Understanding Your Dog, is a short documentary exploring our relationship we have with our dogs that has also been nominated for an RTS Award.
It explores how their behaviour can be tracked all the way back to wolves, which Looks upon how they feed and socialise within their social groups and how within dogs we can misunderstand this as being aggressive.

i was attacked and mauled when i was 4 years old by a brittney spaniel...she ran out of the unfenced backyard next door and latched onto my face...i was the 7th kid she mauled..did i hate her? no...did i become afraid of dogs? nope...i love all dogs..reason for her attacking? her owners were neglectful idiots...unfortunately that dog was punished for their stupidity by being put down...i am now 32 and i still remember it all and still carry the scars as a reminder of the cruelty of human beings..not of dogs.

+Aléxia Brooke I've been attacked several times by dogs in my life (without very serious consequences though) because of my lack of understanding then. Yet I didn't develop fear or bad sentiments towards my dogs or dogs in general. Whenever I see unfamiliar dog, it immediately puts a smile on my face and brings joy to my heart. And this works very positively on all dogs. Dogs love me from first sight. Don't you notice, they also smile? :)

Although I've never been bitten by a dog, I have been growled at, specifically by my step fathers dog for petting his head. I didn't understand the body language at the time and he bared his teeth at me, but five minutes later he ran up to me with his tail wagging asking for a belly rub. I didn't hate or fear him because of it. He was just telling me not to do that and that he didn't like it. Animals tend to love me in general.

+Vegan burger I totally agree and think it's a great idea. I live in a neighborhood that has a lot of dogs and children (a few schools nearby). The children ride their scooters or run past dogs while laughing and screaming without hesitation. I've seen dogs lunge and bark at them, maybe because they want to join in on the fun but whatever reason. I'm amazed that the parents don't stop and think about the possibility of what could happen. My dog is friendly and is hand shy when folks try to pet his head, but pet him under his chin first and he's happy to let you pet him on the head. We've done handling exercises on him since he was little so he tolerates it, but the number of children who have just run up to him and tried to pet his head worries me.

***** yes when a dog does indeed do damage, and is irrevocably dangerous, it must be put to sleep no matter the breed. What I'm revolting against is the unfairness between breeds. I don't know if you've heard of the it, but in Denver I believe, pitbulls were banned because of an incident with ONE dog, and more than a thousand pitbulls, who had NEVER done a wrong in their lives, were confiscated and put to sleep, these animals, some who had been with their owners for more than 10 years, were murderer ( I don't know how else to put it) because ONE pitbull attacked someone, this would NEVER happen with chihuahuas, or even labradors,or any other breeds considered non threatening, do you know which breed is responsible for the most bites ? Labradors. Do you see thousands of them ripped from their home and killed ? nope. That's just for 'dangerous' breeds. There are no dangerous breed, just dangerous humans, and dogs who pay the price....

I think it's time we realize domesticated dog are NOT wolves, nor are they little human babies. They should be recognized as a species within themselves, a domesticated dog...

Dogs are a subspecies of wolves (canis lupus familiaris). Many dogs can still breed with other wolf subspecies, that simple fact makes them of the same species.

Hodoss I agree with you from a technical stand point Hodoss. However, the point of my post is for people to stop using wolf behavior/psychology to explain domesticated dog behavior and psychology. Yes a lot of the dog's behavior is rooted from their ancestor the wolves, however it have been about 15 thousand years since they have been domesticated and a lot of their behavior have changed. An example is the pack model in relation to feeding order. There are still people these days that say they MUST eat before the dog in order to be "alpha". Within a wolf pack, the alpha eats first and gets the choice of meat. Then according to rank, they eat in order. However, for the domesticated dog, people fail to realize they are scavengers primarily and NOT hunters unlike their wolf ancestors. This mean they do not eat in packs, nor require a pack to hunt. There is no feeding order for scavengers.

Davis Tran I grew up with a pack of dogs in a big property and I can tell you they were fierce hunters. They had a strong pack mentality, and a few died because of power struggles within the pack. As we would feed them each with his bowl, that should in theory nullify the need for a feeding order, however they would reproduce this behaviour where one tries to eat in the other's bowl, though they would of course be more respectful of the alpha male and female's boundaries. I agree however that people's interpretations over pack behaviour and humans having to act "alpha" are often retarded. The very fact that you are giving them food means you are dominant. Basically for the dog you are some sort of food summoning wizard, he assumes you have all the food you want whenever you want. Wether you eat first, at the same time or after isn't important. When a dog is spontaneously begging you for food, you already have domination.

Yeah for sure we have to study wolves to understand dogs MORE. but I agree with Davis in a point that DOGS (and cats) are domesticated animals that became a species itself so its totally diferent then anything you see in the nature. Dogs will have something inside them that will differentiate them from what Wolves, Tigers, Lions may have in commum.. Its complex, but your dog will never have to hunt. He knows by the end of the day he will have all its needs fullfiled... It should be more awareness of that when concerning dog training. I think.

Before my pups become dogs. As I feed them I remove food from their bowls as they eat. I put it back and then take more and put it all back. Over time the dogs become accustomed to hands going into the bowl while they are eating. They do not growl or bite if a child approaches them. I do this every few days. My Sheppard would share his food with any child. Excellent program.

I used to drop treats in my boys bowl when he was a puppy, now he's a 120 lb dog and I stir his food with my hands while he eats every now and then... He licks my hand if he even stops eating lol

There should be a worldwide requirement for somekind of "dog license". Something pretty basic where you have to take a Dog behavior course in order to be allowed to own a dog. Even more so with bigger breeds.

And people think I'm crazy when I growl at my dogs when they do something bad instead of shouting at them. Just yesterday on the daily pack walk my chihuahua growled at a woman so I barked and growled at my dog and he snapped back into shape. The look on the lady's face was priceless. Anyway, the opinion of dogs not being able to be around children, I call BS, my life was saved by the family dog we had when I was 3 or 4. She woke up my mom in the middle of the night when I was having an asthma attack, by the time my mom got to me I was purple.

What matters is that you, as a responsible dog owner, has taken the time to teach your dog the difference between right and wrong and you maintain the consistency so that they can learn it and learn that there will be no deviation. Yep. I don't literally growl, but it's a similar reaction. You show that you're the dominant animal by showing that the dog has crossed a boundary, not by getting angry. When you get noticeably mad, that shows to the dog that your dominance is weak. Things that would seem mean to do to a human are normal for a dog. We're smart enough to understand and communicate on their level, but they can't do the same.

That woman in the beginning of the video is very arrogant, in the sense of raising dogs with children. If you raise a dog around people, they aren't going to hurt children. Dogs aren't naturally aggressive, unless they have been abused. I myself have been attacked by dog three times, but I still love and respect dogs, and I know how to train them so the will be ok to be around all types of people.

Exactly. My daughter was raised with GSDs. They were absolutely amazing with her. Now her two toddlers are being raised with them along with a Dane and Mastiff. The 2 GSDs are Police Dogs as my daughter and son in law are on the Canine Unit.

+Cenozoic I have to disagree with you about saying dog owners should do research on Wolves. Dogs are NOT Wolves. They may share 99% of DNA but that's it. Our dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years. Remember in this video the Wolves are not in their natural habitat which is the wild. It is totally different. These Wolves are not hunting for their food, their food is given to them. Our dogs don't hunt for their food, we feed them. We also socialize and train them. But the sad thing is many owners have no clue how to do either. Also there is no such thing as alpha, dominance or pack in the dog world.

My little toy poodle intimidated a Rottweiler. Seriously. She ran up to him and started barking and growling like crazy and he whimpered and his ears bent back. I actually felt bad for him. Pit bulls and Rottweilers can be gentle creatures if raised properly. Unfortunately, many of them are not raised correctly. I personally would not get a Pit bull or a Rottweiler because I don't think that I am able to raise one properly.

Dogs will follow humans 1.) because they have been selectively bred to look up to us (like you said) 2.) humans always provide good, fun, exciting things. 3.) they trust us. They don't exactly have much of a choice either:) I agree that we need to understand our dogs because they can't speak our language. We need to be able to know what they are feeling, and if we know that then we know when we are pushing our dogs too far, when they are happy, and when they are so excited to be with you that they will do anything for your attention. Dogs are territorial, it's expected for some dogs to protect their territory like that. For most dogs, their daily walking route is also their territory. I know your frustration with loose dogs, the neighborhood I walk in thinks that it's perfect fine to let their dogs roam about wherever they want to go. Next to a street even! Some of them aren't very friendly either... probably being territorial! My dog would probably do that too if I was ignorant enough to leave him outside without a tall fence to keep him secure. Yes I agree completely, dogs will react differently when a person is calm vs. when a person is anxious or unstable. That's just reacting to the energy, like you said. Some dogs are more sensitive to your energy than others. Some will be confident even when you aren't. Most can be taught to be 100% confident even when you are clearly anxious. It's how you teach them to react to certain stimuli. I think it's a little silly to have to always be calm, because that's impossible. Being calm sure helps though! A dog walks all over you when you constantly reward an obnoxious behavior. Take my dad for example, I tell him to ignore the dog when he jumps up but he just won't listen and keeps giving him attention whenever he jumps up. Now what do you expect the dog does when my dad gets home? He jumps up and goes crazy of course! Now don't forget that my dog doesn't do this when anyone else walks into the house, just my dad. Heck, everyone else in my house you could call unstable, even myself, but the only person who makes my dog go crazy is my dad! When you are calm, it helps your dog become calm also. If you hand the dog to an anxious or frightened person, he might react in a more anxious and frightened manner. That's not to say that he won't be calm around an anxious person though. Feral dogs do have family ties though (not always) but a dog becomes feral after 2 generations or something like that, at least that's what I remember reading. That means that the parents had to have been surviving on their own (or were already feral dogs), mated, and then cared for the offspring themselves. There's the family tie, and it's more natural than the typical family pet. This is a good conversation, usually people get all butt hurt when you disagree with them.

I realise this is an ongoing argument about how much 'wolf' remains in domestic dogs, I like to keep an open mind, as dogs continue to surprise and inspire me every day, however much I think I know them. Some breeds are very. very far away from their wolf ancestry, but then you have breeds like the sled dogs that are still pretty wild. I think as dogs lovers, we should try and appreciate every dog for their individual qualities and personality....

They don't really behave differently, they just behave more like puppies. Anything you do that works to train a wolf will work to train a dog However, not everything you do to train a dog will work on a wolf. There are a few new learned characteristics, but otherwise, going by their incredibly close ancestor is a much better way to go.

This is very informative. I've had trouble with my dog being insecure around other dogs, often resulting to him "attacking" for a few seconds and then going back to what he was doing, which is clearly a fearful reaction to an uncomfortable situation. This clarified what signals I need to take into account when meeting other dogs, and stressed the importance of socialisation on dogs, which I strongly agree on. Very good video.

I understood my 3 dogs so well. here is a story of how well I knew my dogs. I had a dog that enjoyed laying on the backseat of my car when it was parked in the driveway. I'd turn off the interior light and leave the back doors open for him. we had a different car that I could drive to work and that's what I did. one day I came home from work and my mom told me my dog had bit my sister. I went upstairs and I asked her what she did to make him bite her. she didn't answer and I asked her again. she didn't say a word. I said OK let me tell you what you did. he was laying on the backseat and you pulled on him to get him out he growled at you telling you to leave him alone. you didn't listen to him and you pulled on him again and he bit you. I said is that what happened? my sister said I just wanted him out of the car so I could roll up the windows and shut the doors. I said was he hurting anything. no. was he bothering anything. no. was it raining. no. I said maybe next time you'll listen to him.. Word FOR WORD is how that incident took place and I was at work when it happened. NO my dog didn't bite her hard enough to get blood it was just a flesh wound. did I scold my dog? no because he had tried to tell her to leave him alone and she didn't listen. my sister never tried to get him out of the car again. she learned to listen to him.

This video is one of the best I have ever seen regarding the true nature of dogs. I couldn't agree more. I have had several bull terriers and they are the sweetest dogs. Any dog can become un-naturally aggressive from abuse. Dogs should be allowed their NATURAL aggression. It is part of the animal. If you beat a chihuahua it could become un-naturally aggressive and bite the shit out of you. The difference is that a chihuahua can't inflict the same level of damage that a larger dog of any breed can.

The amour of physical activity the breed needs, the temperament, train-ability, ect. My family originally wanted a sheltie, but that breed wouldn't have worked for us! I had Ade in to help with my dog and he was amazing and extremely helpful,he knows a lot about the ways in which dogs behave and how you can control that. I now know how to handle my dog and so far it has worked with no problems :)

My uncle was an army dog trainer when i was a child and his family dogs were ex military dogs. 4 Alsations that were intelligent, calm, very well trained, and good with strange dogs and people unless a few words were said then all hell broke loose. I used to love going to his house. Scary but fun to have them in the garden knowing what they have been trained to do, and have done it in combat. I few scary moments like when i used to think "hmm i wonder what they are thinking right now" as i look through the wide open door and all 4 are sat side by side, in size order, looking right at me. I used to wonder which was the fastest, because that was the one i would have to uppercut one day, while screaming like a little girl as the others ripped my nuts off. It ended up being the cat that clawed my legs to bits instead.

ario damar Personally i don't like my dogs to do tricks - each to their own, it just feels demeaning to me. However, many dogs do benefit from having these reward mechanisms in their life - at a Basset Hound "enabler" I find it hard enough to get him to wake up for long enough to do anything - it's 3:45am and he's asleep on my bed whilst I'm downstairs wondering if I should have just had a 3rd child instead :)

I have chihuahuas that we rescued and they are still a little jumpy when they see/meet people and dogs. We've slowly been introducing them to people but just yesterday my dog was "bombarded" by an eleven week old lab pup and he gave her a warning bite on the face the owners instantly blamed my dog and wont come near us any longer. I tried to explain to the lab pups owner about my dogs and she was forgiving but she no longer aproaches us on walks. Ive been told I have to put a muzzle on my dog to walk him in the park and I dont want to. I need tips on how to get around this.

I came to my cousin's house for the first time in years and he had a sharpay dog (sorry unsure how to spell it and the correction list only lists words related to sharp) he didn't seem to take to me and every time I moved, he would act concerned and started barking at me. Living in Manhattan, I took my son (under 1 year at the time) to the park in a stroller & this was known in the neighborhood as the "doggy park" for obvious reasons. One time I took him after eating ice cream and all the dogs came in for a lick. I held my son's hands at the time so he could not grab at the dogs. By doing this a number of times, my son learned not to grab at a dog, but to let them snif him first. This behavior stayed with my son. I hope I did well in teaching my son to let the dog get to know my son before my son tried to pet him.

james crowe instead of? personality indeed. Breeds have breed standards in which do not only stand the standard for looks but also personality. This way you can read an learn about the dog and get to know what kind of dog it is supposed to be.(obviously there are always some dogs that don’t fit in the breed standards but generally speaking. If you would want one that has the typical characteristics of the breed you can always ask the breeder, after all the breeder knows it’s litter best) You can also ask some people who have this particular breed as pet and ask if their dog lives up to the breed standards to see if it is actually true what the breed standard is saying. (Sorry for my English I am Dutch)

I can touch my dog when he's eating and I can even tell him to back off of the food that he's eating, take the food away (even a delicious raw meat big bone), put it back and tell him to continue eating. He will not touch it if I don't tell him to continue his meal and he will interrupt eating if I say so. And I can pet him while he's eating, no problem at all. We used to touch him and interrupt his meal since he was a pup so that he would think it's normal and to avoid food agression.

I read it was more dangerous to mix-breed wolves with dogs than just have a wolf a lone as a pet, but my family had friends who had a female German Shepherd-wolf named Lady and German Shepherd-Rough Collie named Duke. They were both very sweet natured. I also met a pure wolf on a palette in a Lowe's and he was quite calm, but I had the feeling he'd be happier in the wild than the suburbs.

i am always very delighted when on a dog walk i pass parents with small children and the children want to go ballistic on my dog but the parents hold them back and explain them to never run at a dog as it will most likely frighten the dog. sadly i have also come across the parents who tear their child off the ground whenever a dog closes in, no matter how small or non-threatening. and people who are so bad at reading rather obvious dog language that they were afraid of my very friendly middle-sized dog who at a slow trot came over to them, ears and head lowered, low tail wag and initiating a friendly/submissive crawl as it got closer (and my dog didn't come closer because she was badly behaved, but because those idiots started talking to her, thus inviting her to come over)

Dogs should never be allowed to be aggressive around their food or toys. This can be easily prevented by proper training as puppies. I've never had any dogs growing up that had a problem with this and we could literally take or touch anything our dogs had in their mouths regardless if it was my dad, mom, me, neighbors, whoever. Same with other dogs, if you see your dog starring or growling at another dog getting near their possession YOU correct the behavior and that's how you begin your role as the alpha. You're in charge of how they act with you, friends, family, kids, other animals. That's what that guy was representing while holding himself over the deer meat. If one doesn't know how to control this possessive behavior, then they probably shouldn't have dogs because that is so dangerous to not have control of your dog regardless if it's a Pomeranian or a German Shepherd.

I want to work where you do, you work with my favorite animal. I love everything about wolves, and would let them lick me, I would cuddle with them and essentially become apart of the pack. I agree completely with what you say on how "dogs aren't born aggressive, we make them." Like with pitbulls, I know many that are big babies and slobberfest with licks. They are very loving. People mistreat them and use them as "guard dogs" when essentially all dogs are guard dogs once you care about them and accept you as one of them.

Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance & Dogs The "Alpha Male" theory is only one of many but it has done a lot of harm and led to a lot of pain and grief for many dogs and owners. We are genetically very close to monkeys too and yet there are so many ways in which our behaviour differs completely. Keep an open mind and learn from your dog.

The Aplha mentality is wrong. Teach your dog respect by respecting him, otherwise you promote anxiety. Keep him/her happy and teach it with love and play and you're dog can't possibly show signs of aggression.
