I used whatsapp from its release to my country. Never paid the dollar fee because móvil carriers used it as a way to compete each other and offered is part of the service. As for data caps, it has gotten to the point that the carriers include a separate whatsapp data tier on top of the regular data.

It still doesn't. But it has more than a billion user, and they are constantly making it more useful. Someday it might (say helping businesses connect to you, digital payment gateway etc.)

Not selling, it is targeted advertising. You search for something in your phone or laptop, there is 90% chance you will see an ad of a seller or provider of that product next time you log onto Facebook/instagram. Similarly Google is also extracting your identity for targeted ads to reach you. Google as a company is only profitable from their Google Ads revenue, all other services like drive, maps, mail, even youtube ,are not making profit. They are just creating an ecosystem, so people will stay inside it and google can use their location, search or any social interaction data(big data) to be analysed and get benefits to their ad business. Similarly Facebook. They use WhatsApp/Instagram for user data collection and let targeted ads reach its users. But once the database is so big and google/facebook give a loop hole to the collected data, anything can happen, for example like recent Cambridge analytica scam. But we can't see in what form a loop hole comes, even facebook/google wouldn't be able. So as per they guarantee that our data is safe with them, recent incidents prove that it is not, and we have trust issues with their guarantee now. We even saw facebook apologize front page in the newspaper for our data being breached by Cambridge analytica. We cant trust these companies for the security they say they have on our data. People even say what they discuss near by their phones have appeared as ads in Facebook/Instagram. They are even taking our voice snippets these days without our notice. It's still unsure that OK GOOGLE is the only hot word for google assistant, or are there enough ad oreinted secret hotwords that no users are aware of. These companies can even share these data ,willfully or forced under circumstances, to their government. Government can use this for their bilateral relations. This extend things have gone. Try avoid using google product for a week, even keyboard, you will see how dependent are you already to their services. The relevance of all these business models came only after 2010, when mobile data speed started to spike up. Like subscription free over the air TV channels of 90s who made profit from ads, companies started free online streaming and related system. Facebook is just one among, they will continue to be that in an unperceivable level.

do you realise that "product manager" or "product marketing" and business positions have nothing to do with selling a product right? A product manager is someone who helps develop your product... in this case, the whatsapp app, or whatever update they plan on doing, this is a position filled mostly from day one in any app development that have a big budget... as for the others, kinda like basic standard team...
