You've really been hurt and you have a lot of medical bills now and you're going to have future medical bills, but the bad driver has very little insurance. Why do I need this if I have health insurance? If I get hurt in a car accident, won't health insurance typically cover any health treatments due to the accident?

yes., but what if the other person has limited coverage., and you're out of work for 12 months., you can only sue and receive money up to his policy limit., uim coverage would pay the rest up to your limit after his max out. You CAN Sue for loss of income., and UIM would pay for that after his policy max out.
