So glad you covered Battle Against A True Hero, my favorite song from Undertale! And since you asked, Toby Fox's songs always seem so short because, as you probably noticed, their official OST versions do not loop. This is unlike the seeming industry standard of OST versions of songs looping twice and then fading out on the top of the third loop, though naturally there are many exceptions to this. You are completely correct that Toby Fox wears his musical influences on his sleeve, and is able to blend these seamlessly in the most wonderful melting pot. One way Toby uses his myriad influences is straight up utilization of their soundfonts; like in this song where you heard the ZUNpets. Using all these soundfonts gives the Undertale OST a feel that it is a true love letter to the soundtracks Toby grew up with. The soundfonts the Undertale soundtrack utilizes includes: - The NES's sound chip (this is particularly done in an effort to emulate Chip Tanaka's Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1 OST) - The Genesis/Mega Drive's sound chip - The Earthbound/Mother series soundfonts (too many examples to list here, but most come from Earthbound and Mother 3) - Chrono Trigger's soundfont (you picked up on the piano in particular in Battle Against A True Hero) - Secret of Mana's soundfont (the percussion is particularly notable) - Mario Paint's sound effects (the game is full of jokey Dog songs all made from the Dog sound effect from Mario Paint in particular) - Touhou soundfont (ZUNpets and tubular bells) - Star Fox SNES and 64 soundfont (the "doo" voice effects in the Temmie Village theme from 64, the SNES games sounds are used for a song included in the files but not in the game) - Mega Man X, X2, and X3 soundfonts (particularly their brass, string, percussion, and guitar sounds) - Final Fantasy VI soundfont (one moment particular is an extremely elaborate reference to a sequence in FFVI, complete with its soundfont) - The Amen Break (not a soundfont per se but its inclusion is notable) - Glover 64 soundfont (its choir apparently) - The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap soundfont (specifically its panflute) - Super Mario World soundfont (used only a song on the Playstation 4 and Vita releases)

13:18 You can actually take that statement and generalize it into most of Toby's works, not just his music. He's basically frankensteining fanworks, the man is a fan and consumer of so much media that he has nigh infinite stuff to pick inspirations from (he even steals from himself since this man is practically married and in a healthy relationship with his own leit motifs) and somehow still leaves his own mark on the final product. Half time the man does or makes something it feels equally as much a showcase of his raw creativeness, as it is a love letter to the stuff he likes. That's why I find it fitting that the guy also has one of the most passionate fanbases who do the same with his work, the content creator reflects the content consumers, it's like his fanwork creativity and passion is contagious to anyone who consumes his media or smth.

To answer some questions, Toby Fox did make some songs for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (and one from Sword and Shield). Notably, the Area Zero theme & Area Zero Battle theme, Toby did the original compositions for those and Go Ichinose then arranged it. I mention those specifically, cuz those are still in queue! So you'll hear them someday, hehe. Youve also already did the reaction to the Area Zero Lab Battle theme, which Toby also did on his own. As for Undertale Yellow, that is a fangame, not a DLC. However, the script of the game was read through by Toby and given the green light. So while it isnt technically canon... it is at least compliant? Probably? Its also pretty faithful for a fangame! As for gameplay, Undertale is an RPG of sorts where the goal is to talk your way out of fighting instead of killing (although that /is/ always an option...). Main gameplay mechanic is dodging the enemies attacks while you figure out how to make them happy, so its similar to a bullet hell in a way. Perhaps the Touhou comparisons are apt! Especially since, only about a month ago, Toby Fox teamed up with Zun to make a mashup of Battle Against a True Hero and UN Owen Was Her called UN Owen was Hero?, which is a very cool idea!

An interesting thing I noticed is that around the time Toby was about to release Undertale to the world, he was playing a game called Ghost Trick. A capcom game, by the team who made Ace Attorney. He mentioned Ghost Trick a few times as a game that people should play. It's mostly just a point and click game, but it's got good characters and a short and sweet story. I bring it up because the song "Four Minutes Before Death - Variant" sounds fairly similar to Battle Against a True Hero. So that might be another inspiration people haven't pointed out much yet. The songs are distinct, but I am fairly convinced that there was some inspiration there.

Toby's wild song construction has a lot to do with his love of motifs. The way Undertale is constructed is essentially like this: you go into an area. You are introduced to The Guy (gender neutral) for that area. The Guy will proceed to follow you around finding various ways to pester you while you proceed, learning about the world and The Guy in the process. During this process, Toby will introduce several different musical motifs in wildly different contexts. And then, at the end of the area, you finally face off against The Guy, at which point all the motifs associated with them and their areas come together Voltron-style to form their boss theme, which is what Death By Glamour is. If you ever play Undertale, I'd love to see you try and identify all the pieces of DBG as they come up in game.

I'm pretty sure the piano sample in True Hero is literally just the sample from Chrono Trigger. And the Touhou sound is completely intended too! The funny thing about undertale imo is how you could technically miss some of the most popular tracks in the game completely. The game railroads you into 1 ending the first time you play, so if you leave it at that thinking "what a nice lil package" you actually miss out on a couple of the iconic songs lol. Megalovania (the song you couldn't remember the name of) and Battle against a true hero are two cases of songs a player may never naturally hear in game. Heck some players who go for multiple endings may never hear those two because of what you need to do to trigger the scenarios.

I’ll mention that most boss songs in undertale, which both of these are, are mash-ups of various area themes from the game, which is part of the reason why these songs feel like a “smorgasbord” Death by glamour contains the hotel theme, core theme, regular mettaton theme, and I believe a few others, while true hero has waterfall and spear of Justice There are a bunch of really popular videos which are just a big mashup of all of the leitmotifs in undertale andhow you can string them together Edit: also, Toby fox takes a lot of inspiration from ZUN, as every comment so far has mentioned, and has produced a mash-up single with ZUN of battle with a true hero and UN Owen Was Her? Also, Undertale Yellow isn’t DLC, it’s a fanmade non-canon prequel. Toby Fox just loves promoting fan works. The closest thing to an expansion of undertale is Deltarune, which is made by Toby fox and is vaguely a spin-off sequel, even though it’s already longer than undertale despite only having 2 out of 7 chapters complete and it being completely free currently

Whenever there is a connection between the songs in the context of the story, they almost always share a leimotif. From what I've learned, people always recommend to hear the most popular and liked tracks in the soundtrack, but separating them like that does not feel right to me. What do I think wound be best? To listen the whole album at once! By doing this, you will also notice the changes in the complexity of the melodies throughout the time.

Hey Jesse, The best way I can summarize Undertale as a game would probably be that it's a lot like Earthbound, with heavy focus on the storytelling and the exploration and development of the characters in the story. And the battle system is also very similar to that old-school RPG era, except when the enemy makes their attacks, you play a bullet hell and can (potentially) dodge all of it. Or die instantly if you aren't ready.
