Another thing to learn… stomp+toe. For me, one step forward requires two steps back ; the instability of unlearning and relearning 😅

Your sound and feel is great. What type of hardware do you prefer for the bass drum and high hats? They seem to be very responsive to the nuances of your technique.

This is a very good video Von, thank you for making it and putting it out there. You're timing, feel, and style are impeccable. I wish I could play drums that well :) I searched around for something like this because I'm so frustrated with my right foot technique. I'm 41 years old, I still can't figure out playing doubles. I have all the technique I need in my hands, I have good four way coordination, I have tons of knowledge and theory, I have a music degree, I spent two years in a MM in Jazz program even - and my bad right foot means I can't play even the most basic music with a good feel. It's so frustrating! I shall try implementing what I see here and get back to you with questions after spending some time. Thanks again for your willingness to share and for your positivity & cheerfulness.

Thanks so much for your kind words and detailed comment. It's nice to hear where your at and what's giving you a hard time. I'm really glad you found the video helpful and I totally get where you are at. You know what really improved my bass drum doubles? Samba. You might also try playing Samba both with heel down and heel/toe techniques. You'll feel some muscle burn in the beginning so be sure to take a break every 5 minutes or so and start off slow. If you try it out, let me know how it goes! Keep swinging my friend 🤙

@@jazzdrumschool Thank you Von. Samba has been a bane, but I'm determined to master it :) Where should I be feeling muscle burn? Part of the difficulty for me when doing anything heel-up is that I lose my balance if the beater isn't buried in the head. As I've been trying to mimic your technique of "floating" on the pedal, with a nice soft first stroke that involves the entire leg, I have instantly felt pain in my lower left back. The muscle burn I feel is in my quad. I'm being careful not to lean forward or backward, but to sit straight up. I scooted the throne closer and raised it to help me with my balance, but my back still feels strained when I go from having both feet on the ground to lifting my right foot.

I'm sorry for the delay! Ryan, you might need to strengthen your abdominal muscles. You are doing some kind of weight displacement to compensate for weak muscles somewhere and I think possibly in your stomach area. Changing your foot technique is a gradual process and you have to strengthen muscles you weren't using before to make this transition as well. Because comments get buried here, please shoot me an email vonbaron(at)vonbaronmusic.com if you need more help. Many thanks for sharing🤙
