Bergentrückung is a common myth in some folklore, where it is said that rulers and special people as in heroic people don't just die, but instead are encaved into the mountains, from which they will eventually come out again 'to fight evil once more'.

The cool thing about Toby is that he loves Leitmotifs, and once you familiarize yourself with more of his songs, you'll start making connections based on music alone. For example, in the later parts of 'ASGORE' you hear the same leitmotif that plays whenever you get a game over, with a message telling you not to give up, and to be determined.

The crazy bus comparison might not be so off as you might think. According to Toby Fox himself, the composing process for Megalovania went something like “I sat at my keyboard and pressed keys in various orders until I found a melody I liked.” So at some point, that song probably sounded a LOT like Crazy Bus

But that's just the simple way of seeing it, or hearing it I guess." You actually perfectly encapsulated Asgore himself. He's not your typical king. Yes, he's got the weight of his people on his shoulders, and yes, he goes into the fight prepared to kill you if it comes to it, but deep down he is a big softie. Calling him a dork is 100% accurate to the game, and the song portrays it. It's regal, it's authoritative, but it's also a little whimsical.

I wouldn't say this is motif of "everything" in the game--that's Hopes and Dreams, but the motif in ASGORE is really close to Heartache because the characters are related and both are tragic characters that dealt with the grief differently and it is expressed in how/why they chose to fight (or not fight).

Your point about the music being "limited on purpose" is actually right on the money and is something Toby Fox explicitly plays with in the soundtrack. Most of the tracks in the game are played entirely with "old video game" instrumentation like this one, so that when you hit the few tracks that *don't* adhere to this limitation, they make a huge impact.

An interesting tidbit about Undertale’s development, since Toby both composed the music and programmed the game: In an interview about Undertale, Toby stated that for a lot of scenes he would write the songs FIRST, and THEN program the scenes afterwards since the music would help determine how it should go. I’m pretty sure that’s rare for game dev. Programming can be so finicky that it can change often and mess things up down the pipeline: art, music, plot, dialogue, etc. Perhaps a benefit of going the (mostly) solo dev route?

Bergentrücken is indeed german, its most often translated as "mountain rapture", it refers to the myth of the "King under the Mountain" wich is the trope that the charakter of Asgore is based on he is literally a king under a mountain... The motive of the King under the Mountain is common in all germanic cultures and deeply rooted in norse myth, the story is very very influential as it was one of Tolkiens inspirations when writing "The little Hobbit" and through Tolkiens works it influenced fantasy as a whole... Its what the famous composition "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is about. Bergentrücken is also just the 15 second intro the rest is Asgores battle theme...

I just love this track so much because of everything, the way the stage is set with Bergentrückung in the beginning and making you nervous and then going straight into ASGORE with the actual fight, all while being tragic with another character's theme weaved into this theme. Tragic also because it's a fight that seems like the very last fight of the whole game but depending on the route, neither you nor Asgore actually want to fight but you have to go through it nevertheless. Also I love it even more because of some fan lyrics that I know to this track and it just hits even more :D "Bergentrückung" also means "displacing a mountain" which fits Asgore a lot as the mighty king of monsters! And thanks to Nox for boosting this!! ♡

This is possibly my favorite track on the entire OST and I'm certain that's not hard to believe, but there's actually something really missing from the song without the drama surrounding the battle and the SFX that accompany the timed combat. *This is going to sound like minor spoilers to some, but I would actually consider it SEVERE spoilers so anyone who might play the game should come back to this later.* Up until now, you've been capable of talking down any enemy or otherwise wearing down their will to fight and then showing them [MERCY]. But for this battle, your opponent already does not want to kill you, but considers the gravity of this situation so far beyond them, beyond you, that they resolve that one of you must die. So to really drive this point home they attack your user interface directly and shatter your [MERCY] button at the start of the battle, and then refuse to look at or acknowledge you for the rest of the fight, staring down at their feet, casting a shadow over their eyes, while their mighty halberd swings with these really chunky WHOOSH sounds to the rhythm of the fight. Very organic experience.

If I was to translate the word "Bergentrückung": For one it's a compound word consisting of "Berg", which just means "mountain" and "Entrückung" which describes a momentary shift in your (self-)perception usually accompanied by visions of profound truths about reality, often associated with the experience of propheticism or divinity. Basically you are in one place physically, but your mind is in another entirely. So in short it describes a profound prophetic or enlightening experience some people describe when summiting a mountain.

@jbert423 Жыл бұрын
The "memey" take is interesting. Undertale definitely has that reputation simply due to the popularity of Megalovania. I think the chiptune usage and generally simple melodic structures can easily come off that way, especially in some of the overtly comedic tracks like Dogsong and Tem Shop. I know this is true for most games, but the Undertale songs often have major contextual impacts within the game itself. These two songs in particular also have important leitmotifs within them relating to both certain characters and to something the player hears/sees sporadically but doesn't realize has story significance. Untertale is one of those games where everything is cleverly connected in some way, and the music is no exception. It's also one of the few games I could definitely recommend a blind playthrough of for you on this channel, because it is both very short (10 hours or less*) and also very well known for its' OST. The video game cover / video game OST reaction culture that blew up surrounding Undertale/Deltarune is ultimately what led me here, the game's following is a lot like Touhou in that sense.

A number of people are probably going to be mentioning micro-tones in this video due to Davi Vasc covering this song 4 months ago and making a point about why he was struggling to match the game's chords. He made a pretty good blind analysis of the song, which I'm not even sure I can recommend given that he edited in game footage while talking in the video. It's a nice thing to listen to him talk about though. Also, I don't think Toby Fox has actually composed all that many times to my knowledge. He's famously known for composing his own games- Undertale and Deltarune, which have a large number of songs in them. Prior to that, he made music for the webcomic Homestuck and I think did a small number of songs for a romhack of Earthbound. After that, he got hired to compose for Game Freak, composing some songs for their original IP Little Town Hero, and one song in Pokemon Sword and Shield. In the newest Pokemon releases, Scarlet and Violet, he composed a larger selection of songs, and even played into creating some of the motifs in the game. The only other thing I can think of is his collaboration with the creator of Omori, which is a short video called "Skies Forever Blue" He's made some other stuff, like I completely forgot about Temmie Chang's game Escaped Chasm and the videogame based on Homestuck
@Khotetsu
@Khotetsu Жыл бұрын
Toby Fox is a master of leitmotifs (a skill he got a lot of practice with in his earlier work on the music for the comic Homestuck), and like Soken and the other composers for FFXIV, he writes songs that tell you about the characters and events they're written for. This makes for an amazing game experience, because as you play you begin to relate certain leitmotifs to their characters, to the point where even without the context of the game itself, you can tell who a song is about, what kind of person they are, and what kind of situation is going on as long as you know what leitmotif goes with each character and listen to the flow and chords of the music. A great example of this from before Undertale is a song he worked on for Homestuck called Dance of Thorns (which RichaadEB did an awesome metal cover of a few years ago where he almost shredded his fingers down to nubs trying to cover parts meant for a violin on a guitar) which is a Dueling Banjos style violin and electric guitar duet where you can viscerally feel the ebb and flow of the battle between the two instruments.

As some other comments and all have pointed out, Bergentrückung is German, and roughly translates to Mountain King. Consider now that this is a preamble made to highlight the full song after it, ASGORE, named such after the King of Undertale’s primary world which takes place in a mountain… Hall of the Mountain King is a song I know you know haha, and is also another translation of Bergentrückung wildly too, though not a proper one. However, without spoiling why, this song’s main melody is actually two other songs combined (most Undertale songs are remixes of very similar melodies). The more important one of the two being a song called Heartache. For those who like Leitmotif, Undertale is a musical playground, and for those who want a good story that ranges from some genuinely great comedy to down-right depression, Undertale also has you covered. It’s a short, sweet and hilarious RPG where nobody has to die.

So, just for some idea for the titles, since you asked for it. Bergentrükung means "The Mountain Rapture" in German. It's kind of a catch all term for the folklore of the "King in the Mountain" which is a story of a great king (usually mythical or historical figures like King Arthur) who seals themself into a deep sleep down in the heart of the mountains. Where he and his knights slumber until the world is in great peril and they arise to protect the lands and their people. The setting of the game happens when you stumble deep into the depths of a mountain and you travel under the earth to find your way home. Asgore is a king you find and have to fight down there. A literal "King Under the Mountain"

To answer a few questions you asked: 1) inspiration: Toby has said a few times before that Undertale was heavily influenced/inspired by Mother 3/Earthbound, both in terms of the story and the soundtrack. They both have the same "quirky/silly on the surface, with deeper meanings that are revealed the longer you play" kinda vibe. 2) orchestral sound (wasn't really a question but you might find interesting regardless): Undertale actually had an anniversary concert that basically told the story of the game through the soundtrack, all done with a full orchestra. You were right when you said you think it'd translate very well into one, Definitely worth a listen if you ever have the time. 3) lore: this song is for one of the last boss fights in the game, and it (like many other songs in the game) carries a few leitmotifs you would have already heard as you played through the game; you're fighting Asgore the King of Monsters, a fight that has been built up through the whole game as your main goal in order for you to escape the underground you've been trapped in. You have the option to either kill him and escape the underground, as most people you meet in the game will tell you is the only way to progress, or find a way to spare him, which is a choice you have for every monster you encounter since the very beginning. UT has many different endings based on who you decide to spare/kill, and the tone is dramatically different depending on what you choose. The leitmotifs his song has are shared with other characters you meet, including one you meet very early on in the story, and despite the similarities, you can feel how their different personalities shine through in their respective songs.

For me what makes Toby's music so special is that I grew up listening to stuff like this on the Gameboy Advance and SNES. Simple little tunes that were limited by the times in which there were made yet still managed to touch the hearts of generations. I can think back to so many RPGs where something really emotional is happening and the simple 8bit music in the background hits home so hard. Sure, most of the tracks on a soundtrack are relatively forgettable, but I think a lot of people can relate to the feeling of being struck by that one piece. Maybe it's a sick-ass battle theme that gets you fired up, perhaps it's a really sweet somber piece that moves your heart or maybe it's a deeply sad piece that strikes you with its haunting beauty. I've felt all this playing old games as a kid and Toby effortlessly recreated those feelings and emotions in the modern era with his music and then went even further beyond to produce an OST that's a stroke of genius. You're right, that when you think of an entire soundtrack based around chiptunes in our modern era it sounds a little silly. Even if it's not bad, you'd think the best it could achieve is enjoyable but ultimately forgettable background music, but Toby proves that sentiment is wrong with his Undertale OST.

"Technical" and "genius" barely scratch the surface. This song and others from Undertale's soundtrack are done with microtones. Toby Fox used 24 tones instead of the usual 12. Learned this from another reaction vid lol Dude's a mad genius that just writes music with the "what if I tried this" mentality and runs with ideas as far as he can. Pretty sure the whole leitmotif thing is just something he loves doing and retroactively turns into a narrative symbol.

There was a full orchestral concert of the game's soundtrack for its 5th anniversary, what you're saying about the underlying composition is exactly on the money. Additionally, something you may come to notice as you cover more of Toby's work is it makes heavy use of overlapping themes and motifs to set the mood of any given situation, not just for Undertale, but he was actually a large contributor to the most recent Pokemon games' soundtrack. It's impossible to know exactly what he worked on in that game because of how the music is credited, but his influence is very recognizable in a particular leitmotif associated with the new gimmick these games have. Also Bergentrückung is generally translated as "king in the mountain". So in game ramifications aside, because Undertale's music has a LOT of purpose in that regard, that's a pretty blatant reference to Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King as well. Toby Fox clearly has classical music coursing through his veins.

After watching all of Jesse's vgm reactions I can finally start commenting haha. I think I'll share my thoughts on the songs as well. I don't want to make these comments too big, peeps don't really want to read a wall of text. I am very much familiar with Undertale's soundtrack (I need to play the rest of the game lol), ASGORE is one of my favorite tracks from the game. It has a nice intensity to it nothing too over powering, just enough to know this isn't something that's just a cake walk. Love the use of chiptune instruments and I really love the moments that just explode filling out the space left in the sections before. This is actually a very interesting song tonally when it comes to the specific character and their story. Not a feel I'd think for the character but it works. There's so many small details that are just amazing when you focus on them, like how there's some strings far in the back of the mix playing some harmonies that just sound amazing. The instrumentation of this song is masterful and definitely a great song.

see you're right, there was a full orchestral concert for the 5th anniversary of undertale and the soundtrack is amazing on live instruments, I didn't even like undertale that much and I still got emotional at points, it's probably one of the best videogame music live performances out there and I know you like those so you should check it out

The one thing that makes video game music stand out to me is actually the scene in which it plays in-game. A theme can be good on its own, but there are a lot of themes that truly shine in the game itself. Sometimes it is because of how the scene progresses along with the theme, but often it is because of how the scene is set up to begin with. For example, I specifically recognize the Etrian Odyssey boss themes through my memory of boss fights in the games.

Regarding being able to hear Toby Fox compose in a less restrictive setting, he composed songs for both Pokemon Sword and Shield (2019) and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (2022). So, it's possible you might get those songs requested later down the line.

So, if I'm remembering right, Bergentruckung roughly translates to "King Under The Mountain," which is rather... literal considering he's the king of the monsters living under a mountain. But I will say there is a slight bit of the experience that is lost in this particular format. Between the intro (the Bergentruckung part) and the start of the boss fight, there's a pause for dialogue. Something along the lines of "Greetings human. It was nice to meet you. ...Farewell." The boss then literally destroys part of the UI - the option to end a battle non violently - and throws you into the battle. It's a beautiful little bit of storytelling that uses the mechanics of the game to tell you that this is not going to go like any of the fights before this.

The faux retro elements are very much intentional. Undertale is a sendup and examination of oldschool JRPGs, and its music.. if I had to put it into words, the music is deliberately created in a way that invokes the limitations of older games, while also giving them modern oomph in such a way that it feels as emotionally impactful today as those old titles and songs did back when we first experienced them. These songs absolutely stand on their own, but context is very important too -- the entire soundtrack is underpinned by leitmotifs that represent characters and concepts, and the mixture of those leitmotifs in any given piece are utilized to signify relationships between them in the story. It's something that's nearly omnipresent in this game's ost. I'd highly recommend playing it for yourself, honestly.

This should have been what played for Asgores fight not ASGORE. It gives off the desperate sorrow of Asgore and the tune change halfway through shows his wavering hesrt and feelings. It would have been way better.

As per a Toby Fox's interview with ZUN as well as some other statement, one of Toby Fox's biggest musical inspiration is Touhou. Well, clearly not just musically, he's a big Touhou nerd. In fact, it's possible that Asgore's theme specifically takes some inspiration from Septette for the Dead Princess from Touhou. While I do hear the similarities, I don't find them excessively strong, but both associated characters also wield a red spear, so I guess I believe it. That particular Touhou track takes some inspiration from Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata 3rd Movement, so maybe you're on to something with classical music, though, I don't think that part of the music transferred all the way over to Asgore's theme.

Yesssss love this track. Mix of emotional and badass with how fast it is. Listening to these two together is a must. Covers of this song is always good cause yes there is a lot going on :o. People keep giving you boss battles that's why they're so crazy lol there is more chill/silly tracks. I feel the microtones make musicians super confuse when they listen to this song because everything is off tune and just feels wrong.

I thought the epiphany was going to be either that A) you heard the microtones in this song, or B) you realized that all of UNDERTALE is leitmotifs (aka, the "ah, yes, the music here is made of music" reaction). But DANG, I was not expecting the whole "classical stylings" thing. You opened my eyes to that, too. I now appreciate the UNDERTALE OST even more than before.

I’m not sure your theory holds up tbh. I don’t think the OST is as popular as it is because it sounds orchestral, I think it’s popular because of the game it’s attached to. Of course it’s also because it’s well constructed music but there’s a lot of great video game music out there that gets sidelined. Undertale became sort of an event title and so everything about it disproportionally blew up and subsequently raved about which is not gonna be the case for the large majority of games or their soundtracks.

"Bergentrückung" is a word for a mythical or spiritual process, where you leave this world without dying and go to god or whatever higher thing directly. It is based on the middle and north european mythology. The word consists of 2 parts: 1) In "Berg",which means "mountain" in English, the "e" is spelled like the "ea" in the word "bear" in English. 2) "Entrückung" (Ent-Rückung, the "t" and "r" are spelled seperated) and the "ü" is similarely spelled like the "y" in the word "Sylph" and not like an "ei" or "ah". So it is kind of spelled "Bearg-Ent-Ryckung". I hope someone finds that useful ;)
