual. One thing that I always found interesting is how many players want to prop the bass drum up on a little pedestal or stand. I never found this necessary. I don’t really like the dead center sound on my 18”. I prefer it to be about 2” off center. Plus, I’m only about 5’6” tall so raising the bass drum would kinda cause everything to get raised. Which brings me to the next point which is seat height. Seat height plays a part in how the bass drum gets played and how we produce the sounds we get. Seat height will also effect doubles on the bass and stamina. Keep the lessons coming please! FP

I appreciate your comment very much Frankie P! I never liked the bd being propped up either. Just does feel or sound the same at all. Cheers to you sir!

Thanks for the pedal video . I’ve struggled playing bosses at various tempo and samba’s are very difficult . I decided I needed to practice doubles at a medium tempo every day for about 5-8 minutes. I realized that the bossa doubles were similar to doubles played by rock drummers as on Aja by Steelly Dan . I think there are 5 different drummers on that album all with different beats . Bernard Purdue was on several tunes but difficult to get my head around. I chose the tune Peg played by Rick Morrata to focus on because it’s a two-phase beat repeated throughout the tune . Bottom line , so i practice my foot technique with that tune everyday, as well as feathering and the bossa doubles. Hopefully that’ll help me play better and steadier bossas and rock-type feels if I need them . Thanks for another great video and welcome home !

Love your lessons, Q! I have a question on your bass drum beater - is it a softer felt? I've been having issues with mine bouncing/buzzing when I try to let the beater rest on the head like you demonstrated. It seems like no matter how lose my bass drum head is or how I set my pedal up I'm still having trouble with this. Thanks again for all the information you share!
@drumqtips11 ай бұрын
I use a regular felt beater. A little rebounding upon contact with the head is not horrible but if it’s bouncing a lot, try lowering the beater. The lower it goes the less it can rebound. Als make sure your foot is all the way up the foot plate.
@dylandelehoy146011 ай бұрын
Awesome, I will give that a shot! I definitely noticed a huge improvement in my dynamic range when I moved my foot up, now I'm just working on incorporating both open and closed tones in my playing. Appreciate your advice and inspiration!!

I heard but had struggled to . Maybe the phone . Practice room no problem . Apart from the very rare musical situation where dead 7:47 is needed . I am well versed with the btb problems due to playing heal down m rock bands with bad technique . Danger ⛔️ Maesre Quincy you have esp when it comes to my past mistakes & my pretty mixed them . First I went to heal down and when good I now use the halp way up & down . And the slide thing Jo Jo used . I’m have now my tensions loser & sit higher too .! I alway put shiny surfaces on the bottom of drum shoes . Moving auround the foot board so help - sweep spot but moving it around ???? Throne / seat high ? Thanks again your content is on I go to . Because it’s just so great Thanks sire ❤ PS I’m doing the No spring pedal rounrine heal up to down over 1/2 bar to bar 4 s

Man with the Q-tips. I would love to try the 3rd bass drum technique you explained, a hybrid of the first two techniques. Not sure I completely understand it but it sounds intriguing. Question on feathering: I've done it for a while, but what would you consider the "peak" tempo to reach in mastering the feel? I think I last did 100 bpm to 110 bpm two years ago. Nice video; you reminded me that I need to reopen Bass Drum Control by Colin Bailey. ;)
@drumqtips11 ай бұрын
My man! I think your should be able to feather comfortably up to about Q note = 260. Yeah that C. Bailey book is nice. Thanks for watching doc👊🏾

Maybe I’m a weirdo, but when I practice feathering, it is hard for me to tell how accurate/sloppy my foot is since it is so soft. Is it possible to feather TOO quietly?
@drumqtips11 ай бұрын
If you just practice with just your feet, you should be able to hear and decipher how you’re feathering. When you add your hands and you’re playing in time, if you don’t hear it, that means that you must be doing it right. But if you don’t feel it then maybe yeah you can give it a little more “juice” to give the groove a little extra feeling.
@grantallardyce528211 ай бұрын
Hi Quincy, when doing your doubles are you leaving the beater against the head…it kind of looks like you are…how do you avoid that kind of mini flutter sound? Like what you try to avoid when getting clean taps on a snare drum. Does that make sense? Great video! Thx
@drumqtips11 ай бұрын
I would adjust your pedal a bit so that you don’t get the extra rebounds on the head. It’s ok if there is a little bit of mini-rebounding, as long as it’s not so discerning to the ears. Listen to mine. It’s not completely mini-rebound-free. Good luck Grant!

Are you always feathering? When would you not have the bass drum going?
@drumqtips9 ай бұрын
Most of the time I'm feathering when I'm swinging. I break it up sometimes for a more modern sound.
@bradbrouwer893711 ай бұрын
Curious if you ever play swing tunes with no ‘feathering 4’ and just occasional bass/snare drum comping patterns or are you always switching between the two on the tunes you play (if comping is required).
@drumqtips11 ай бұрын
Good question. I don't always feather. I feather without thinking but if I don't want to feather, it's a conscious decision.

Great lesson Q! Nobody talks about pedal adjustments, so thank you! I have often struggled with beater height on 18” drum, and also tried using bass drum “lifters” for a number of years, to keep beater height/weight higher and still strike the head in the center. I have since gotten away from that (another thing to break) and found a decent height, although it’s not exactly center, as you mention. I will mess around some more because that center spot has the nicest tone, IMHO. Best - E
